Synopsis

A Beautiful Mind
The true story of prominent mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr. is the subject of this biographical drama from director Ron Howard. Russell Crowe stars as the brilliant but arrogant and conceited professor Nash. The prof seems guaranteed a rosy future in the early '50s after he marries beautiful student Alicia (Jennifer Connelly) and makes a remarkable advancement in the foundations of "game theory," which carries him to the brink of international acclaim. Soon after, John is visited by Agent William Parcher (Ed Harris), from the CIA, who wants to recruit him for code-breaking activities. But evidence suggests that Nash's perceptions of reality are cloudy at best; he is struggling to maintain his tenuous hold on sanity, and Alicia suspects a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. Battling decades of illness with the loyal Alicia by his side, Nash is ultimately able to gain some control over his mental state, and eventually goes on to triumphantly win the Nobel Prize. Based loosely on the book of the same name by Sylvia Nasar, A Beautiful Mind (2001) co-stars Paul Bettany, Adam Goldberg, Anthony Rapp, Christopher Plummer, and Judd Hirsch. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

A beautiful mind centers around the story of John Nash (Russell Crowe) and Alicia Nash (Jennifer Connelly). The character of john nash goes on to accomplish much success in both his professional and scholastic life due to his gift with the area of mathematics. The movie shows how nash’s talent even helps him obtain some prestigious work with the U.S. government. I also acknowledge that the other actors and actresses tie into some of the events surrounding nash and his wife. However, I have to admit that Jennifer Connelly’s portrayal as the wife , even though obviously female, came eerily close in the real-life personality depiction in the immense patience and kindness of my own husband(I must add that my spouse is obviously self-confident and in touch with both his sensitive and masculine sides). In summary, A Beautiful mind is both a serious and yet thought provoking drama.

A Beautiful Mind based on a true story about John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics. The film was directed by Ron Howard, from a screenplay written by Akiva Goldsman. It was inspired by a bestselling, Pulitzer Prize-nominated 1998 book of the same name by Sylvia Nasar. The film stars Russell Crowe, along with Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Bettany, Adam Goldberg, Judd Hirsch, Josh Lucas, Anthony Rapp, and Christopher Plummer in supporting roles. The story begins in Nash's days as a graduate student at Princeton University. Early in the film, Nash begins to develop paranoid schizophrenia and endures delusional episodes while painfully watching the loss and burden his condition brings on wife Alicia and friends.

I only have praise for this movie. Truly depicts what have the disease is like. The film allows novice mental health workers to experience the issue. One must remember when the film was made and the mental health tools which were available then. Also, note the “compassion” of the family, friends, and co-workers.

This movies takes you through many layers, first he's a college student that smart but doesn't know what he wants to write about, when he finds that out he is recruited by the CIA. Suddenly you learn there is no CIA that he's mentally ill and making it all up. But to his credit he fights off the demons and survives. Tragically the real John Nash and his wife were killed in an car crash together just recently.

This is 4th copy I have purchased for family members. Leading character is quite magnetic and I feel did a marvelous job presenting a difficult illness, especially for someone intelligent and refined to have to deal with. Gives insight to others as the way outsiders see their illness and shows understanding of the demons the disabled are trying to master and remain a part of the living,

Even though John Nash, the subject of this biographical film, was a genius on a level few can easily comprehend, the movie is able to relate him in the most basic way, through his humanity. Though this film addresses significantly complicated intellectual concepts, it is watchable due to its focus on love and living through the shattering of a reality in the most jarring of ways.

A Beautiful Mind is a good film, just not a great film. I'm sure that are plenty of people who will disagree with that statement and plenty more who appreciate everything Howard and Goldsman have managed to accomplish. But John Nash deserves a proper biopic, one that digs into his struggles, passions and illness rather than one that takes such liberties with his life.

This movie is an instant classic that still stands the test of time. I can't recommend this movie enough. It's a movie that demands one's attention. Not for the sake of its academic standpoint but the analysis of the protagonist and characters he interacts with through his trials and tribulations.
