  Attractive and cleans the air - but VERY loud!

  Air purifiers have become more popular in the last year or so as the pandemic ramped up, as people had to spend a lot more time confined inside their homes. Since homes are said to have several times the pollution indoors as there is outdoors, it’s a good idea to have at least one or two of these devices around your living and bedroom areas. Not all are created equal though, and “HEPA” filters also vary. The Aeris Cleantec Aair Lite is an air purifier that offers a H13 type HEPA filter. Typical true-HEPA filters can usually filter out particles in the air as small as .3 microns in size, which covers the basics like smells, pollen, pet dander, dust, smoke, etc. But viruses and many bacteria are .1 microns in size. For those, you need a HEPA filter that goes one extra step, hence, a H13 style filter, which does go down to .1 sized floaty things in your air. The Aeris Aair isn’t a huge machine, measuring around 11 x 19 x 11 inches. It’s round in shape and has a fabric cover, so it blends in with many styles. The covers come in a neutral color as well as blue and pink(ish), and it’s covered in what they call a “zinc-pyrithione” antimicrobial coating that they say helps kills surface level viruses and bacteria. Upon entering the machine, the air then passes through a standard pre-filter to get ride of larger particles like dust and odors, before passing through the H13 HEPA filter. An actual air quality gauge on top of the machine tells you how rank or clean your room air is, and the filtered air exits through the top. The machine produces NO ozone and does not use UV lamps – it does all it does through the covering, and both interior filters. Air flow is controlled via a touch slider on top, or, via an app which gives you much greater control if you prefer such as viewing current and past air quality, timers, and more. The app is not necessary for basic functions or to see the air quality reading. At full go, it can clean a 350 square foot room 4 times per hour or up to a 700 square foot room twice an hour. The filter can last up to 10 months, but of course this will vary depending on how dirty your air is and how much you keep it on higher settings. Replacement filter sets that include the pre-filter and H13 HEPA run around $99.00. So far so good in terms of air filtering it seems at least – I don’t have any scientific equipment, but I do have a basic air quality monitor in my room and since cranking up the Aeris it hasn’t given me any pollution alerts for the indoor air. But I can only “crank it up” when I’m not in the room as it’s too loud to run past 1 or 2 when I’m in there. That leads to the huge failing in my opinion, of this machine – noise. It’s VERY loud. Settings are from 1 to 5, and when watching TV or sleeping, I cannot take it beyond sleep mode or number 1. Number 2 is just over that edge of being too loud for TV/sleep, and 3 could be for cleaning a room when you’re not in it. Settings 4 and 5? I could literally hear the machine on the other side of my house when on 5. It’s not defective – no grinding noises or creeks or pings – just “air noise”, but a lot of it and LOUD. This knocks two solid stars off of it’s rating for me. What good is an air purifier if it’s too loud to use realistically at higher settings? These retail for just under $500.00 and with the occasional filter replacement, no, they are not inexpensive, but they do seem to filter more air than similar units, and the H13 filter system is a plus, and they’re attractive as well. Having clean air indoors is more important now than ever, and it does require an investment. If you have needs where noise isn’t a factor, you may want to consider it. I’m unfortunately just not sure I can recommend this investment for many others, due to the operational noise of the machine when in use. There are just too many other machines now on the market that can do the same thing at the same price (give or take), more quietly.

  Great air purifier. Came in a large box, very well protected. The setup was easy. Just plug in the cable, turn it on and download the Aeris app. Once in the app, it will ask you to press the wifi button on the purifier, which creates its own wifi network, you connect your phone to that network and then the app will connect to it, then you will type your home wifi's credential and the purifier will connect to the internet and then you can control it via the app. The app is great, it gives you the outdoors and indoors air quality index (the outdoor one is via internet, based on your location), the indoor one is via measurements made by the purifier itself. On automode it will adjust the speed accordingly on how your indoor air is. Its quite silent, however if you have very poor quality air it may ramp up to the max, where its very loud. it also has a quiet/night mode, which turns down the fan speed and the lights off, for a pleasant sleep with clean air. The app will also tell you the filters life, so you can know when to order a replacement one on time. I can tell this purifier works, it truly removes any odors, dust and bacteria/viruses via its filter that is embedded with some sort of chemical that kills them (they state many times, its safe, and safer than other purifiers that use PECO filters etc). IE I vape some times indoor and it cleans the air quickly and removes any smells my e cigarrete may give. It has a bluish cover, however you can buy several other colors to your liking from Aeris. I highly recommend this filter, finally clean air indoors!

  Key Features Nearly Silent Operation Virus Killing Coating (Including Covid) App Connected for Monitoring (Wi-Fi) Auto Controls FIRST IMPRESSIONS A feature that appears to be unique to Aeris’ products is not only are their units are designed by MIT engineers, but that they are completely sealed units. Being completely sealed means that there are no leaks around or between the filters and 100% of the air that gets pulled through the unit is filtered with no air sneaking past the filters. That is a bold claim and is quite an accomplishment. I know on my other units, regardless of the manufacturer, always have a build-up of dust around the edges of the filters. So, I conclude that this is a low-restriction area, allowing air and dust to pass through without filtering. Aeris claims to have remedied that situation and states their filters capture 99.95% of all contaminants down to 0.1 microns. This includes smoke, dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria and viruses. Furthermore, Aeris coats their filters with Zinc Pyrithione. Though I am not sure what it is, Aeris says that this anti-microbial coating is responsible for killing bacteria and viruses without the need for UV lights or ozone generators. This includes the ability to kill the Coronavirus. AWESOME!!! INITIAL SET-UP Initial set-up involved nothing more than removing a few pieces of shipping tape and plugging the unit in. The Aeris was off and running. The user interface is very sleek and minimalist. There are no exposed buttons or visible screens. The “buttons” are capacitive touch spots on the top of unit and the display lights up through to the top. The machine is very modern and attractive looking. My unit was the sailor blue, which is a bold navy blue. However, if that is not to your liking, Aeris sells Aair Lites in other colors, or you can simply buy replacement sleeves and change them out. A thoughtful change of aesthetics from your average, plastic box appliances. USE The Aair Lite is rated to rooms up to 700 square feet and can change the air twice an hour. The recommended room size is 350 square feet and in a room this size, the Aair Lite can change the air 4 times per hour. After setting up Aair Lite, I placed the unit in Auto mode. Auto mode will automatically adjust fan speed according to ambient air quality. The better the air quality, the slower the speed and vice versa. I am happy to report that on the lowest setting the unit is nearly inaudible. NEGATIVES As much as I like the minimalist aesthetics of the display, it is also a negative. The functions of the unit are displayed as symbols. The display is similar to the old-school dot matrix displays, but it does not scroll text. It only displays a character and a symbol. For example, if the pre-filter is getting dirty, the display shows a “P” with a slash. Or if the HEPA filter needs changing, it displays an “H” with an “X”. I know this is being picky, but a scrolling display would be more intelligible. The Aeris app is a complete mess. I tried using the app with my iPad and my Galaxy smartphone and both had difficulty setting up the unit for the first time. I had to try a combination of each device a total of 7 times to get the unit set up for the first time. Come to find out, the reason for the difficulty was the app fails to take you to the account login / creation page prior setting up the device. Without first creating an account, you cannot perform any set-up on the device, as the app will not recognize your Aeris or your home wi-fi. After trial and error, the app finally got me to the account creation page, and I was able to finish setting up the device. In addition to the issues with initial set-up, the app will randomly log you out and does not prompt you to log back in. So, without warning, you lose all communication with the Aair Lite and the app won't connect. It got me a couple of times and left me scratching my head trying to figure out what was wrong with the unit, only to find out that the app logged out without prompting to log back in. CONCLUSIONS The Aair Lite is a nice change of pace compared to the old, boring designs of most all other air purification systems. The modern design and aesthetics look great and fortunately the Aair Lite is designed to perform as well as it looks. After just one day in a large bedroom, the air quality and overall smell had been improved markedly. My entire family commented on how much cleaner and better the room smelled. Not an easy achievement to impress everyone. If Aeris can, and I have no doubt that they won’t, get the app refined, this would be a 5-star product. But the difficulties getting the app to work consistently drags the overall experience down to a 4-star review.
