    Synopsis

    After Earth
Father-and-son space travelers crash-land on a desolate planet Earth 1000 years in the future, and fight to find a way back home in this sci-fi action thriller from director M. Night Shyamalan. It's been nearly a millennium since mankind was forced to flee their home planet for the safety of Nova Prime, and in that time Earth has grown increasingly hostile to human life. Gen. Cypher Raige (Will Smith) has just finished an extended tour of duty when he reunites with his 13-year-old son Kitai (Jaden Smith), and begins making the transition from military leader to father. When an asteroid storm damages their ship, however, a badly injured Cypher and his son are forced to crash-land on Earth. Now, the only way for young Kitai to save his father's life is to find the rescue beacon that was lost when their ship came plummeting through the atmosphere. In order to survive and succeed, Kitai will have to become the type of soldier who would make his father proud. Zoë Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This movie got slaughtered by critics upon release, but the reality is the movie's not that bad. When it was released I think that public perseption of both Will Smith and M. Night was negative, and this reflected on the film's perception as a whole. The truth is this is a cool and orignal sci-fi film, a rarity among all the remakes and sequels of the day. It's really a film about a father and son coping with the loss of a daughter and sibling. The father and son are then thrown into a dangerous situation and must find a way to survive and seek aid. Along the way they bridge the gulf that was created by their mutual loss of a family member. The movie also offers a creative look at an Earth that has been free of humans for thousands of years. New speicies of animals and plants have evolved and the planet is now a death-trap for humans. The special effects are solid. The Blu-ray is top notch for sound and video. I haven't really explored the special features.

I was really excited for this movie when the preview hit theaters. I don't know if it's because I had high expectations or if it was the guy behind us kicking our seats but the movie wasn't all I had hoped it to be. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good movie, it just...could've been better. Still, for the right price I thought it was worth owning for repeat viewings. This package includes a DVD, so I can share it with my mom. Also, it's mastered in 4k, so I can't wait to see how good it looks once I have a compatible TV. The digital ultraviolet is always nice to have, too.

Watched a few times and keep going back again... At first I thought it was a waste of money but it grew on me... There are some parts that will's performance was overdone and his son's was ok. Plot is good and fx too!!! I love will smith so I may be kinda biased... I'm still on the fence with his mini me. I'm glad this was a gift and movie ended up being better the more I watched and understood. The final fight scene was unexpected but may be why I changed my appreciation of the movie.

There are always movies that I've bought on Bluray/DVD that I tend to put into a category after I've watched them called "Theater Worthy". It just means that the movie was probably one that I was going to see in theaters when it first came out but unfortunately I wasn't able to. I put them in this category just to say that I wish I had seen it in theaters now! & that is exactly where this movie falls in my opinion.

There is something very nice about a Father and Son making films together that it is hard to dislike After Earth. I am caught up into the M. Night hoopla (I love his movies) and expected a twist ending but this one is just a straight forward mainstream adventure flick. One of the final scenes between father and son was near brilliant and almost brought tears to my eyes. The special effects were very well done.

Will Smith is a good actor, but this movie is not one of his best. He strains to be the uncaring, hardcore, militant father when just comes across as cliched. His son, Jaden, has a slightly better performance, but this is a definitely a drop from when he made his standalone acting debut in The Karate Kid (when are they going to make a sequel to that anyway?).

Great resource to exemplify the impact of work on a relationship between a father and son and the importance of maintaining the relationship which requires a constant growth and the difficulty in trying to catch up. In this case love was the catalyst and key to the survival and rebuilding of this relationship where each had to examine their inner selves first.

I did not see this movie in the theaters as I was not in a position to at the time. Getting it on Blu-ray was kind of chancy, as I often am let down by the smaller screen and the less intense sound. I have to say that this movie did not let me down. It was a far more involved movie than I expected. It was great for the home theater experience.
