  • SKU: 3655690
  • Release Date: 05/11/1999
  • Rating: NR
This IMAX production reveals the majestic beauty of Alaska. The DVD of the film offers a standard full-frame transfer that hinders the vastness of the original image, but does a commendable job of capturing the clarity of the original image. Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks are rendered in English, French, Japanese, Spanish, German, Chinese, and Swedish. English subtitles are accessible. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but this disc will still be of interest to anyone who enjoys nature documentaries or IMAX films.

Alaska: Spirit of the Wild
Before Slingshot Entertainment converted this film to DVD and VHS video, the only place you could see this Academy Award nominated documentary was on an IMAX screen. Though IMAX features are filmed with the intent of being shown on a specially designed screen that gives the viewer the feeling of being in the middle of the action, little has been lost in the conversion of this film. Considering the exceptional clarity of the DVD picture, if one were to have a large screen television and surround sound capability, you would still feel like you were in the middle of Alaska, frolicking with the polar bears. Alaska: Spirit of the Wild is a full immersion experience. The cameras close in on a pack of wolves as they hunt, a herd of caribou as they graze, and thunder through the tundra giving the viewer a never before seen perspective of one of the earth's most fascinating places. With narration by Charlton Heston it is no wonder this film was nominated for Best Documentary in 1998, but the real reason may be director George Casey's dazzling capture of the aurora borealis. The DVD version of this film is Internet ready for further exploration and also equipped with a menu setting that allows the viewer to skip to his/her favorite chapter (which includes the natural history of the Alaskan landscape). ~ Ed Atkinson, Rovi

    Good Overview

If you have ever seen IMAX presentations, you will recognize the style on your TV, but you won't experience the stomach-churning impact of an actual IMAX. We are planning a trip to Alaska and are soaking up all we can and obtained this. This is a general highlights approach (with emphasis on IMAX) that will certainly increase your interest. Don't look for great detail here, or a significant focus on tourable areas or activities, but that's good too--I won't be fishing, hiking, camping, etc., and am not interested in that activity. If you want to focus on a specific area or activity, look on elsewhere. Use it as a general overview, well photographed and narrated.
