    Features

Echo Spot features 2nd generation far-field technology

With four microphones, beamforming technology, and enhanced noise cancellation, it can hear you from across the room - even while music is playing.

If you have more than one Echo, Alexa responds intelligently from the Echo you're closest to with ESP (Echo Spatial Perception).

Echo Spot is small and compact, and fits easily into any room of your home

The compact size and viewing angle of the screen make Echo Spot ideal for use on a nightstand or desk as a smart alarm clock.

That can also turn your lights on and off, show your commute time, get the weather, or show your calendar. Or use Spot in the kitchen to easily set and see timers, call friends and family, see shopping and to do lists and more.

Echo Spot can connect directly to speakers using a 3.5mm stereo cable or Bluetooth

Add voice control to your home stereo system in the living room or den.

With multiroom music, play your favorites throughout your home across multiple Echo devices (Bluetooth not supported for multiroom music).

News and information you can see and hear

Just ask Alexa for your video flash briefing from CNN, Bloomberg and more. Curious about the latest movie trailers or need a how-to video? Just ask.

Echo Spot helps keep you organized at home

Start a timer in the kitchen and watch as it counts down, or easily see and manage your family's calendar.

Sign in to the Alexa app to take your to-do and shopping lists with you. Just add an item to the list from home, and whoever is out shopping will see it added instantly on their Alexa app.

Echo Spot provides hands-free voice control for your music

Watch as the display comes alive to show song lyrics, custom stations, curated playlists, and album art with Amazon Music.

Listen to tens of millions of songs with Amazon Music Unlimited. Echo Spot also connects to Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn - giving you voice control for all your music.

Echo Spot is Bluetooth-enabled so you can stream other popular music services, such as Apple Music from your phone or tablet.

Use Echo Spot to see a live camera feed from the nursery or your front door

Turn on the fan or dim the lights from the couch - all without lifting a finger.

Control multiple devices at scheduled times or with a single voice command, like locking the doors and turning off the lights when you go to bed.

Echo Spot works with smart home devices

Compatible with cameras, lights, TVs, fans, thermostats, garages, sprinklers and more.

Compatible with smart home connected devices, including starter kits for easy setup from brands such as Ring, WeMo, Philips Hue, SmartThings, ecobee, Wink, and others.

Make hands-free voice calls to any of your contacts, or video calls to friends and family who have an Echo Spot, Echo Show, or the Alexa app

When you're busy making dinner, just ask Alexa to place a call from your Echo Spot to anyone.

You can also enable the Drop In feature for when you want to connect instantly with other Echo devices in your home or closest family and friends.

For example, you can drop in to ask what time dinner will be ready, see the baby's nursery, or check in with a close relative.

With the Alexa app, conversations and contacts go where you go

When you're away from home, use the app to make a quick call or send a message to your family's Echo.

Alexa calling and messaging is free - to get started, download the latest version of the Alexa app on a smart phone with iOS 9.0 or higher, or Android 5.0 or higher, and verify your mobile number.

Echo Spot can use tens of thousands of skills and counting

Skills add even more capabilities like ordering a pizza from Domino's, requesting a ride from Uber, tracking your fitness with Fitbit, controlling your TV with Dish and more.

To enable new skills, just ask Alexa. New skills are being added all the time. You can also see ratings and reviews to learn what other customers are saying about the thousands of skills available in the Alexa app.

    Alexa is always getting smarter

The more you use Echo Spot, the more Alexa adapts to your speech patterns, vocabulary, and personal preferences. And because Echo is always connected, updates are delivered automatically. Also works with Arlo.

I bought this for my husband to use mainly as an alarm clock as well as a medium for controlling smart home features. Prior to writing the review, I asked him questions about the ease of use, his user experience and how he likes the device (screen, sound, etc.) He expressed all positive comments, and noted that he is quite happy with this device. My husband is not tech savvy, and does not like using devices that he deems “too much trouble.” However, he is comfortable with the Alexa app and interacting with all of our Echo devices. This one is no different. Here are his main use cases: 1. As a M-F alarm clock. The Spot works very well for this purpose. Previously, he had been using an original Echo as an alarm, along with a separate digital clock. The Spot replaces both, and frees up the first gen Echo for another use in our home. While there aren’t a lot of clock faces, he chose one he likes, and set the Spot to use night mode. The screen is still visible at night, but not so bright as to distract from sleeping. The Spot is programmed to wake him every weekday. This is a simple one time set up. No need to “set” the alarm each night. It hasn’t missed a beat. The only time he needs to do anything is when he has a day off. In that case, he simply sets his M-F alarm to “off” in the Alexa app the night before the day off, then back on again the next day. He doesn’t have to mess with it again until the next time he has a day off. 2. Controlling smart home routines. We have various routines set up, including several that control lighting groups in various rooms. The Echo Spot, like other Alexa devices, works great to control these. 3. Checking weather and/or traffic before leaving for the day. 4. Listening to music on Pandora or Amazon Music. The Spot has a surprisingly decent speaker. We have an original Echo, two Dots and a Show as well as the Spot. I expected the sound to be on par with the Dots, but it’s quite better than that. Not bad at all. It’s more than adequate for enjoying some music while getting ready for work or unwinding before falling asleep. 5. Occasional drop-in. This feature works easily, and is very convenient. The screen on the Spot is good. Not great, but certainly good. We understood going in that it’s a small screen and that it has lower resolution than we find on devices such as our phones, tablets and TVs. But, the images are clear. And, we aren’t using this device to, for example, watch movie, after all. The screen is more than good enough for this device’s uses. All in all, the Spot has definitely filled its intended role (alarm clock) and then some. My husband was not sure he would like it (new thing to learn,) but his responses today when I asked how it’s working for him made it clear that the Spot was a good choice. Plus, Amazon continues to include more skills for Alexa, and these existing devices continue to improve and offer more features.

I actually really like the concept of the product. It is fun just to play around with, but difficult to operate, which I'll go into detail about later. The spot is convenient for my 8 year old because it will show her pictures or text of the things she asks Alexa. She uses it to help her spell because it displays the word. The built-in hub on the echo plus isn't necessary, unless you plan on buying one smart light bulb are a time because the packs come with a hub free (an echo dot is sufficient and cheaper). The speaker quality is great for music and can be increased fairly loud without distortion. Now for the difficulty with operating. For starters, your echo doesn't have many bells and whistles prepackaged. You have to search skills, which are kind of like apps or lessons to teach Alexa. There are many different skills you can teach Alexa, so make sure you have time to look through them. Now you've taught Alexa skills, but for every skill you must remember how to communicate exactly as instructed on the skill page or Alexa will not understand (e.g. "Alexa, tell to perform such and such task). If you don't remember the phrases to get Alexa to perform the skill you can always look through your app and under skills to find directions. Who will remember all the specific wording for each skill? Plus, the whole point in speaking to Alexa is that it's hands-free, so looking at the app for directions isn't convenient. It gets very frustrating if you don't have the Alexa app handy. Next, if you plan on controlling plugs or lights with Alexa you have to download apps from the manufacturer. Your now cluttered phone is even more cluttered and you don't speak the same language as Alexa. She also has difficulty understanding a lot of questions and you have to rephrase them several times for her to give you any answer. I love, love, love the functions I can remember the wording for Alexa to perform the task. There are so many things Alexa can do that listing them would make this review entirely too long. I will list my favorites and most useful to me. Turns on lights or plugs. Groups lights, traffic report, weather, and many other functions together to be performed with one command (e.g. "Alexa, good morning"). Orders pizza. Tells jokes. Gives answers to questions you have. Controls TV. Sends messages and makes calls. Adds things to grocery lists. Sets reminders so you won't forget things. Adds appointments to your phone or email linked calendar. Helps kids with homework. Plays games for adults and kids.

I would review and rate this product more towards it being a voice assistant over its being a speaker. I purchased the white unit, and as a device, I say it's sleek and easily blends with furniture and house décor. It can even be discreet. It doesn't shout for attention, but when you do notice it, it has an appeal due to its size, form factor, and the screen. It is responsive and easily picks up voice activation commands. As for its Alexa feature, well, it doesn't perform any differently than the rest of the Alexa-enabled devices, and Alexa is Alexa. Love it or hate it. It's cool as a clock as well, and works nicely for displaying reminders and other information on the screen. You can use it for playing news clips, and other videos that are supported. There is also a separate accessory that you can buy that will serve as its base/stand. Adding that adds to the cool form factor and enables you to tilt the device. However, I noticed that if you tilt it backward, it reduces the sensitivity of the microphones to pick up your voice, I think because the mics now tend to point backwards. As a speaker, it's not too bad. The sound is not tinny, and has a bit of body and fullness to it. Just don't compare it with full-sized speakers. For casual listening, it has its uses. Overall, it is a good gadget you would like to bring in to your home.

I’ve had this for about a month now and I am quite satisfied with it. It’s easy to set up and has a lot of nice personalization features. I like that it has the ability to swipe to get weather and other information without saying anything. This is especially good at night if you are sleeping in the bed with someone next to you so that you don’t have to awaken them by yelling to get information. The display is small but the picture quality is decent and is a nice addition. I Purchased the stand for mine which in my opinion is a must have, otherwise the thing just sets there in a goofy awkward looking position and you don’t have any way to change the viewing angle. This cost about 20 bucks extra and should have come with the device. I have deducted two stars for the following reasons. The cost is way too high especially after you have to purchase the stand separately and the sound quality could have been better since it’s only slightly if any better than the echo dot. You could buy three echo dots for the price of this thing and have the convenience of echo in different locations

We purchased an Echo Dot for my mom on Christmas and she loves it. After seeing advertisements for the newer Echo Spot, we thought it would be a great addition as well as a wonderful Mother's Day gift. She absolutely loves it. Of course I was tasked to set it up, but it was very simple to set up (easier than the spot. The touch screen display helps). Whether it's telling Alexa good morning or asking Alexa to set an alarm, or controlling smart home devices, the Echo Spot is a great tool for entertainment and convenience. It's perfect for those who enjoy a smaller device and the convenience of a display (video calling other Amazon Alexa and Echo users is amazing as well). No matter the age, no matter how technologically savvy one may be, no matter the interests, it's great for anyone, and that's something that can rarely be said about anything these days.

We were using a dot for an alarm and wanted to visually be able to see the time instead of always asking Alexa. We mainly use it for alarm, clock and weather. I learned the other day you can add traffic but haven't tried it yet. I haven't ever tried to watch video or skype on the spot. The screen is small. I do like having a user interface on the spot for settings though. The far field voice recognition doesn't work as well as expected. We've had the same problem with all of our Echo devices. It hears my husband's deeper voice a little better than mine but it frequently takes multiple attempts to get a response and/or misunderstands the request. I'm also not very impressed with Alexa's repertoire although it is growing. I like the look of the spot. It is heavier and more solid feeling than expected which is good. It works well enough for our purposes.

Exactly What I Needed and More!

I have been incredibly sick this year and have had a hard time getting around. My husband purchased me the Echo Spot so that just in case there is an emergency and I can't move that I can just call out to Alexa and I can get the help I need. Luckily I haven't had any emergencies but I'm still glad he purchased it for me because the Echo Spot comes in handy! I've used it to add things to my grocery list, check the weather and news, and set timers and alarms. I have a picture of my boys as my background which I also love and since it's black it blends in nicely on my end table. The only thing I wish was that it was wireless since I hate how wires look so cluttered. Other than that I love it!
