Perfect basic e-reader
||Posted .I read incessantly online but rarely paper books. I wondered if buying a Kindle would prod me to read more away from the glowing computer screen, and to read some actual book material for a change. So far, the answer is yes. This entry-level Kindle is inexpensive, a handy size, easy to read, and holds more books than I'll ever need. It works exactly as intended. The monochrome display is perfect for text and simple figures. I find the controls slightly awkward for following footnotes and looking up word definitions, but basic page-turning etc is faultless. A battery charge lasts a long time with wi-fi off (which should be the default setting but isn't... why leave wi-fi on when it's rarely needed?) Note that there's also a great deal of free (legal) content out there if you have any interest in old books — Darwin, Dickens, Twain, etc — and my public library *loans* contemporary e-books as well. In other words, feel free to buy the latest content from the Kindle Store if you wish, but it's hardly necessary to keep you swimming in quality reading material more or less forever. I can't believe I went so long without one of these little gems.

Kindles are great
||Posted .I had a Kindle Fire which got damaged - since I had been given an iPad as a gift I no longer needed many of the features that the Fire had which a plain Kindle did not... so I got this Kindle to replace the Fire so I could still have access to books I had obtained/purchased on my Fire account... the gray screen is not as easy to read but I also purchased a Kindle cover with a built in light... if this is your first Kindle, I would recommend the Paperwhite over the plain Kindle - the few extra dollars for the Paperwhite are, in my view, worth the extra money - my wife has had her Kindle for 6-7 years and it is still going strong so if the Paperwhite is $50 more your are talking $7-8/year... whichever reader you pick, they are wonderful - particularly for travel so you do not have to pack books in your luggage!!

Great Reader
||Posted .Overall for the price and features included you can't go wrong with this reader. The screen does not have a backlight so you cannot read it in the dark, but it excels in the outdoors. You can perfectly see the screen in the sun whether in a park, or on the beach. If you want to be able to read in the dark (in bed) you may want to consider the Kindle Paperwhite. As far as content, Amazon offers what seems like an endless amount of books. If you own more than one Kindle device it will also sync each device to the furthest page read on any one device. Definitely worth the price.

Good - not sure I like the ads on the lock screen
||Posted .The screen is "paper clear", and its as light as a plastic toy. I've had it for over a week and not needed to charge it yet (I haven't used it every day). My last kindle had a physical keyboard though, which can be helpful at times vs using that 90s style toggle at the bottom - noting that this one is 1/4the price of the one I bought in 2009. Also - other kindles allow for displaying % read and or page numbers. On this I only see % read... not sure if there is a way to change to "page number". Overall, can't complain given the pricing.

Kindle is best for reading
||Posted .For a while, I have been reading e-books on iPad's Kindle App, and I always enjoyed reading books. I realized that I cannot use iPad outside, because of reflective screen, and also it is gets bit heavy to carry iPad longer periods of time. So, I got Kindle, and wow! I love it! Easier to carry for longer period of time and can read everywhere. The only two things that I regret, no backlight or touch screen.

Great EReader for traveling
||Posted .I did not need a Kindle with all the bells and whistles (apps, color etc). I strictly wanted an E reader when traveling or on vacation or in bed. I have other devices for email and internet. This was a no frills, very affordable option and it exceeded expectations for the price I paid. Best Buy met the price Amazon had online so I paid under $50 for it. It is small, very light, has great battery life and is very easy for anyone to use. I have archived many books that I've already read and have 5 pages of new titles yet to read. Very happy with this purchase!

Excellent Reader
||Posted .I have read books for years. I have procrastinated about buying a reader because it is hard to convert a 56 year old man. Needless to say, we all have to grow up sometime and keep up with technology. I finally broke down and purchased the Kindle and wish I had done it sooner. I still have doubts about the price of Kindle books I will read but as far as the reader is concerned I am a convert. No more taking books on vacations. No more having to carry a heavy bag with reading material. I am looking forward to vacations with a light bag on my shoulder.

Good, solid reader
||Posted .I bought this as a back up, since my kids keep taking over my electronics. I know, you may say I shouldn't give up my electronics to my kids, but if you are looking at a Kindle, you understand the value of uninterrupted reading time. Anyway, back to the point, I bought this as a back up to my tablet, and have found myself reaching for this even when I could read from the tablet. It's basic, it's lightweight, and fits in one hand. Sometimes I get a little confused when the touch screen doesn't work... oh wait, it isn't touch screen, that's why I'm confused... but who needs that when all you want is to do is to read a good book? Plus, I don't have to freak out about the potential of losing it, since it is so inexpensive (in the grand scheme of electronics).
