Annie [Special Anniversary Edition] [DVD] [1981]

  • SKU: 6174613
  • Release Date: 01/13/2004
  • Rating: PG
John Huston's big-screen adaptation of the Broadway smash Annie arrives on DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. Though fine for what it is, the full-frame transfer cramps the film in a way that will bother film lovers. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while French and Spanish soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Thai, and Korean subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a ten-minute featurette with the now grown Aileen Quinn, who discusses the wonderful time she had making the movie and how difficult the process of getting the part was. Another extra allows youngsters to sing along with the songs in the film. A music video from the Swedish pop band Play performing "It's the Hard-Knock Life," and a selection of trailers rounds out this release.

    Synopsis

    Annie
This family classic is adapted from the Broadway musical, which was based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie. During the Great Depression in New York City, a plucky red-haired scrapper named Annie (Aileen Quinn) is the voice of hope for her fellow orphans who live under the supervision of drunken floozy Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett). Annie's spirit is fueled by the belief that her real parents dropped her off at the orphanage with a half of a locket, promising to return for her with the other half. One day, the dingy orphanage is visited by the sophisticated Grace Farrell (Ann Reinking), personal secretary to conservative politician Oliver Warbucks (Albert Finney). In order to improve his image, Grace brings Annie to the Warbucks estate for a weeklong visit. Annie quickly wins the hearts of servants and politicians alike, eventually even bringing her song of hope, "Tomorrow," to President Roosevelt in Washington. Warbucks and Grace even go so far as to perform a public search for Annie's parents, creating an opportunity for Miss Hannigan, Rooster (Tim Curry), and Lily (Bernadette Peters) to scam their way to the reward money. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Annie is the epitome of feel-good cinema. Its entire construction deals with positive thinking, love, family, friendship, and promoting the good in life while working through the bad and refusing to let negative circumstances stand in the way of a healthy outlook on life. It's a movie high in spirit and fit for the entire family. It's catchy and pleasant, filled with quality song and dance numbers. The performances are stellar even if the movie is shaped by rather simple and straightforward ideas. It's that adherence to simpleness and goodness that make the movie great and so incredibly sweet, one of the top musicals, and perhaps the finest "rainy day" picture of them all. Sony's Blu-ray release of Annie is disappointingly short on extras, but it does offer solid video and audio. Considering the quality of the film and Sony's low MSRP, this release comes highly recommended.

My children watched this movie when they were young. My daughter watched it so often, I can practically recite it line by line and sing every song. The only copy I had of it was on VHS so I decided to get it on DVD. The movie is the same wonderful movie my kids and I loved. The colors and pixelation have to be redone but I loved it nonetheless.

I saw ANNIE on Broadway years ago. Although the DVD of the movie ANNIE has the memorable songs of the Broadway show the movie is not as good as the Broadway version. Perhaps the new movie version scheduled for December 2014 release will offer a more entertaining slant on the ANNIE saga.

This movie still stands up after all the years as one of the great movie musicals of all time. The overall spirit of the film shines through the song and dance numbers and fills it with the sunny atmosphere that brightens anyone who sees it.

This is a great movie. I was able to share it with my teenage daughter who keeps singing the songs over & over. Since she likes the songs so much, there is a special feature that has the songs with words so you can sing-along. Yay!

I Liked It As a Kid

I loved watching 'Annie' as a kid and enjoyed the musical sequences. As an adult, I don't quite care for the picture as much, but it's still not bad, and a good film for the family to watch. Plenty of bonus features, but sadly full-screen only.
