As far as streaming devices go, apple tv 4k is by far the most expensive. It does however have the most beautiful GUI and user experience in terms of details, colors and fluidity. It is also the best device to stream from iPhones, iPads and Mac laptops onto your TV. Everything is run in 4K resolution from the icons & menus to images & screensavers to video content (when available). Roku 4K devices (as great as they are) don't do that. Rokus (as far as i know) only run the 4K video itself in 4K, everything else in HD. It also has some of the highest specs on a streaming device ever, such as gigabit ethernet which takes advantage of the higher internet speeds available these days for faster streaming, bluetooth keyboard compatibility so you can connect a bluetooth keyboard for easier search, and bluetooth audio so you can connect your bluetooth headphones directly to the apple tv if you like. It also has voice search through Siri which works very well, and offers a pretty decent selection of games on the App Store. The downsides are (other than the price) that it's still missing compatibility for certain apps such as Comcast's "Xfinity Stream" cable tv streaming app or "Google Play Movies & TV". Also, due to technical reasons, the YouTube app on apple tv does not run 4K videos in 4K, it only plays them in HD (something about the way 4k content on youtube is formatted which is not compatible with the way apple tv works, weird!!). One issue i'm having with it is that i'm not getting good colors when i set it to HDR (high dynamic range). I can run it at 4K SDR (standard dynamic range) beautifully, but when i bump it up to 4K HDR the colors look washed out. I spoke with apple tech support about this (which, by the way, are some of the best tech support teams i've ever dealt with). It does seem like it's an issue that some customers are experiencing and they're working on figuring out the cause of the problem and a resolution to it. The good piece of news is that all of the downsides i mentioned, whether the compatibility with some apps or the HDR color rendering issue, can be potentially resolved with software updates down the road (for example, apple only just added support to "Amazon Prime Video" 2 weeks ago (Dec 6, 2017), before that you couldn't access your amazon prime video content on apple tv!) Another thing to keep in mind is that you will need a high-speed high-quality HDMI cable if you want to connect the apple tv 4k to your 4k TV at full strength, which will run you between $15-$30. Best bet is to get the Belkin high speed HDMI cable apple advertises on their website under apple tv accessories. It's one of the fastest cables on the market and it's the cable i've been told that they use in all their testing of this device. As an overall device it offers an excellent experience.

I loved Apple products. For the ease of use, the interface, the precision of their products, well this new appletv4k is advertised as the most powerful of them all. That power doesn’t mean much when the functionality is compromised. This product does what it wants, first the remote is absolutely unusable, horrible even, it’s all black, doesn’t light up so if you dare push the home button accidentally you are screwed, to fast forward 10 seconds but usually only 5 you have to be a tightrope walker with your fingers by touching the side edge of the remote without hitting the touch sensor mouselike sensor or your place will advance 10 minutes or further, no thought went into this remote design. None. Steve Jobs would be spinning in his grave about just the remote. It has one unique function, if you miss dialogue in a scene you can push the mic button and say “ what did they say?” And it will rewind ten seconds and replay scene with subtitles so you can read what was said. The AppleTV 4k is beautiful looking and the screen savers are the best feature to look at, the resolution is amazing. But you can be watching a show on any streaming app and it will just decide its time to shut off and return to the home screen, there has to be a design flaw that needs to be corrected at once. I have an appletv3 and it is far more convenient, remote is better, the interface is better, I want to move my old apple3 to my 4k tv because of how bad the appletv4k is I don’t care enough for 4k, 1080 beautiful 1080 is fine. I bought the 64 GB memory because you can never have enough storage. But for $199 I am kicking myself for buying this product. I could have an amazon fire TV, and a Roku 4k ultra for less than this one box of crap. And no it is not my internet speed issue, my speed is 80 down which is plenty fast and it is wireless but these glitches shouldn’t happen. This maybe apples worst release of one of their products in along time, and they know it. Often after given a command it spins anspins thinking what the command meant, what is the powerful quad processor doing when the Apple has a brain hemorrhage, it is a frustrating device that I would not recommend to my enemy, do not waste your money on this box, get a Roku 4k I will be as soon as I have the money and probably give the AppleTV 4k to the first taker, it’s that bad. I am at a loss of words to describe how much I dislike this device and it’s functionality. Mine is not a faulty box, it is just that they are all faulty and this item will leave you guessing how they decided $200 is a fair price, it is dumbfounding, skip this item and buy two other 4k items that stream. I am sorry Apple but I was really looking forward to you leading the way in dominance in the new 4k world but your device is possessed and does what it wants. Go back to the drawing board, stop by at Steve Jobs grave, and apologize for making this product, he needs to hear it from you, not us, it sucks. Apple fans won’t like reading this review but this device is garbage and don’t argue me that it is good, it is NOT GOOD. Save your money and buy something else like a TCL flatscreen tv with 4k. I will move my Apple tv3 from my wife’s room and give her the 4k even though she has a 1080 tv. I miss my appletv3 so much, I gave the 4 some time but I hate it more each day. What happened Apple?.what were you thinking, terrible.

Apple TV 4K - 64GB - Mid-2018 version Look. I’ve bought and still own everyone else’s top-of-the-line streamer. I’ve had serial love affairs with all of them. I admit to my lack of loyalty. In my defense, I was trying to avoid spending this much money. But, Apple was being really foolish about some of their corporate decisions in the past. That appears to be over, now. Setup: The Apple TV makes the setup process as easy as possible. If you’re already in the Apple family it will use phone and account info you already have. I like the easy-to-view and use HOME screen which puts you in control of what’s there, and give’s fuss free access to SETTINGS, and your favorite channels. They are ALL here. Netflix, Amazon Prime, MLB, and too many others to list. Non-Apple users will find nothing to complain about, because nothing is assumed and their are no obstacles to use. The REMOTE is probably too small — it’s going to get lost. But, my Harmony Remote captured all the important actions from Harmony’s database, so I’m not too worried. The APPLE REMOTE is a dream. Just Wow. It allows Sir control of everything — and it works. The MENU button reliably backs you out, step-by-step, from anywhere you are. There is a wonderful TOUCH PAD that has different functions depending on whether you’re in NETFLIX, or, or any other APP. Generally, it gives you the ability to easily scan backwards and forwards, skip in increments, slide up into OPTIONS menus, or select between screen choices. Like every other track pad, there’s a learning curve. But, you'll reach for this over your universal remote . . . and it's batteries are long lasting can be recharged!! The APPLE TV can be given access to your cloud library for fuss-free display of photos and videos on your TV. If you’ve tried and failed to get full music or video screen sharing interactivity between your Mac computer and your TV, you’re neighbors might hear the screams of joy coming from your house. It’s no more difficult than going to your top menu bar on your computer and looking for the APPLE TV. Select. Look at your TV. Voila. Full integration. PERFORMANCE: The SLEEP screen reveals the Apple’s IMAGE quality immediately. I use the APPLE TV instead of my built-in LG OLED Apps. Why? There’s many more Apps, but most importantly, the images are outstanding. The Remote makes using various Apps mush easier and even fun. The Apps themselves are apparently customized for the Apple TV device and often have more features and allow the REMOTE to provide more control over the program. I’m going to guess the Apple’s powerful chips provide faster or better buffering, because activities occur more quickly and highest resolutions are reached faster. Highly recommended. That price hurdle becomes a distant memory after you’ve lived with the APPLE TV for a week. You wonder why you waited to make streaming so much easier and fun.

Apple TV 4K makes it easy to enjoy 4K HDR content

      • My Best Buy® Elite MemberElite Member

Bottom Line: If you own a 4K TV and are invested in Apple's ecosystem, you need this device. If not, this is a great way to enter the ecosystem and enjoy what Apple has to offer. Pros: easy to setup, fast and fluid UI, 4K HDR content looks great, SIRI remote is fun and easy to use, robust App store, free upgrade to 4K for previous purchases Cons: No YouTube 4K, no Amazon Prime app (although it's coming later this year) Review: Apple TV 4K packs powerful hardware that enables a fast and fluid user interface, a robust set of apps, and some solid gaming. It's a solid improvement in performance over the Apple TV (4th generation). The standout feature is, of course, support for 4K HDR. Simply put, everything looks amazing. The best part is that you won't be short HDR content, especially if you already own movies in iTunes, since Apple provides a free upgrade to 4K for previous purchases. Dark films like Bladerunner look fantastic; watching these films again is like a whole new viewing experience. You'll see things you've never seen before. Setup was a breeze as the ATV detects your TV and HDMI cable's compatibility. Currently the Apple TV 4K lacks Youtube 4K support and the Amazon Prime app (the latter is supposed to be released this year), but these issues are not hardware related. You should also consider a gaming controller since the SIRI remote isn't the best game controller.

      One giant leap for IPTV

      • My Best Buy® Elite Plus MemberElite Plus Member

The Apple TV 4K is definitely a 5 star product for certain people. You fit the bill if: You have a 4K TV, are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem/iTunes, are willing to subscribe to Netflix and/or premium channels/already have cable, and have a strong (above 20 MBPs) internet connection. UI: As per most Apple products the UI is pretty dang flawless. Navigating is easy and the Siri remote works wonderfully and is actually pretty fun to use. Folders and app re-arranging is possible just like in iOS and the amount you can download is only limited to your storage space. I bought the 64GB and have yet to even break the 32GB (base model) mark. Apps: There are a TON of apps, a lot of them with free content. Comet, Shout Factory, Mascot, and Waves to name a few. If you have Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu etc. then this is definitely the best experience for all of them. They work really well with Apple's "TV" app too for endless bingeing with it's resume and up next features. Not to mention: there's a wealth of games and other cool apps to download. Video: One of my favorite features of the aTV is how highly intelligent it is in regards to different resolutions, frame rates, aspect ratios and dynamic range. Since it's recent software update the aTV is able to automatically switch all of these to give you the original content un-altered, on even a 4K TV... Pretty neat. Device: The box itself is super slick and small. It disappears well into your entertainment center and is completely silent thanks to it's tiny fan. There's even an ethernet port on the back for all the hardwire fans. Overall I'm really happy with my Apple TV 4K. I can definitely tell that this is the direction TV will be heading in the future and it's a good start. If you're like me and are still into live TV and DVR functionality it probably won't replace your TiVo/Cable company DVR for the time being but it's definitely a big step forward for IPTV.

      Excellent 4K HDR Picture

I set up my new 4K Apple TV and love it. Set up was very easy as it allows you to use your iPhone or iPad to express set it up or will also let you perform a manual setup. The speed of the new processor is quite an upgrade from the 4th Gen Apple TV that I have on my other television. The picture sharpness and brightness is excellent with the 4K HDR. I had some difficulty at first getting the picture to show in HDR before I realized that my television only supported the highest levels (frequencies) of HDR on HDMI ports 2 and 3. It was great once I figured that out. I use this to stream DirecTV now and HULU. Everything looks better even though the video in those two apps are not currently in 4K resolution. The Siri search feature in the new iOS on this device is extremely helpful. You can tell Siri what television show you want to watch, and it will list all of the ways that you can watch it based on which apps you have installed on your device. It shows both free and paid options based on your subscriptions (Hulu, iTunes, Netflix, etc.). I highly recommend the 4K Apple TV for anyone who is looking for a streaming device for their TV.

      Easy to Use. No Problems

Honestly, this product isn't much different than a Roku, or a smart tv like LG that is very easy to use. My LG tv can share my personal computer screen, or my iphone, and I can play my iTunes or watch a video from my PC, or use any of the apps like Amazon Prime, Hulu, or whatever. And the interface is really easy to use. So, why did I buy this? The digital world has been overturned by the new Disney Movies Anywhere digital locker. The old UV (Ultraviolet) digital locker is now bare bones, and it has many of us scared that we will lose many of our purchased movies. So, I bought this AppleTV, and I will make all my future purchases through Apple. It's a company that I can trust, and it's worth the cost of almost $200, to have that piece of mind and security. Another great benefit AppleTV offers, is Apple will upgrade any movie that you currently have in HD to 4K, if Apple has it in it's digital library. And, if Apple gets a 4K version of a movie in the future, it will upgrade your old purchase to 4K. So, this is a huge benefit. It's also easier to have the iTunes app to stream my music, instead of sharing my iPhone to get this option. Also, the AppleTV is easy to use. It's not radically easier. My LG tv is probably easier, and the Roku does a good job, but the AppleTV is also very easy to use. So, it's a plus. In conclusion, even though the price is steep. It is worth it. I am happy with my purchase.

4K HDR is a nice addition

      • Verified PurchaserVerified Purchase
      • My Best Buy® Elite MemberElite Member

I have had an Apple TV since the 3rd generation. Until the 4th generation. you could not download/install additional applications which meant you were locked in with what Apple offered. The main difference between the 4k (5th generation) and the 4th generation is the addition of 4K HDR support. It also has a faster processor, but I do not notice any difference here in day to day use. If you have a 4K HDR TV, it may be worth getting this model. If you have the 4th generation, but not a 4K tv, you won't notice any advantages over what you already have. Navigating between apps is easy, fast, and smooth, just as it was on the 4th generation. TVOS is improving with each update and allows you to keep all your Apple TVs in sync. Overall I am not a huge fan of the Siri remote. It works well, but still feels a little awkward to maneuver using the touchpad. It would probably be easier if it were a little larger. I found a protective case to put it in and that makes it feel much better. The one annoyance I have is that it asks you for your TV Service provider during setup, then asks if you want to share that with apps when you install them, but even if you select yes, you have to continue to sign into the app. This is likely the app developer and not apple's fault, but it would be nice to see a single sign on for TV apps instead of needing to activate each one. This is overall a great product and continues to get better. If you have a lot of Apple products, I'd choose this over the competition.
