Great laptop for everyday tasks, fancy too
|Posted .This laptop is lightweight, versatile and remarkably fast. I love the touch screen. It is accurate and very convenient. The keyboard is responsive, the armrest is comfortable. I can upgrade the memory to 8GB and the OS to W10. At this price this laptop is a bargain.
I would recommend this to a friendRating 4 out of 5 stars with 1 review
Great everyday laptop
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendGreat laptop. Suitable even for professional use - I wouldn't run photoshop on it, but thanks to 4GB of RAM and full size keyboard it's great for writing emails and browsing. I do quite a bit of IT support and bought it as my main work laptop because it seems to be made of good quality plastic, it's pretty lightweight, possesses (unlike many laptops nowadays) an array of ports (including usb 3.0, hdmi output and a lan port) and as an added bonus it has a dvd drive. Also it's very affordable - it's very nice to throw the laptop in a hurry into a backpack and not worry about it being scratched or damaged. Just have backups and buy another one :) After I bought the laptop I checked the reviews on bestbuy and found many people were unhappy with the celeron processor in the laptop. But I am pretty confident the processor is able to deliver satisfying experience. It does seem to be slow at the beginning. Ask your computer savvy friends to tune it up for you - I'd have mcafee antivirus removed along with most asus utilities (some people find them useful though). Unfortunately this model comes with a hard drive instead of a ssd. It definitely offers more storage but I'd have opted for a better speed instead. The screen is of average quality, but gets the job done. After having said all of the above, I will probably have to return my laptop because of a defect - it works perfectly fine only withing 6 feet from a wifi router. If I move a little further the signal gets completely lost. I have seen such behavior before - usually it means that a wifi card's antenna that goes around a screen is worn or not connected. Unfortunately in my case one of the antenna's ends doesn't even come out from the screen and I don't want to spend time taking apart the laptop completely to get it fixed. I really hope my bestbuy store has one of these as an open box or something, because the last time I checked they offered only a refund, but no replacement. I hope this information helps someone. 4 stars only because I got it defective - otherwise it would be solid 5 stars.

Decent Product on Black Friday Deal
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendThis review is based on the laptop that Best Buy is selling here. I actually own it and have used it. Be leery of fake reviews made by persons who do not/did not actually have the laptop in their possession when they posted their review. First of all, this is a low-end laptop. No one should confuse this with a high end machine, gaming laptop, or anything like that. Its really best suited for web-browsing and other low-end tasks. The processor, memory, disk performance of this laptop is similar to that of low/mid-level laptops that are 5-6 years old. The Celeron N3050 offers about 50% less performance than first generation i3's. It is comparable to Atom processors. The memory is modern, but this is single channel configuration. Only one DIMM is available and it is occupied by a 4GB module. If you want to upgrade, you must take it out and replace with a larger module. The HDD is Seagate brand, which is fine. However, Asus partitioned it roughly 40% for OS(C:\# and 60%#D:\# for you. I do not find that desirable. The usual bloatware is installed. You can take or leave most of it. The very first thing I did #and you should do) was uninstall MacAfee software. Its a big time resource hog that offers no better protection than the built-in free Microsoft solutions. The second thing I did was install Classic Shell Windows 7 style start menu to replace that awful Windows 10 version. Other than that, you should be good to go on basic software. The overall hardware and feel is a mixed bag. The laptop is actually thinner and lighter than I thought it would be. The materials are ok. Screen resolution is fine for a budget laptop. All the usually connectivity is there. However, note that there is no gigabit LAN. Also, the wireless is only N #I believe and not AC capable). There is a USB 3.0 port, which you can use with a multiplier if you need more. This brings me to the only real deal breaker some may experience. Celeron N3050's do not require active cooling thanks to low TDP of 6 watts or less. Also, neither does the low TDP Intel graphics. None needed for the motherboard. I cannot, for the life of me, understand why there is a cooling fan on this laptop. And, get this, it runs on high all the time no matter what. Terribly loud! If you plan to use this in a classroom setting, this will be the deal breaker. There is no way to shut if off or turn down the speed. My Asus G75 gaming laptop is considerably quieter with both fans running during the most intensive tasks I can throw at it. I would be embarrassed to use this in school setting, its so loud. Being that I plan to use it for security camera duty, its fine for me. Others will want to take this back to the store on this point alone. You have been warned. I would take 2 stars off for the fan, but the Black Friday price was pretty fantastic. Overall and within a reasonable expectation, this is a solid low-end laptop.

Great Entry Level Laptop...that MUST be Tweaked...
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendJust purchased this on Friday during the recent sale period for $199. After reading a number of reviews, I decided it was worth a shot purchasing this to fill a void we have between iDevices (ex. tablets, phones, AppleTV, etc) and our main, full-fledged PC. I was pretty sure with a little elbow grease, this would be a perfect way to fill that void and not break the bank, and my gamble was good one. As many of the INFORMATIVE reviews have pointed out, the main thing is to have a realistic expectation of what this laptop will do. It's not a performance laptop by any spec. To keep the roughly $200 price point for an actual laptop, a number of concessions had to be made. The processor is a strong mobile processor...or a weak "PC" processor. The integrated Ethernet LAN is ONLY 10/100...not Gigabit. These are just a few compromises. Layer that with the typical bloatware installed on just about every off the shelf laptop, PC, etc...and you get an awful piece of tech OUT OF THE BOX. However, with a little standard cleanup, this laptop, just like other "bargain" tech, can actually perform well given realistic expectations. The first thing I always do is remove all the bloatware, such as anything with ASUS listed as the "vendor" in the Add/Remove Programs area. Next, remove all the Anti-Virus "Suite" software. It's amazing how many folks will use an overly heavy AV like McAfee. This alone renders the laptop useless, due to all the overhead. And to confirm...yes, the laptop is pretty much non-usable out of the box unless you remove all this stuff. However, basically just uninstalling all this "stuff" and getting back to a core Windows 10 operating system makes this a VERY good laptop. Last thing is making sure to visit the Power Options and tweak the advanced settings to meet your battery performance vs. system performance needs. In our case, we typically have it plugged in...so I prefer maximum performance over power savings. Just make sure that you at least use the embedded Windows Defender once you remove McAfee, etc...then do some research and find a lightweight AV tool to install, if you don't trust or like Windows Defender. Since "tweaking" this laptop, as previously mentioned, I've used the laptop to browse the net, installed my own copy of MS Office, hooked it up to and tested our HP OfficeJet Pro 8610, streamed Netflix, streamed shared uncompressed AVCHD #high-def home video# from our home network, and am extremely pleased with the performance! Again...since it doesn't have Gigabit Ethernet, the wireless on N band is actually faster, with a good signal. Considering you are paying the price of a netbook and getting an actual laptop, this is a fantastic deal that fills a void many homes have between tablets and full blown computing, or if you need a laptop for kiddos/students. The other thing worth mentioning is that since it has an actual hard drive with 500GB of storage, you won't have an issue that many of the "netbook" Windows 10 laptops have, which require quite a bit of involved tweaking to even update the OS to current specs, since the last update from Microsoft was basically a huge service pack and those glorified netbooks didn't typically have enough space to accommodate the update. Set your expectations correctly, put in a little bit of elbow grease, and you won't be disappointed with this laptop.

A Good Buy For It's Price and What IT Is!
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI will not compare this computer to a $1000 computer. So my review hopefully will give you a reasonable idea of what your getting and paying for. Many reviews I read for this laptop said that it was horrible. But as far as I could tell those reviews were based off seemingly very high expectations for a very basic computer. This definitely is not the best computer in the world but it isn't the worst either. It only cost me $250 so I'm really not allowed to throw a fit if something acts up because it's just a cheap basic computer that I bought for mostly basic things (internet browsing, watching movies, and a couple programs). This has a Intel celton processor which yes compared to new technology is definitely on the slower side. But for basic things this is really not a big deal. I can't say I'm a computer nerd or anything, but I know a reasonable amount to be able to say that as long as you aren't using this for gaming, running many programs all at once and going back and forth between them all, that this is overall a good computer for its price. I have had a few minor issues but nothing to cry about. 1. Occasionally the headphone jack either doesn't recognize that my headphones are either plugged in or out when I have recently used my headphones in the jack. So basically sometimes I put my headphones in and the sound will continue to play through the speakers, or vice versa. I take them out and the computer thinks there still in. Not a big deal, sometimes I just have to plug it in and out a couple times and it fixes itself. This may only be a problem with my computer. 2. Sometimes when watching things through Netflix as an example, sometimes the image of what I'm watching will freeze and the sound will continue. After a few seconds the image does catch up. This does happen occasionally but not enough for me to say it's a major problem. It's just a minor annoyance from time to time. I can't really say that it's an issue with my internet because I don't have this same problem when streaming from my phone, which obviously has a faster processor. 3. As I mentioned earlier running too much is not a good idea. It will cause the computer to freeze up a little. Again this is a very basic computer with an older processor compared to what's out there, so if you need to run more than a couple programs at a time and you need to flip back and forth between them, I wouldn't recommend this computer. Overall I really have no complaints about this computer. I knew I couldn't set the bar to high as it is a cheaper model. But for what I'm using it for it works just fine. So if you decide to buy this, keep in mind how much your spending and what your getting in return. It's a good computer for basic everyday tasks. If you need something that does anything more than that don't buy this model and then cry that it sucks and it's a price of junk. It's not a price of junk, you just need to consider your needs and take them into consideration while doing research on a model that will suit your needs. I would definitely recommend this product.

Best bang for the buck for $140
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendIf you bought this on Black Friday for about $140, you got your worth. This computer has many useful ports that you will find to be very helpful. Now, you can't install Windows 7 on this computer because of booting limitations and unsupported drivers (Believe me, I tried). If you go on the ASUS website and find this computer's driver's page, you will find that they only offer drivers for Windows 10 64 bit. The next best thing would be to get programs to make Windows 10 look like Windows 7 if that's what you prefer. Yes, this computer can be upgraded to 8 GBs of RAM, but you have to basically disassemble the computer to get to it which can be shown with this YouTube video (/watch?v=bD5d8iuGQNw). Not only do you have to disassemble it, this computer only has one slot for RAM, so you have to already have a 8 GB stick of RAM to replace the 4 GB of RAM installed. As others have pointed out, uninstall McAfee, or even yet, clean install Windows 10 if you're up to it like I did and then install the drivers that you want on ASUS's website. For those of you who complain about saturation, you can change it in the graphic's properties and make sure that you have the latest drivers through Windows Updates. This computer doesn't have light indicators for caps or num lock so I recommend that you download "TrayStatus". A wireless mouse is recommended if you are right handed because the two USB ports are on the left side as well as every other port except the optical drive. This computer doesn't support 5 Ghz wifi, but it does support 2.4 Ghz. This is a work computer and not the best for most games. If you have any questions, leave a comment and I will try my best to answer them.

A Fantastic Black Friday Door Buster!
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI saw this on sale and thought it was perfect to replace my Mother's dead laptop, and it appears to be a godsend so far! Got to Best Buy for the door busters and scooped it up in time to gift it in person just before Thanksgiving dinner! It had to go through several updates for windows (and it took hours to complete all the updates) but I got it up and running before the night was over, and it runs beautifully! Very quick so far and my mother absolutely loves it! I will update this if she runs into any problems down the road, but I am very thankful this was available at such a great price!

So far so good
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI wanted to wait a couple of weeks before writing a review. I purchased this laptop during the black Friday sale for $152.00 which included tax. So far I have no problems. My only complaint is installing ram in the future. I wish Asus would have made the ram easier to install without unscrewing the back casing . I love the keyboards, their nice and soft to touch. Everything is running smoothly. For those complaining about the slowness I suggest uninstalling programs that you aren't going to use. Download a pc cleaner like CC Cleaner to remove temporary flies and other junk that causes clutter. Use the disk cleaner that's already installed and defragment once a week. This will help speed up your laptop. So far my pc is fast. You get what you pay for but I'm very satisfied with this computer. I was also surprised at the look and exterior of the computer. It doesn't look cheap.
Q: QuestionIs the memory user-upgradable on this unit?I know with the Asus X551, it is very difficult to upgrade the memory and soldered on some units, is this unit memory upgrade-able?

Q: Questionwhat does the trackpad feel like?
Asked by anonymous.
- A:Answer Pretty much like most newer trackpads...no actual buttons. There's a division line at the bottom and the lower portion of the trackpad basically "flexes" to provide left and right click. If you're used to the tactile feel of buttons to click without looking, it'll take a day or two to get used. However, it becomes natural and you don't need to press any harder than a normal trackpad to click. As for "feel" of the surface, it's a little more textured than what I'm used to. Usually, the trackpad is smoother than the rest of the case material. This one is only slightly less textured than the case...and to me feels like I'm sliding on case plastic many times. But, again, nothing that you can't get used to. Overall, sensitivity and behavior is just like any other pad...just "feels" a little different tactile wise.

Question 1: Does laptop has all of this "Wireless-B|Wireless-G|Wireless-N" or any one of this? If Laptop supports any one of this, then what it will Suppport ? Question 2: Will this laptop work in wireless(wifi) mode and connect to any internet router? Question 3: what is meant by "Wireless-B|Wireless-G|Wireless-N"? Advantages and disadvantages
Asked by Rick.
- A:Answer Q1: The unit will work with an older wireless B or G router as well as newer wireless N and A/C routers. Q2: This laptop will connect to a wireless B/G/N or A/C router Q3: The letters B,G,N refer to the technical specifications of IEEE 802.00 wireless WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) communications. (See : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11 for more technical info.) Most new wireless routers available today are either N or A/C (and backward compatible to earlier 802.11 a/b/g specifications.)

Q: QuestionWhat's the battery life?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer I found a spec sheet for it elsewhere, it claims to be a 30 watt-hour battery so you could probably expect 4-5 hours during regular use. Obviously, streaming video or playing video games is going to bring that number down a lot.
