GREAT netbook !!
Posted .i just bught this netbook yesterday, and i love it ! i charged it up fully at about 2:30 pm yesterday, probably only took about an hr to and hr and a half to fully charge....and after it charged i had a good 11 hrs out of it....i mean i was on it all day after i chrged it, probably till about 12 am last night, and i finally had to call it a quits because i was tired, but the batter STILL said 1 hr and 45 min remaining.....GREAT !!!! I do have to add, i dont know how many reviews that i have read about netbooks with windows 7 starter(probably hundreds) and they all say the same thing....that you canot change the desktop background. Well you can ! on that very top of your screen on home page, there should be a tab that is built in to the asus, when you click on it you will see EEE TOOLS, click that too, then click on SYSTEM SETTINGS, and from there you can change the back ground, itll give you option of using a few asus ones, but if you click on the tab in the system setting, you will see the option to use sample pictures as your wallpaper....very easy probably takes about 30 sec from start to finish......something else that was in alot of other reviews was that windows 7 starter canot support and external DVD rom drive, which now makes me wonder if all those people who wrote the reviews just dont know what their doing.... all in all this computer is FANTSTIC !! and i would totaly reccomend this netbook....

Perfect Road Machine
Posted .I was actually considering an iPad...then a sudden road trip came up and I am in the middle of online coursework. I didn't want to take my work laptop on a personal trip, so I opted for a netbook. I am typing this review on it - I have one word - AWESOME. I did need to upgrade the RAM to 2GB, but it was a simple process. I debated for a while about upgrading the OS to Windows 7 Home Premium, but after some research realized it's best to stick with the Starter Edition it came with ($80 for customizable wallpaper and hogging system resources didn't seem prudent). Set up and networking with a Windows 7 desktop was incredibly easy. If you choose to upgrade the memory, Asus is not very clear on this process, so I am posting this here to hopefully help someone who may be researching the same thing I did - in a nutshell: buy a 2GB memory card for notebooks (not a 1GB to upgrade the 1GB that's already in it - there is only one slot), enter BIOS when starting up (F2) and change the Boot Booster ("boot" tab) to "Disable," hit F12 to save, then shut down, remove battery and memory compartment cover, push the two clips out to the sides (memory card will pop up), remove, insert new 2GB card, push down until clips snap, replace cover and battery, restart and hit F2 during boot up, should read that it has 2 GB of memory, change the Boot Booster back to "Enable", hit F12 to save - DONE!

Great Companion Device
Posted .I purchased this unit for college. Windows 7 light is fine for basic computing and there is absolutely no need to purchase the full version for this unit. I purchased a Targus wireless mouse which is a must have. The mouse pad is functional but not optimal. I installed Microsoft Word Pro, deleted Explorer and run both Google Chrome and Firefox web browsers. Internet runs great. The unit comes with 1 gig of ram, which is insufficient, causing an irksome lag when loading documents, powerpoint presentations, etc. A 2 gig stick remedies the lag giving the user the desired pep in functionality. I am a working adult / college student with extensive PC and MAC computing experience. I utilize this unit to access the internet, email/Facebook access, view documents, and to take web based tests on campus. For basic computing purposes this computer does its job well. This is NOT a computer you will want to use for cranking out papers, performing graphic intensive tasks, or surfing the web when a desktop is nearby. The keyboard is too small for speed typing and screen is too small for manipulating graphics effectively. For watching movies I suspect it would suffice on the fly. Do not purchase this unit to replace needs met by a desktop or full size laptop. This is a device designed for fundamental tasks. In a neoprene case it fits snugly in a backpack and does well in a suitcase insulated between clothes. Figure in about $150-200 into your budget to purchase the necessary accoutrements. For the purpose it was purchased for, I am extremely satisfied with this unit. ***The unit will load the Linux O/S Ubuntu for netbooks and function well.

It does what I need it to do
Posted .I needed a small, lighweight computer to take with me when I'm on the road so that I can still do my "home office" work and keep tabs with my email accounts. I also wanted this device to "multitask" and serve as my e-book reader, so that I didn't have to by a Kindle, Nook, or I-pad. This netbook, with a little tweaking, is meeting all my needs. When I bought it, I upgraded to the full Windows 7 and added some RAM. Then I went into the Amazon web site and downloaded the free software to add Kindle to your home computer. As an e-reader, it works great, since I can prop the keyboard part in my lap or on my desk, and read the screen without having to hold the e-reader the whole time I'm reading. I'm very happy with the functionality of the computer. For a small netbook, it does a great job

Stable, easy set up, convenient, great battery
Posted .Purchased the device to avoid carrying a 17" laptop around. Looked around and ended up at Best Buy. Tried the netbooks in stock and after a couple of visits, returned. I purchased the unit and at the time of purchase, obtained the 2gb memory module, an HP netbook sleeve, a Rocketfish mouse with the mini-adapter ($37.99) and a Rocketbook Bluetooth mini-adapter ($39.99). I exchanged the HP netbook sleeve with a Targus peel case. That case was exchanged after I purchased a Swiss Gear case from another supplier. The mouse and Bluetooth adapters are never removed from the computer, even when it is in the case. The main reasons I purchased this unit: battery life, hard disk size, keyboard performance, and the sales person stating she owned last year's model and was able to discuss the pro's/con's in detail. She did state the 1gb of memory was ok for most people, but the 2gb would deliver better performance. I generally disable the touch-pad due to cursor control problems,. With it disabled, the cursor does fine and the cursor does not go to any unknown locations. I installed Microsoft Security Essentials, Firefox, Thunderbird, Open Office, WordPerfect, Omniform and HanDBase. Omniform is an older release from about 10 years ago, so its support is not the best, but it still works for basic form filling and design. There is the occasional time needed for the system to catch up; but overall performance is good when running these applications. Connecting the netbook to my Windows Mobile device was a breeze, though I did have to download the latest release of Microsoft's Sync Center, I can effortlessly and quickly move files back and forth between the 2. In addition, connecting it to the home network was painless and I have the ability to interact with three other computers and a system printer. I use the device for data entry with both HanDBase and Excel, email, surfing the web, etc. It handles these tasks very well. The slow down is there, when starting up Firefox, as it indexes the message database with 2 IMAP services, Dislike: the keyboard does make noise; however, it is accurate and after a few moments of typing on it, easy to use. I do lots of typing on the Dell 17". Skype is a bit sluggish, but not overly so. I would like the option to add more memory. Like: size, battery life and the 250gb hard drive. The screen is also good and easy to read. I have had no crashes, Had I purchased this to replace my full-size laptop, I would be most unhappy; however, it was purchased with emphasis placed on size and portability, and therefore I am very happy with it. I hated carrying the larger laptop around for small amounts of data entry; this one does fine. For extensive data entry though, a full size keyboard is a plus. It handles a wireless keyboard very well.

Excellent Netbook for Price. Long Battery Life
Posted .This little netbook is worth every penny paid. My 4 year old HP laptop died on me, so I decided to try a netbook since I travel a lot and didn't need two full size laptops. If you are expecting performance of a full size laptop, you might be a little disappointed. It is a bit sluggish, but I was expecting it, so I was not disappointed. I upgraded the RAM to 2 GB and noticed a big increase in performance. For a basic mini laptop for basic web surfing, web camera and light word processing, this mini laptop does a great job. The color and style is top notch. Battery life if excellent. Over 9 hrs of battery life on a single charge. I think I could have gotten more, however I was doing a lot of file transferring so the CPU was working hard. Best Buy Shipping was great. 6 days to an overseas military APO address. One of the fastest shipping times I have ever seen to an APO.

good after initial setup
Posted .i have only had this laptop for one day. it took about 2 hours for the initial startup. that was not a good sign. after another 2 hours of uninstalling unnecessary programs, i was really frustrated. it took another hour to install the full version of microsoft office and other programs i like. then, i was able to transfer about 100 gb of data from another hard drive. now, it is running like a champ. i have had several high end laptops. however, i always felt like i had more power and memory than was necessary. i primarily surf the internet, watch streaming netflix, and use all microsoft office applicaitons. i'm not big into pictures or video editing. so, my assumptions were right. the atom processor seems to be plenty fast enough for normal applications. expect slow performance for downloading, installing, and uninstalling major programs. but this little laptop has plenty of speed and memory for the normal user. the keyboard is big enough for me, but i have small hands. internet surfing is fast. i like the rubberized finish on the top of the laptop. the mousepad is textured, which is a major plus, and the two finger scroll works well. all in all, its a really good little machine for the money. only downside is no optical drive. but that's the case with all netbooks. hope this helps.

Brilliant device
Posted .I've had this for a couple of weeks now and wanted to share with you a few things about this netbook. Firstly, the performance is really quite good. I've never had a netbook before and was expecting it to be slow and only capable of running 2 or 3 applications simultaneously without crashing. In reality, with the n450 processor and upgraded to 2GB of RAM, the performance is all I'd ever want from a computer with 10 hour battery life. I was considering going for an ION-based netbook like the 1201N or HP 311 but the hit in battery life is significant and not worth it. And note, with a little work with audio and video codecs, 720p HD video plays beautifully in WMP. Because of that if you are thinking about waiting for the Broadcom HD accelerator, I wouldn't purely because, from what I have read, it still doesn't do flash-based HD video and gets you 720p HD (or exactly what you get with a little codec love right now). The keyboard is also very good. It feels a little cheap (for a 320 buck computer, it's wonderful) but the keys are perfectly spaced and make typing feel just as natural as it would on a bigger keyboard. In addition, the size and weight strikes the perfect balance between big enough to be comfortable, but small enough to be light. As a result, I wouldn't really bother with an 11 or 12 inch screen. Overall, I didn't think I needed a netbook so much (my old 13 inch laptop I thought was portable enough) until I got this. Now I don't know how I got on without it. I would just recommend a 2GB RAM upgrade. It ran more than fine with 1, but with 2 the system is noticeably smoother and quicker. For 320, you can't do better than this.
