Purchased for my son for college
|Posted .He loves everything about it. Lots of memory, enough RAM to run his engineering program. Easy to use. He loves the touch screen.
I would recommend this to a friendRating 4 out of 5 stars with 1 review
Excellent value and design...
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI spent about two hours at a "local" Best Buy recently. I was looking for a thin, lightweight laptop with good battery life for work. I'm a gamer, so I already have a gaming desktop and a gaming laptop. Unfortunately the gaming laptop does not have the battery life I need for work. Anything in this price range is going to do the basics - word processing, e-mail, web, etc. But I was curious about the graphical performance of the HD 4400, so I loaded my favorite game (KSP) onto a flash drive, took it into the store and got the ok to run a few benchmarks. The results surprised me. Firstly, there's a rather significant difference between the i5-4210y (HD 4200) and the i5-4210u (HD 4400), with the 4210u trouncing the performance of the y. I really thought they's be closer. Secondly - shockingly enough, there were some significant differences between machines that were kitted out with the exact same hardware. Of those, this one was noticeably superior in the graphical benchmarks. I should note there were other machines there with a slightly higher resolution screen, and hybrid or SSD drives in the same price range (including one that I had actually ordered from a factory online outlet and wound up returning due to refurb issues), and ultimately I choose this one over those. Cons: The screen is somewhat washed out. Changing from the default settings helps some, but it's not going to drastically improve it. Fortunately, it's only REALLY noticeable when you have it side by side another monitor. I can live with it, but it would be a major upgrade for them to change to something with a little better contrast and viewing angles. Secondly, there really isn't any excuse for not using a hybrid drive today. While they don't really help with program load times, they do massively speed up the boot process - something that's very important if you intend to use this in tablet mode. My third little grip is that the keyboard back lighting is uneven, making it somewhat hard to read at any but the highest settings. Buyers also need to be aware there is no Ethernet port, and the two USB 3 ports do not use the "suggested" standard blue plastic. As another user mentioned, the power button is in a really stupid position. I've accidentally shut the computer down several times while reaching for the volume control. However, given the fact that this transforms into a sortof tablet, they couldn't put the power button in the standard spot on top of the keyboard. Windows 8.1 - First thing I always do is install Start8. Windows 8.1 - seriously MS, I don't want to have to give out an internet id to use a local laptop. Please stop making it a PITA to get around that. Pros: At 3.8 lbs, it's sufficiently lightweight to take just about anywhere. Great Styling Asus did SOMETHING right in optimizing this systems graphical performance. I don't know if it's the bus subsystem, higher speed ram, optimized drivers, but there was a noticeable difference with this unit. I am EXTREMELY pleased with it's performance. I was expecting nothing, but this has run nearly everything I've thrown at it over the weekend. *Tiny* power adapter. 500 gb HDD. Even though it's slow, and small for a standard HDD, it's a whole lot easier to live with than a 128gb SSD. Unknowns: Battery life. I'm assuming it's going to be sufficient, but have not checked that yet. Verdict: It's a keeper. Pretty pleased. It's a far cry from perfect (even at it's price point) but it meets my needs.

Great laptop for a student
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendHere's why I love this laptop: Appearance - The keys on the keyboard are silver, and the letters ACTUALLY LIGHT UP! It's gorgeous. It kind of reminds me of a Mac, except the colors are inverted. Size - Lightweight. Perfect for carrying around campus. Also small enough to fit on one of those annoyingly tiny tables you find at coffee shops. Battery life - GREAT. I'm used to a Dell, which lasts only 4 hours. This one lasts 6-8hrs (I haven't timed it-- sorry), which, again, is great for carrying around campus all day! Other features - It has a touch screen, and you can flip the screen around so it basically becomes a tablet! This means you can write on it, which is great for taking notes in class. The only negatives are that: There is no CD drive. I had to buy an external one. However, the external one I bought was pretty great, so I don't even mind this that much. That's really it, so far. I seriously love this thing.

Best Value For The Money
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI was looking for a laptop for my mother in-law. Her Dell 15" graphics card died. It took some time and research when I found this nice Asus. She travels and this 13" Asus seemed like a nice compromise. It's light, great power (Core i5), 8 GB of memory and good hard drive space. The 2 in 1 is a nice feature and this was my first experience with a touchscreen laptop. I'm a fairly advanced computer user and am the go to in the family for technology help. Windows 8.1 has been the biggest challenge. I took some time going over the basic changes to the laptop with the mother in-law. She really loves the laptop and I'm the new hero. Overall this has been a great laptop. It still gets a little warm, no replaceable battery, it's a 720P display and you have to uninstall some bundled software. The touchscreen is responsive and good colors. I'm happy with the performance and the 2 in 1 feature is nice. For the money you can't get much better. The only other laptop with the same basic specs that I would have considered would have been the Lenovo, but it was too much money. Whether traveling, need a desktop replacement, or use it sitting on the couch you can't go wrong. It's just not gonna work for any heavy gaming.

Great value laptop
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendGreat laptop for the value. I use for school/movies. Touch screen and convertible screen are nice with Windows 8.1, reading texts, browsing news or youtube, and 8.1 specific apps. 1080p HD supported with HDMI. However screen is lacking. Glossy finish creates glare even at ambient light. Color flickers at times, maybe due to convertible hinge or I may have a lemon. Computer casing is metal, sturdy and looks nice and sleek. Keyboard keys are cheap plastic, however absolutely no functional problems. Track pad is responsive with nice gesture commands that I'm used to in MacOSX. Hinge for convertible screen has me concerned for durability, but no signs of weakness 1 month of daily use. Internals are nice for price point, one of main reasons I chose. Don't expect high end gaming. Windows 8.1 runs without a hitch. Mail, word processing, streaming videos without difficulty. Overall very pleased for what I paid, and overall pleased with the quality.

Great power in a conveniently small package
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI was looking for a small tablet/laptop for the aspiring author in the family, whose 9-year-old laptop display was starting to give out. Said he didn't want a two-in-one with a detachable screen, so when I gave that requirement to the Best Buy sales person, he pointed me to this model. Although the screen doesn't detach, it DOES flip over and lock the keyboard, turning the laptop into a tablet -- very handy for watching videos! Comes with a two-core I-5 processor that'll run four threads, 8 gigs of memory, a 500 gig hard drive and a chiclet-style back-lit keyboard in a metal case. It is solid Asus quality through and through! At this price point, the only complaint I have is the lack of an RJ-45 jack for gigabit ethernet, but it runs 803.11ac with your local Wi-Fi hotspot. I won't complain about the lack of an optical drive -- you can buy one for under $20. Battery life is outstanding - 8 hours on a single charge! I liked it so much, I bought 2, and gave the other one to the budding artist in the family!

A laptop for all
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendTo begin, I am starting college and needed a great laptop to satisfy all my needs. After days of searching far and wide I stumbled upon this beauty. The sleek black gloss it creates is remarkable. Some things I first notice about this laptop is that it has a touch screen feature. Which is cool and all but the best is coming up. I played around a bit with it and discovered it can rotate and transform into a tablet. It made my world to discover this amazing feature. As a college student I wanted a MacBook Pro. But, Apple is notorious for their high end prices so I had to kiss that option good buy. Out of all the laptops I have looked at I believe this would be the one. Here are some Pros and cons about it that I discovered. Pros (be prepared for wall of text): -light weight(ish) -all black -light up keyboard with adjustable lighting -bluetooth -transforms into a tablet -long battery life -stylish -sexy -and a eye pleaser -Fans aren't located at the bottom(+) Cons: -windows 8 interface (I'll clarify it at the bottom) -power button is on the side. If you accidently was to hold it down your computer would turn off. -speakers are located at the bottom of the laptop . Underneath on each side is where they are located at. About you windows 8, it's me not you. I know you have moved up in life but change isn't good. You're now confused and to complicated to adjust too. I am not liking the swipe on the screen and having to go threw a bunch of step to turn on/off something. Also, if I can add , you need to stop it with "sign in with your Microsoft ID in order to proceed with your life" PLEASE don't, K? -Love always Junhophan P.S. I will make this work, for the both of us. Overall this computer is everything I wanted. If you are looking in the market for a well rounded laptop and on the fence jump over to this side and pick yourself up a ASUS laptop!

Great computer for the price
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI bought this laptop from amazon, it is a great laptop for the price. The computer seems like good quality, It works fast, and the size is great. The charger is very small and that makes it easy to transport. The 2 in 1 features work pretty well, but skype and firefox tends to freeze up for a bit when you change positions, but its really a minor bug. I think it is a great computer for the price. Bluetooth and wi-fi work well. The sound is a little weak but its more than ok considering the laptop size. I've seen a lot of bigger laptops with a lot worse sound. My laptop didn't come with a lot of bloatware and the little bloatware it came with was very easy to remove (I bought mine from amazon so I don't know if the best buy version comes with other programs pre-installed). Another thing i would change is that I would position the ON button and the windows button (especially the windows button) on the front of the laptop and not on the side, but again this is a minor change. Overall I am very pleased and I would recommend this laptop.
Q: QuestionHow do I keep the screen from dimming?I have the screen brightness at the max level, but the screen still will dime while in use. The screen is not going to sleep, but reducing brightness.
Asked by Meerah.
- A:Answer If you look at the "A" key on your keyboard, you will see an "Auto" symbol. This is to turn on/off the automatic screen brightness and this is why your screen is dimming. Simply hold the FN key while pressing A to toggle this feature on or off.

Q: Questiongenerally should you hear the fan noise?periodically i can hear the fan noise, then it goes silently. its not when i stop doing something that it stops making the noise, its during everything. the same thing happens with the brightness on my screen, it changes from lighter to darker without warning.
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer You fan is going to increase in speed if the internal temperature goes above a certain setting. This is to keep everything working optimally. I wouldn't worry about it. As far as the screen dimming... you'll have to turn off the adaptive brightness setting in Widow's power setting. See http://lifehacker.com/disable-windows-annoying-adaptive-brightness-feature-on-1567886994 for how to do it.

Asked by new user.
- A:Answer the touchscreen should work all of the time. when you flip the screen back to tablet mode it should disable the keyboard. i would call asus customer service.

Q: Questionviewing angleit was mentioned that the screen has a very narrow viewing angle, this means to me that one must be essentially in a straight line to the screen - tip it forward or backwards and and the view dissipates to nothing. can someone verify this for me?
Asked by rockinferd.
- A:Answer you are right about the viewing angle, but I prefer a smaller angle for privacy.
