Great LaptopPosted .
I've used this laptop for more than a month now and i've just started to understand the power that lies within under. The 460M(2.53GHz-2.8GHz on Turbo Boost) and 4 Gb provides me enough background to run any application. The Intel 5700M HD graphics card plays games(PES 2011,Need For Speed,Call of Duty:Black Ops) on low quality, but opens HD video (720p and blu ray-on external display - the inbuild is 768) without a glitch. I also connect it with external displays and projectors everyday to watch movies or for my presentations.I saw on the internet that the graphics card can be upgraded to a dedicated one without much spending. I use at home(internet, playing games, watchin movies),on the move,at school(presentations and taking notes) and when trying to work on my powerpoints in a caffeteria or something. I've used it with powerpoint 2010 with clone or extended display and with heavy animated effects and transitions without having a single problem. What i love about this laptop is the ability to connect with external display quickly and without headaches. Also the battery life is very good. With some tweaks i've managed to extend the battery life to 10.5 hours. The battery life while working on powerpoint and browsing at the same time is around 6.5-7 hours. When watchin hd movies on built in display 4-4.5 hours and when playing Pes 2011 3-3.5 hours. On 1 month of using the battery almost everyday without fully discharching it, it has wore out only 1.8%.You're gonna need a replacement after 3 years if u use it the same way as i do! The computer came with a lot of software which seems not to be as unuseful as usual. There are even programs like Asus SmartLogon(face recognition)and Power4Gear Hybrid(battery life extender and power saver) which attracted my attention. The Asus also provided all the drivers and some great wallpapers! The display looks fantastic. The camera has great 2.0 Megapixel quality. The touchpad is ultrasensitive and so easy to use. The palm rest is very helpful! The display can be extended to 145 degrees and has a 180 degrees view angle. The Wimax and the wireless card both work great and consume little energy. The keyboard feels natural and seems to be lifelong. The laptop doesn't run hot on your hands or lap and the cooler is really quiet(i cant hear it even at night and on active cooling form). There is no USB 3.0 port.Only 3 Usb 2.0 ports which work great by the way. Also the VGA,HDMI,Mic and Headset port work great. The card reader works great too. The only problem, as i mentioned, is the graphics card, which is GMA and not UMA. Anyway it can be upgraded. The laptops motherboard(Asus U53 not U52) supports Nvidia Optimus Technology. Hope I've been helpful!I would recommend this to a friend

Great laptop. Great value.Posted .
I got this laptop for a free exchange because they ran out of the i3 version. Basically, it's the same laptop but with a better processor and larger hard drive. Overall, it's great. The design of the laptop is flawless. And the chiclet style keyboard is always a plus. There are still some problems with the trackpad though. Sometimes it will randomly stop working. I hope there is a fix coming fot that. And with the new i5 processor, it should at least come with a 1600x900 screen resolution. Although it uses the same 8 cell battery as the i3 version, the battery still lasts for ever. While under entertainment mode and in a lecture class, the battery reports 6h and 5min left, which is amazing. Can't really comment on the wimax as i don't have it but i'm sure it works fine.. Also, there are some misconceptions with the specification on the bestbuy page. It does NOT have usb 3.0 Only the other U series laptops (bamboo) have a USB 3.0 port. And the processor is an i5 460m @ 2.53ghz with turbo boost to 2.8ghz. And if you enable extreme turbo within the bios it's up to 2.96ghz.. It NEVER gets to 3.0ghz. The memory card reader is NOT that good. It only reads name brand sd cards. It also states it has 4 gigs of ram, but like the i3 version, some of it is used to power the intel integrated graphics so when you see 3.79gb usable, don't panic. Also, don't expect to game on this laptop. HD graphics aren't meant for that. Overall, i still think it's a great laptop thats worth the price tag (considering its retail).I would recommend this to a friend

Excellent laptopPosted .
I previously had Dell and HP laptops that performed well and were reasonably priced. This Asus however, is a quite amazing deal for the setup you get. The i5 processor is extremely fast, a nice step up from the core duo and athlon II on my previous laptops. 4GB of RAM will let the average user do just about anything, and 640GB for a laptop is much larger than those on comparable systems generally. I like the soft feel of the top and the grips on the bottom. The color is also quite nice compared to the standard black I had before. It is not as visually striking as say, a Mac, but at least it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It weighs a bit more than I expected, but it seems quite solidly built and I generally leave it plugged in, but the battery operates between 4.5-6.5 hours, depending on what I am doing, though as noted by a previous reviewer, I could probably get a fair amount more out of it. I like the dual boot function and most of the games I have tried all work pretty smooth on medium settings. It probably won't play brand new block busters, but for a laptop, I was pleasantly surprised. The screen is also nice and bright compared to my Dell, which was horribly dark when not plugged in. Overall, I think it is a great mid-range laptop that will see most users through all of their needs.I would recommend this to a friend

A Powerful Work Laptop With Only Minor ProblemsPosted .
I've had this laptop for over a month now (when it was one hundred bucks cheaper at Best Buy) and it has been running smoothly after some tweeking (startup programs, touch pad, Win 7 tweeks, etc.). The Asus U52f runs Adobe Photoshop, Captivate, Premiere, and Dreamweaver pretty smoothly with little hickups or the PC freezing. My only complaints thus far have been the touchpad being ultra sensitive and at times freezing up on me and the lousy sounding speakers. In fact the touch pad is my only real complaint about this laptop since this is not a laptop meant for multi-media (so I'll let the junky speakers slide on this review). The touch pad is so irritating at times that I have to plug in the wireless mouse from my desktop just to get the bulk of my work done. You may want to try this laptop out in a store before you buy it, since the touch pad could be a deal breaker for most business people who do not want to carry around a mouse with them. When testing this laptop out, the touch pad may seem responsive at first, but once you start using it for a while it really gets annoying and unresponsive. Hopefully Asus will have a driver or software fix for this in the future (if this is in fact a software and not a hardware issue). Also Note: Linux Ubuntu users will have a bit of a hard time with the Wifi and the touch pad and getting Ubuntu to recognize this hardware correctly. My Battery life: 4-5 hours depending upon how bright I want the LCD display to be and the amount of multi-tasking I'm doing. If you turn off the wireless, lower the screen brightness and run 2 or less programs simultaneously you can easily get 5-6 hours of battery life on this laptop. Display for graphics and movie watching: Excellent 1366 x 768 Sound from internal laptop speakers: Poor. You would be better off connecting external speakers or a set of headphones to make up for the lackluster sound. External ports/plugs: 3 USB 2.0 ports (one on the right side, 2 on the left side)---HEY BESTBUY.com this computer does not have a USB 3.0 port like it states on the product description!!! HDMI standard port on the left side, 5 in 1 multi card reader on the left side, mic/line-in and headphone jack on left side towards the front of the computer. Full number pad on the right side of the keyboard- great for accountants and business professionals. Monitor off function just like on Mac computers (press Function key + F7), handy for saving battery life when stepping away from your laptop. Nice chicklet style keyboard makes typing easy. Overall an excellent no-frills work laptop. If you are looking for an entertainment laptop you should look at other high end model laptops.I would recommend this to a friend

GREAT honest reviewPosted .
let me start by saying READ THE FINE LINES in everything with best buy ESPECIALLY the accidental damage coverage.... with that said on with the review. As my dells replacement I paid a few extra bucks and got a Sony vaio running dang near the same specs as this asus but with an i3 processor. As a DJ i run Serato scratch live and ableton live together while running two midi controllers. needless to say that this computer could not stand up to the test being thrown at is in even the slightest. my music crackled like crazy, the screen lagged and the applications even closed themselves a couple of times. Well thats when I got smart and traded for the asus and its beefed up i5. I had looked at for hours on ratings for Speed, Design and Reliability and the Asus was the way. Known as the most reliable laptop producer on the market and with their extremal simple but powerful machines it was a no brainer. I reviewed the speed tests from pcmag.com side by side with many machines including the Sony I had purchased and it ranked up in the top percent for its speed and price ratio. Combine that with its amazing dependability scores and the asus was the way to go. Now all my apps and midi controllers run seamlessly and I dont have to worry about a embarrassing music drop in the middle of a set. for $779.99 there is not a better all around laptop... the display is nothing to fancy but it works great for what I do and the occasional movie. its not quite the i7 but its a huge step up from the i3 in the sony. Oh and the battery rocks it runs for just over 6 hours on power saver mode. ps. best buy has the item mislabled in a few areas. read correct specs from anywhere else on the web. the following are incorrect. 2.53ghz NOT the posted 3.0ghz x three 2.0 usb ports NOT the posted x one 3.0 usb 6 cell battery NOT the posted 8 cell (not that it keeps it from a extremely long life on the battery)I would recommend this to a friend

Some people need to read...Posted .
First off I want to say this. For those who say that their laptop is not lasting 6.5 hours...Best Buy never stated it will be 6.5 hourse. They stated that is can go UP TO 6.5 hours. So you pretty much have to use it for the internet or whatever that does not take much power to use, also they probably take into consideration the power use settings like screen brightness. Alright well this computer is great. The setup was fast and easy to follow. My battery is lasting about 3-4 hours which is great for a non-mac laptop. I have not had any problems loading or downloading anything and it is a fast laptop. I am very glad I got this laptop and I will be using this for many years.I would recommend this to a friend

Excellent laptopPosted .
Even though I missed deals on some very similar laptops during Christmastime, this is a great machine. Supposedly it has a USB 3 port, however I have not been able to personally verify this by connecting a USB 3 device to it yet. I chatted with Asus, and they insist it does have one, even though all 3 USB ports look exactly the same. It has a special power button, which, in only about 6 seconds, boots into a special Linux-based OS (branded as Asus Expressgate) with a Web browser (very similar to Firefox), Music player, photo viewer, plus a couple other apps.) Therefore, within 10 seconds from pushing the special button, you can be on the web, connected to Wifi and all. ExpressGate apparently boots partially from the BIOS, and then the rest is from a small partition. On a cool related note, I set up the machine for dual boot with 64-bit Ubuntu Linux 10.10 and Windows 7 right away (with Win7 pre-installed from the factory). This did not affect the ExpressGate OS at all! I thought putting GRUB (commonly used for dual-booting multiple operating systems on a machine) on as the boot loader as part of installing Linux might confuse the system while it tried to start ExpressGate. So in summary, you can put at least Linux on this along with Windows 7, and still have the ExpressGate button (on upper-left) work fine to bring up the special limited system. In practice, I don't bring up ExpressGate much, because I never know if I want to do something else or not, and 64-bit Ubuntu boots in maybe 20-25 seconds or so, which lets me do far more. It would be nice if there was an ESATA port also, but they chose to put USB 3 on instead, and there is an HDMI port. ESATA would have bumped the price up. Note: the speakers are diagonally-firing down from under the front of the machine. This seems to be normal with Asus boxes. We have a Toshiba as well, and I prefer those speakers a bit, especially if it's on your lap, because sound doesn't reflect off a leg or other parts of your lap as well as a desk :) The sound has good detail though. Make sure you know what you're getting before purchase though. Heavy gamers may want to look at a machine with a dedicated graphics chip. You could find one similar to this price if you went a step down from the Core i5 - which may still be plenty of CPU power. Final note: it has only a 5400RPM drive. Plus to this (maybe) is slight lower power consumption depending on how you run apps and thus some battery savings, but minus is a little performance hit while booting the OS or loading apps. This does not have super-long battery life, but you could but a larger battery if you want. Expect no more than 3 hours or so out - if not using machine real aggressively during the time. Enjoy.I would recommend this to a friend

Works wellPosted .
I've recently bought this product at a local bestbuy store and so far it has been well worth the money. The keys are very comfortable to type with and they are well spaced out. It doesn't take long to adjust to the chicklet style, and the palm rest keeps the typing experience cool and comfortable. The screen is nice and bright, making it easy to read and see what's going on. The i5 processer makes use quick and easy. The touchpad is a bit sensitive and takes a little bit to get used to, but for the most part it is easy to handle. As for battery life, it seems to last a long time. I've been on the computer for at least five hours without having to charge it at all. The bestbuy description of battery life is close, if not accurate. Holding your mouse over the battery icon will give fickle times, so it takes a while before you get the general idea of how much time you have. Overall, this laptop has been well worth the price in my experience and is generally easy to use. I have not encountered any issues, and I hope the same for others that choose to purchase this laptop.I would recommend this to a friend
