great with few minor annoyances
Posted .i ordered this laptop yesterday and picked it up at a local bestbuy store in an hour. This laptop was not on display so had to take the chance and buy it. So far I find it very impressive. I work as a design engineer and so am very observant on bad design and ergonomics. So I may be judging the laptop a bit too harsh. Annoyances that I noticed so far: 1. Charging port at the center of left side. Wat a bad design call! What this means is every time you have the laptop in front of you, you will have the charging cord running close to your leg. 2. Arrow keys are small. I could have sacrificed the number pad for it 3. palm-rest is not rubberized like all other ASUS models. It is a corrugated surface which is not bad but rubber would have been better 4. the mouse pad is too slippery.. need better grip 5. annoying LED lit power switch which is a distraction in the dark 6. 0.3 Mp camera! is it a joke?! even smartphones these days are having 2 Mp front facing cameras 7. Lot of ASUS bloatware we have no use of 8. sound is not loud but clarity is okay 9. keyboard frame is not very firm. you can see it bend even when exerting little force. 10. no backlit keyboard 11. wish there was more color choice 12. No charger cord LED. around 6 useless LEDs on the front which a normal user would not care 13. No USB 3.0 which is becoming the norm these days Let me talk about the positives: 1. For 449$ and ASUS brand, it is a steal! go grab it! 2. keyboard typing experience and touchpad are fantastic. I have tried all brand and found this to be the best 3. no manuals, cds and all the stuff we normally get with laptops and hardly ever use.. there is an ASUS live-update app which takes care of all driver updates 4. laptop looks good. texture on the case is very impressive Final word: For its price, dont expect something upscale! This is one basic laptop, and I love the simple and study design aspects.

Great laptop for the money!!!!!!
Posted .I bought this laptop a couple weeks ago and i love it!!! i use it mostly for music, school, internet and some light games. i was nervous about at first because i didn't see it on display but after a few hours i was in love with it. the only thing is the web cam isn't that great, but i never use it so i guess its OK. the computer is fast handles everything i throw at it. made restore disks really quick, uploads cds fast and doesn't get boggled down. as far as physical goes it has a really nice design and the keyboard is great for typing. the sound is great. the only thing i would have liked more is a larger battery but then again this is a $450 laptop. The I5 has more then payed for itself. I would recommend this computer to anyone looking for a computer that needs things done fast and easy. I don't understand why people are complaining about the laptop when they do something to wreck the computer. Or if its a lemon. All i can say is this works great and i don't regret the purchase at all. If i spill something on it or drop it then its on me. Unless I decided to purchase the service plan that protects it from those things. i haven't decided yet. I have already told some friends at school who are looking into a laptop that this is the best deal right now!!!

Unbeatable for the price
Posted .I was looking to replace my aging Viao (never again), but I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg. I'm a bit of geek, so I purchased this on specs. alone. When I got it I was pleasantly surprised on the quality. Coming from a high-end machine, I was concerned about build quality. The only disappointing thing I noticed is that viewing angles on the screen are not great. There's about a 20 degree sweet spot that looks great, after that it washes out quickly. Also, the backlight defaults to "10", which is blinding. LED's fade over time, so it's good to have some extra brightness in reserve. The case also felt a little more flimsy than the Viao. Lots of pluses on this model, at the proper angle the screen looks great, the sound is actually better than my Viao, but does clip at high volume. The multi-touch pad is the best I have ever used. The keyboard feels solid as well. Battery life is great. I can easily get 4 hours at normal use (backlight at 5-7). This also has GigaBit Ethernet, I think everyone should look for a laptop that either has GBE, USB3, or accepts ExpressCards, preferably the latter. Mods: I was happy to see that it came with a single 4GB module. I managed to pickup another one for <$20. That raised my Windows score for 4.7 to 5.9 improving both graphics and memory speed. It only takes two screws to remove the back panel. Everyone who can should do this. Next, that wonderfully large HDD had to go. I'm all about SSD. With an SSD and a RamDisk browser cache, VaVaVoom, this thing flies. Nerdvana. Very happy.

Best for its price
Posted .I was looking at the ASUS A53E-EH71 with an i7 but it was expensive. It was not even $1,000 so I was surprised. Still, it was over my budget so I went to my local best buy and found this laptop. I was amazed at the low price for an i5 processor. I bought it and I have noticed a few things. I like to use it on my bed for hours at a time and it doesn't get hot at all. I play games on it and it has great graphics. The keys have a very satisfying feel to them when you are typing,Which is probably why i am going in to so much detail☺. I am also glad that it has an fn and an alt key. I like the side number key, which you use for the calculator and the fn alt key. There is only one downside to this laptop, the charging outlet is in the middle of the left side of the laptop. It doesn't bother me much, but it might to people with limited outlets. overall, this is a great laptop.

Excellent for student
Posted .I have been looking at this computer for several days and comparing it to Toshiba and Lenovo. I like all three brands, but I ultimately went for this computer due to finances and the reviews and specs. Here is what I have experienced so far. Boot up takes about 45 seconds from power on to opening browsers and checking email. Power down about 15 seconds. Web browsing is faster than my prior computer and faster than a quad core desktop here at home, impressed. The sound quality is honestly not the highest quality but it gets the job done. My Toshiba that died had Harman Kardon speakers and they were great. This one you have you turn up 100 to get a loud sound, but you can still hear it pretty well at 80 percent. It is still early to give. I like the keys but have to be careful with my wrists because while typing it can jump over the place and cause you to start mis-typing. Overall this computer has ran for 14 hours so its too early to give a great review, but compared to my prior Toshiba, which I spent a fortune for 2 years ago, this thing far surpasses it. I hope it holds up to my expectations. I am an undergrad student and will need this for school, so I am pretty confident it will fulfill my needs. I like this product and I am excited about it. I would recommend to others. I rated this 5 stars because for a 450 dollar laptop computer it surpassed my 900$ Toshiba laptop that died, so I am impressed with the performance to cost ratio. Programs generally open in a fraction of a second. I am pleased with this product. Just happy with this computer and do recommend. I also have the Asus EEE Pad Transformer and I am beginning to become partial to this company. Good product.

great great great great!
Posted .i researched this laptop for many weeks online, and i even went into my local best buy a few times to check it out. once i bought it, i never looked back! the speed is amazingly fast. i know it might be because it's new, but when i had 3 programs running and four internet tabs open, it ran with great speed, and because i am so quick on a computer, i feel this is one of the best aspects. i like how the keys are spaced so i don't mistype so easily... the only bad thing is that you had to sacrifice size for spacing, and this keys are a little "stick" so to speak. one must type a little harder than normal to get a character. for me, it's a little annoying that the touchpad is not centered--it's centered on the non-numeric-keyboard, but i don't think many will have much problems as this is a picky subject also the left and right clicks are a little loud, but again, that's probably me being picky. bottom line: one of the best computers for it's price!

For the money, it can't be beat
Posted .I spent two hours at a best buy store looking at this computer and comparing it to a comparable DELL and an even better I7 Dell. After reading reviews and comparing specs back and forth, i passed on the Dell because the reviews were half and half on the out of the box reliability on the Dell. I was plesently surprised. The biggest complaints on this machine were due to the Web Cam being of poor quality and the Power cord plugging into the side. For me the power cord in the side is just fine, the web cam is not that significant to me. I was amazed that this smaller machine had such a great display. THe touch pad has a great feel to it. My biggest complaint is the numeric keypad which offsets the center of the keyboard. It would help if there was a back lighted keypad. I do a lot of computing in the dark. Machine speed is excellent and the size and weight great. If you just want a good all around laptop without the big screen and a light portable weight, this is your machine. My biggest dread anymore buying anything is the buyers remorse I experience with so many items that when you take them home dont live up to expectations. Not so here. I am thoroughly satisfied with this machine. If you are looking for the biggest and the best, probably should look elsewhere but like so many others have said, good bang for the buck.

Very happy with this laptop
Posted .We had planned to purchase another laptop but it was sold out. After looking at the specs and price, we decided to buy this one. We have only had it for 2 days, however, we are very pleased so far. It has a full numerical keypad. The mouse is centered under the alphabetic keyboard. The brown case is dark and stylish in design. The processor is very fast. Quick and easy to set up. Cons: Speakers are somewhat lacking, but it's a laptop. How much sound can you expect? The keyboard is not backlit, but that isn't a standard feature for most laptops yet. We bought one of the USB light strips for a couple bucks and that solved that problem. Overall, we are very happy and would recommend this laptop to friends and family.

Q: Question500GB hard drive?Specs say the machine includes a 500GB hard drive. On startup and system check I see a total of just 400GB of storage space, split between C: (program files etc - 186GB total capacity) and D: (user data storage - 254GB total capacity). What's the story?
Asked by Matt.
- A:Answer Some of the 500GB is being used by the OS (Operating System) and some is allocated for certain features of the OS, e.g., System Restore, Recycle Bin, page file, etc. Also, a 500GB hard drive out of the box actually has less than 450GB of actual storage space because of the fact hard drive marketing for the size of the drive is different from the actual usable space. This is because 1GB is actually 1024MB instead of 1000MB. So you can rest assured that there is nothing wrong with your hard drive even though the total space you have now is 400GB.

Q: Questionso many different prices for very close version which one to choose ?Hi, i have been gawking at this model for many days and after reading the very good reviews on this, am really tempted but i am unable to understand how even a i3 with very much the same specs costs 450 and this i5 is also at 450. Is i3 and i5 the same ? can anyone help me understand. Thanks.
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer i3 and i5 are very similar depending on the specific CPU model number. The similarity in price although different CPUs may be due to differences in other specs that makes up the difference.

Q: QuestionUSB 3.0?Does this laptop have any USB 3.0 ports? The specs list 3 USB 2's.
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer I saw that too and crossed my fingers. :) Not on this model. USB 2.0 only. That must be an optional upgrade on another model. It does have GigaBit Ethernet, which is not true of all value laptops.
