Performance at its best price !!Posted .
i bought this laptop about a month ago and i am totally satisfied with it !! its got all that you will need to make your friends turn green with envy and at the same time serve a gamers' need perfectly !! its similar to having an alienware but only its light on the pocket.... the system performs very well and with its turbo extreme mode it gets you a pretty good performance without making u feel the heat . although even a 9 cell battery is too little for this beast, it get most of the work done without a fuss .. audio output is excellent and the laptop doesent even lose out on functionality in terms of ports!! with 4 USB ports, its makers gave it an HDMI, an e-SATA, a FireWire port and a place to put in an antenna for radio (the antenna comes as a seperate accesory). the only thing lacking in this baby is bluetooth and good quality speakers !! Apart from these two things, this laptop is a steal deal for this price and its mind-blowing performance !! Its a must buy for all thise who want to find a balance between money and performance (without compromising much on the former)!!I would recommend this to a friend

Excellent Budget Gaming MachinePosted .I would recommend this to a friend
I've owned this laptop for a couple of weeks now, and overall it's been a great experience. What I was looking for was a competent gaming laptop that is small-as-can-be and has a full-size keyboard. With this Asus I can play all my games and do work. I even installed XP on this bad-boy thanks to the handy BIOS compatibility setting. The drivers are a bit hard to find for XP (they're not available on Asus's site) but if you search for "G50vt XP Drivers" you should be able to find some. The only compromises I've had to make are No Overclocking feature and I can't turn the LED lights off. Other than that XP grants better performance than Vista 64-bit (8500 in 3dMark06 in Vista 64 compared to 8900 in XP 32 with stock CPU speeds) and it's a familiar operating system, although the webcam images are upside down. :S This can be fixed by tweaking the images in Paint and Movie Maker, but still... it's kind of annoying. That being said, I also have the say that the Keyboard is annoying for me. I type lightly and sometimes my keystrokes won't register so I have to pay close attention to what I'm typing and adjust my speed and accuracy accordingly. I never had this much trouble on my old Acer Aspire or the Gateway FX. It's been quite the trial to get used to it. (For clarification I replaced the Gateway with this laptop because the firewire functionality was poor and I need that to do my work. There have been no issues with the Asus in this manner thus far.) Sure the display is small and the pixel count is standard but it costs $899 so what can you expect? That being said I'd like to clear some things up regarding some previous posts I've read here. In Windows Vista it will recognize the onboard GPU as an Nvidia 9800 GT. In XP it's the same story. I used GPU-Z on this Asus and it also said it was a GT. However the specs are akin to the GS, like the clock speeds and shader units count (the GS has 64 at 530MHz, the GT has 96 at 500 MHz). So it IS a 9800M GS. Also this isn't mentioned on Best Buy.com but there is a Second Hard Drive Slot. I've opened it up and seen it with my own eyes. It's there. Also, get a notebook cooler for when you play games because not only does this laptop become a heater, using a notebook cooler will also extend the life of your notebook. Hope this helps!

Blzing FAST and nice featuresPosted .I would recommend this to a friend
I'm not a fan of Vista, but have been using it on a few machines now. Usually the first thing I do is downgrade back to XP. ASUS has a good forum on downgrading and multibooting and where to get drivers so became my choice. At first I was going to get a cheaper one on newegg but they took too long to process and I cancelled and decided to just go to Best Buy. I found out about Best Buy having this from a Youtube video where someone asked if the one at Best Buy was any good. So I went to the Best Buy site and saw the specs. I already liked the hardware setup in most ASUS notebooks I had browsed, but a few things shine on this one. 1-Looks nicer than other ASUS laptops (most are fingerprint magnets and the gaming one before this was a weird orange factory machine looking thing although that is the one I was Youtubing that led me to this). 2-Centrino 2. I have seen so many posts everywhere about getting the Centrino 2 over any other processor. I remembered that much and not exactly what it does but I'm sure someone will chime in with why it's so good. Might be the reason this thing seems like it can multitask as if you aren't running other things at the same time because that's what it does. I have yet to see anything slow this down. I can install a game and browse the internet and do other things while I'm waiting and there is no lag whatsoever. It's like everything is just in RAM or something. 3-NVidia 9800M GS. There are 5 tiers, I have a laptop that is a 5 (lowest) for it's S3 video or whatever it is, one that is a 4 that has an NVidia 7000m, and I was looking at some 9650m gt setups that were at a 2. This video card is on the 1 list. I never thought I would be able to afford any of that stuff. Now I have it and it's just amazing. It has DDR3 which was listed on the Best Buy site and is usually DDR2 on sites like newegg but they don't tell you that. It's a huge difference from what I have seen in discussions and glad that I knew about it and went with this. 4-There are some extras pre installed, and a quick booting OS that you can use Skype, browse the internet, chat, etc. It is a nice thing if you need to be on battery power for an extended time. 5-64 bit Vista is nice, but some games don't work right that are older, namely Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. There is a fix, but you can't use LAN, etc. One of the reasons I will downgrade to XP. There are many other reasons Vista does not work for me because I need software that I use on the job to work and it doesn't. 6-The webcam is really good, it works in low light 7-This is sturdy and comfortable to type on and rest your palms, etc. 8-Lots of slots for cards and things, I need a lot of these and they aren't on most laptops anymore. 9-Games. I tested Mass Effect with everything cranked and it ran smooth. I also cranked up everything including VSync on Dirt, NSF Undercover, Shawn White Snowboarding, and Tomb Raider Legend. No slowdowns whatsoever. On Splinter Cell CT, I cranked everything up and am used to seeing textures load for a minute before the game can start and it took like 5 seconds. 10-Everything is FAST. You wont believe it. Nothing ever slows down, not windows popping up, running several programs at once, etc. The only thing that is slow is when you first boot up and of course while updating, installing, etc. But most things you can still run programs while waiting for the hard drive and what not to do it's thing and there's no lag at all. It's something else. This deserves more than a 4, and will be a 5 once you perform a downgrade or reverse multiboot. But if you have to deal with Vista, this is the way.

Best Laptop I have ever ownedPosted .I would recommend this to a friend
Excellent Laptop for the price! Fast with 4GB of RAM and a 512MB nvidia GeForce 9800M GS Video Card which actually winds up giving you 2GB (512 dedicated). I can run any game on it. Has an Intel 5100 AGN Wireless NIC and a RealtekRTL8168C Gigabit NIC. It will connect to a/g and Draft N wireless and 10/100/1000 wired networks. Also has nvidia and Realtek HD audio with 5 Altec Lansing speakers (2 on top above keyboard, 2 in front edge and a subwoofer on the bottom of the laptop). The Dolby Surround sound is so good I do not have to hookup external speakers or headphones to it. It actually solved my sound (too loud while I gamed at night) problem. I no longer have to sit for hours with headphones on. It has every new port you can think of. Has a built in webcam. Has 4 USB ports (1 on the left, 2 on the right and 1 on the back) and even a HDMI to attach to your HDTV. Has a 1394, ESATA and a SD Card Reader slot on the left side. Has Power, Battery Status and Wireless LED's; IR Port and a wireless on/off switch on front edge (between 2 of the 5 speakers). External VGA port on left side with Ethernet and modem ports on back edge. The OLED is nice and can be setup to show CPU %, Memory %, Battery % and incoming e-mail all at the same time. It actually scrolls the subject line and sender name across the OLED when new mail arrives! The other buttons to the right of the OLED are touch sensitive (no need to press). From left to right: Direct Console, Splashtop, Performance Config, Touchpad Disable and Power on/off Sleep/Hibernate. The Direct Console lets you overclock the CPU, set the OLED and the LED lights on the lid. It has 3 long thin lights (left and right edges and across the middle under the logo, which also glows). The LED's on the edges can be set to flash with CPU, Fan or always on. There are no separate buttons for volume, video, etc. but they are all built into the keyboard. Actually there are more functions on this laptop using the fn+ keys than any other laptop I have ever used (there is a small guide to help you and I like it). The Splashtop is nice and lets you boot into a GNU Unix/Linux desktop without having to boot Windows. In fact it will run even if Windows is "having a bad day". The OEM Vista 64 Home Premium on it runs well and has no problems so far. I do not like OEM versions as you do not get the Vista disk with the laptop (all PC Brands have this problem). I had an issue after I installed some Microsoft Updates (BSOD) and without the Vista disk I could not repair it (even with a Vista Enterprise disk I had). Fortunately Best Buy Geek Squad setup a Restore Partition on it and Asus includes the Restore DVD and all driver disks so I had it back up and running in no time. My local Best Buy also had a Windows Guru in the store that was very helpful. All in all I would highly recommend buying this laptop and am very happy I chose to get it from Best Buy. I even had a special option to get a refurb HP with my HP Certified Professional discount and chose this laptop instead. I have been using ASUS motherboards for years and even have one in a desktop that has been in continuous use since 1996! I recommend getting this full featured, reliable laptop at an amazing price at Best Buy!

Best Laptop Bestbuy Has Right Now!Posted .I would recommend this to a friend
I went to bestbuy on 2/13/09, my wife took me to surprise me. She said I could have any laptop I wanted for Valentines day (Aww..). So being an A+ Certified IT Technician I knew what I wanted and what I didn't want. The first thing I did was test the salesman on his knowledge by asking him to rate the top 3 laptops BestBuy carried. He ranked the Asus G50VT #1, followed by the Asus little brother, and a gateway that was $300 more with similar specs. I looked at all the laptops and concurred with his recommendation (Finally a computer salesman at bestbuy that knew something about computers no offense I love bestbuy). So I played with these top 3 gave them a thorough look through, went through all the system specs, bios settings, etc... I had my thumbdrive with me and ran some benchmarking tests and the ASUS G50VT outperformed on all the tests. It truly was the top performing computer they had, and for $999 you couldn't beat the price. With DDR3 memory you're getting the same speed if not better as 6GB of DDR2 so don't let that fool you. The thing I love is that almost all of the important features are upgradeable (Graphics Card, Ram, Processor, and Hard Drive) thats a great feature on a laptop that can be expensive to replace. Now that I've had this computer home for a day and ran it through the gauntlet I can honestly say I'm happy with my purchase. Anyone that purchases it and has connectivity issues, change the 802.11n adapter configuration so that its 802.11b/g only unless you have a 802.11n gateway that will fix the connectivity issue, I've emailed ASUS to let them know as well. Other than that I have zero complaints and everyone I show it to is jealous. The smallest features are my favorite. The OLED Display lets me see my IM's or emails when I'm online or playing agame which is cool. The facial recognition while geeky is sweet when you hate remembering passwords. All you do is sit down infront of the computer, the camera follows your face snaps a shot and identifies you which automatically logs you in. It only takes like 5 seconds, just as quick as typing my password. Anyone thinking about purchasing a new laptop YOU HAVE TO consider the ASUS G50VT, and for those of you who ask "Who is Asus", they make about 90% of the motherboards of the major manufacturers and used to be only special order and very expensive so don't worry about the name.

Excellent buy -- only a few minor problemsPosted .I would recommend this to a friend
I was shopping for quite a while before I finally decided to buy this Laptop. I wanted a machine for business, but also equally for games. The quality of the Graphics was key, and this Asus G50V has the best laptop graphics I could find for $200-$400 less than I could find anywhere else. I also insisted upon a Numeric Keypad, and this unit had one. I hadn't heard of Asus, but the folks at Best Buy assured me that they have had no problems or complaints with the brand. So, I purchased it, and was delighted with my purchase. Great Graphics, large fast hard drive. Some nice built-in features that I wasn't looking for, like a fast-start browser and a visual recognition logon. My game of choice, City of Heroes, runs wonderfully on this machine. The keyboard is comfortable (for a notebook), so using for business works great, too. No problems running standard business applications. The "bloat-ware" that comes pre-loaded was a lot less intrusive than on notebooks and PCs I have purchased from HP, Gateway or Toshiba. The only significant feature I wanted that this machine is lacking is built-in Bluetooth. Bluetooth capacity shows up under Vista, but it doesn't work. It looks like I will have to go out and purchase a Bluetooth adapter. Overall, this notebook computer is an OUTSTANDING VALUE, as any other computer with comparable graphics will cost at least $200 more. WARNING: As I write this, I am in the process of re-loading the initial set-up of the computer. Why? During set-up, I told Vista to load all updates. After a week of working great, suddenly all wireless connectivity stopped. Apparently, one of those updates did something that caused the wireless adapter to not work at all -- it couldn't even sense any networks and I wondered if it was broken. A few calls to Asus let me know that I needed to re-load the original set up, and then only allow IMPORTANT updates and not ALL updates. This was explained to me to be a Vista problem and not a problem with the notebook. Calling Asus was OK . . . .long wait on hold, but the folks on the line were nice enough, not outstanding but good . . . which puts Asus a bit above other brands, because my experience with Customer-no-service has generally been bad.

Great laptop with a few Vista glitches.Posted .I would recommend this to a friend
Overall It's been two weeks and everything has been very good. I replaced an old Gateway that took way to long to process and I couldn't even think about having more than two apps open at the same time. I bought this laptop for the class 1 Nvidia graphics card. My thinking was that a 512 dedicated would help when using my photo programs that I use for online selling, better movie quality and better resolution over all when playing games. Multiple Programs Open So far it has met my expectations well. No delays, picture glitches or crashes when I have Word, Excel, a few pages on the Net and Photoshop open at the same time. The net surfing experience has been smooth. Can get a little hot, not extreme but definately warm if processing hard with games or with hours of use with my web businesses. So, just get a cooling pad if you plan to using on your lap alot. If it is mainly stationary than you shouldn't have to worry. Gaming I am not a gamer, but I do like my strategies games like Empire Earth, Age of Empires, the Tycoons, etc. On my old LT the picture quality was good for about 30 mins then it started to breakup and there would be a delay on my mouse when panning through the maps. The Asus has handled all very well with NO delays on high settings. I don't play everyday, maybe three days a week for 1-3 hours at a time. I have a wireless mouse and keyboard for games and other than having to download the drivers so they would work with Vista there have been no other issues. Sound Quality Speakers are pretty good for a LT. Not the greatest, I looked at some of the Toshiba Satelite LT and they had better sound quality. But overall, I am pleased. I do wish they could be a little louder, they top off an what I would say is a medium. If you watch alot of movies and want that surround sound feeling you will need to buy external speakers. Keyboard I have small hands as I am a 5 ft tall woman, but the board is good. I can't reach the number pad without moving my whole hand, but I just use the top ones anyways. There is space and I don't feel that the board is cramped like some of the other LTs I have seen. Lights The lights don't bother me as much as other reviewers. I have noticed that when the shut down time that I set has been reached that the lights go off. They do stay on when it hibernates or gets into the energy mode, but even then when the time alloted is reached the whole thing shuts down along with the lights. I do wish the keys would light up just like the touch pad does. WiFi The WiFi reception is not as good as I would have liked. I noticed that when I start getting blocked by a partial wall or furniture and get about 14 ft away from the dock that I start having problems with low connectivity or no connectivity at all. My older pc worked fine all over the house. I don't know if it is a Vista problem since my wireless network is about five years old. Vista Vista has been ok, but not compatible with eveything. The New Windows 7 ( I think) that is coming out will be better. I did have to download some drivers so that some USB components would work properly. And some of my games get shut down all of a sudden becuase Vista is having to switch to a lower resolution. I also have had some difficulties with my McAfee allowing me into the home network. I also get a error popup ever since I loaded my new HP WiFi printer. I works just fine, but at shut down it always says there is a Vista HP error. A little annoying, but it shuts itself off anyways. I have to look into that. I think that is it. For the price the Asus is a great buy! I know that they are coming out with LTs that have 500 GB of hard drive and up 6GB of Ram. I have looked for over 3 months and this is the one for price and quality. The problem is the new LTs with more space, etc are starting at around $1200 and come with lower quality graphics cards. Unless you store alot of movies, music and pics on your HD, the 320 space on this one will be more than enough. The 4GB ram is great for processing multiple apps at the same time and most older and newer games without a glitch and the Graphics Card is pretty awesome, one of Nvidia's best...Right Now Alteast.

Excellent Updates To An Already Great Product!Posted .I would recommend this to a friend
This is my 3rd Asus laptop, and they have greatly improved. The audio is much better than before, and it has a better video card than previous models. Gaming is top notch, and I was very surprised to learn it came with a flyer with a serial number to activate 1 year of Antivirus and Antispyware from Trendmicro compliments of Best Buy, and Lojack for Laptops for 1 year also compliments of Best Buy. The trend micro may not be as up to par as my Norton Antivirus 2009 Gaming edition, and Webroot Spysweeper, and may not catch as much, but at least it is a whole year for free, so I will try and see. A year for free on all of these is great considering most pc's come with a "trial" version of antivirus software that typically lasts 15 to 30 days. So this is a big plus if you don't want to shell out more money for protection. Also, ASUS has a 2 year MFG. warranty, however, if you have the extra money I would suggest buying the Best Buy replacement plan, and I will explain why... According to Asus, and Best Buy directly, they are NOT allowed to work on ANY Asus laptop, so if anything goes wrong they will simply swap out your unit with a new one with out having the hassle of working on it. And if they no longer have it in stock, they will give you credit towards a new one of your choice. All and all I can;t believe, or see any reason why for 899 why if you are a gamer you should not buy this laptop. As for the gateway fx, the asus just has a more "custom built" look and feel to it. Almost like alienware. In conclusion I would highly recommend this product. I caled my local BB and had them hold one for me, and when I arrived I simply walked up to the customer service and they already had it sitting there for me with my name on it, all and all I was only in BB about 5 minutes max, and I even payed with cash. Very quick and curteious customer service. A+
