Bang for the Buck Gaming RigPosted .
The Asus G71GX-RX05 is one of the best bang for the buck laptops you can find. The Geforce 260M GTX is one of the best laptop graphic cards available. Although Asus downclocked the values of what they should originally be from NVidia stock, you can still get smooth gameplay in high-end games such as Crysis, Prototype, etc., although it also depends on how you overclock it (easy feature using Turbogear included), what drivers you use, and the settings of course. Most of these games can play high to very high settings. Aside from gaming, it is aesthetically pleasing enough and is not too ostentacious. The lights behind the screen never shut down completely as Asus does not provide the settings to do so. When you put it into sleep mode, they constantly flash which could be a nuisance. The glossy material of the laptop also makes it vulnerable to smudges, but if you can keep it clean it will always look great. The screen resolution is 1440x900 and maybe people prefer 1920x1200. I find 1440x900 sufficient as most games support only up to this. I hook this laptop via HDMI to my 37" Sharp Aquos and I can only use 1360x768 (TV limitation) but it still looks credible at essentially 720P which is what games are these days anyways. With lower resolution I can crank up the settings to max. If you are on a budget and want to play the latest games and are looking for a notebook, look no further than the Asus G71GX-RX05. It provides you will all you need. You can't really complain about the battery life or weight because that is the price of having a high performance notebook. Other shortcomings are bluetooth and blu-ray, but at $1200 (originally $1150), still hard to argue that it's not worth it.I would recommend this to a friend

Great first laptop!Posted .
I am probably going to be sporatic with this review, I am going to review most aspects of this laptop so please bare with random changes in the review from one thing to another. I have had this laptop for 2 months now. It runs great with very little to no problem, only when both your cores are running at 100% for a few seconds which slows down for a second and then continues running at very low percentages. As many people say it is a fingerprint magnet but that is from the material, which can be cleaned easily. The graphics card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 260m 1 gb ddr3 is very very great for this laptop, makes playing games more enjoyable with the better graphics and the looks of the games. the RAM (6 gigs) helps out a lot but I don't really understand why it is only ddr2 and not ddr3 with the graphics card, if it was ddr3 it would boost the battery life on this laptop. There are some LED's on this machine as with Alienware but for most of them you have the option to turn them off which helps saves battery life. The keyboard setup is great, it even has FULL standard which includes the calculator keys, the buttons are very quiet depending on how you type. The 4 usb ports + the headphone plugins are hidden in 2 side compartments with little magnetic doors (1 on each side) near the back. It is great only to the standpoint of the looks of the laptop. It has a beastly single 500 GB HDD partition which you can create more drives and a recovery drive if you wish to do so. The screen is great, it is built to be a tablet (which to my surprise that it is a tablet screen but didn't come with a pen [oh well]) the colors are rich and clear, you can also change the settings of course with color etc.. It comes with a small cleaning cloth so you can clean up your screen or laptop which comes in handy. The complaints or wish-it-hads: 1. Bluetooth. With this I was hoping it had bluetooth but it's not a big deal, I probably wasn't going to use it much at all. 2. BATTERY BATTERY BATTERY. This 8 cell lithium ion battery can power my laptop for 1 hour and a half (on a full charge) or so depending on (on current battery settings etc) playing games or just web surfing with this non-eco-friendly machine, it should have a much larger battery to make it last a long longer. It would make a great portable laptop if it had better battery life. 3. Wish it had DDR3 ram, ddr3 is better because it runs at lower voltage which means less power needed to run it in turn helps the battery life. The Inquisition: It is a really great laptop for the price and a very great first buy. I am pleased with my choice. The likings mostly come down to personal preference. With a generally short battery like in essence this laptop somewhat becomes a stationary PC (although i wouldn't use it outside). I would definitely recommend this laptop for a general gamer (not a hardcore gamer) and college students like myself.I would recommend this to a friend

Fantastic Gaming and highend editing laptopPosted .
With 2 1/2 yrs of owning a computer business in the past, A+ certification & approx. 20 yrs. experience with computers, I have to say that this laptop is fantastic! Rock solid performance & stability, unbelievable speed, nice display, good sound from the built in speakers, has played all games that I have thrown at it on high to maxed out settings without so much as a hiccup! If you are looking for a fast & reliable desktop replacement, look no further...you have found it! If your looking at this laptop, then portability is not an issue..It's large, like most gaming laptops. If you want something more portable then look for a 15" but if you want a serious gaming system for a reasonable price, here it is. The facial recognition security software is a very nice extra touch but doesnt do real well in low light conditions. You add multible photos so you'll have to take some in low light conditions as well. The only real con that I have found is the short battery life. Unless you're planning on carrying extra batteries or have access to a wall socket, forget about Wi-Fi'ing it for 4 hours at your local Cafe'. I estimate about one hours' worth of juice while gaming is all you will get. Longer if you're running a less intensive application or web browsing. With all the lights it has, a backlit keyboard would have been a plus, It comes with barebones software, a few extra added full licensed programs would have been nice as well. Bestbuy has a few laptops that have already been optimized for about $40 extra. This updates the computer and removes all those annoying trial programs that litter new computer hard drives. Not a big deal, but if you have an extra $40 just sitting in your wallet not doing anything, why not let them do it! The case, while sleek in design and looks sharp, fingerprints very easily, but this shouldn't steer you away from this excellent system. I really can't say enough good things about this laptop! I'm much, much happier with this computer than I was with my last one (Dell XPS). So before you grab up that HP, Dell or Sony, check out this one...You won't be dissapointed!I would recommend this to a friend

Best bang for your buckPosted .
Juice50 mentioned in their review that this laptop has bluetooth, it doesnt. The wireless console may give you an option to turn on/off bluetooth, however that doesnt mean theres an actual bluetooth radio in it, its used if you install a USB/ExpressCard bt radio. I doublechecked the device manager and im 100% sure there is no bluetooth. The size point, go to bb and see it in person, its a big machine, but then you wouldnt buy it if thats not what you want. Its a desktop replacement/gaming laptop. It is bigger than a lot of 17 inch laptops though, ive compared it to several HP 17's and its width and length are a bit larger. As for the BIOS issue, thats a moot point, as far as i know BB has been selling them with the 1201 (fixed) version, so theres no need to update it. I recommend upgrading to windows 7 when possible. Currently running the RC and i enjoy it thoroughly. However if you are a gamer, and you play any games that require punkbuster, be advised upgrading to windows 7 will most likely break punkbuster and you would be able to stay connected to any servers.I would recommend this to a friend

It's a great laptop!!!Posted .
Ok to start with, this is a great computer and believe everything you read in other reviews. Even if it says that shipping might take up 3 weeks (1-2 weeks actually ship out + about a 1 week to get it = worst case scenario). Anyway I ordered mine on Thursday and got it on Wednesday next week so it took only 6 days and I'm talking about regular shipping no extras no pick up at the store. Pros: Let's look at the bright side a little more deep. All the specs are great and I don't really agree how everyone says that laptop is huge - it's not. The one I had before was HP zd8000 (4 years old laptop now days) and it's about the same size. It's not even loud (you should hear my zd8000 that was like sitting next to a generator) I can't even hear this one lol. Live update is great once you boot up it will (after a little while) pop up and ask you to update BIOS (recommended so you don't have any overheating issues :) Lights are great, but not so great lol. You can turn off almost every light, except logo republic of gamers and the bar right below it. Every other light can be turned off by little icon (down right corner - more viz other review below me :)). Keyboard is well build and so as the computer I was very pleased with that and I tell you why lol. Before this one I ordered P-FX7805u gateway and it was very bad: volume on the board didn't work, screen was faded away and after 10 days of using it just died... so no more gateway it's a piece of ****! Like a little bonus here you have also free windows 7, which is awesome, because Vista totaly sux and I'm getting rid of it asap (even win98 beats it lol). Quickly also want to mention that it's nicely shaped and your hands won't hurt after some time (nicely rounded corners). Cons: I know I'm a little pushy but hey screen could do a little progress (I'm happy anyway). I'd also say that even my old HP zd8000 had way better screen (so as FX7805u gateway) than this asus, but life is though and you can't have everything so you have to choose your priorities right? Let me say it stright: it's good, but could do way better. Another thing is there are so many lights on this computer that it's not even funny. But the one most appreciated would definitely be lit up keyboard light right, well guess what... ein't gonna get it, deal with it. Just a cherry on the top of the cake is 1k Mbps Ethernet, come on Asus you could definitely do this one, I doubt it's that expensive and would made such a price difference. Another little con would be number of junk you get, but if you're planing go with fresh format C: and reinstall than you won't have a problem. No worries, Windows Vista 64 (I'm about to throw up) and driver dvd are included so you can reinstall anytime. Ok last thing to mention is a fingerprint issue, but that's a tax you have to pay for fine look so no more fussing about that. Overall: great deal, I got mine when price was 1150,- now it went way up to 1299,- so that might make you sit down and rethink, but I can only recommend it, so far it's an unbelievable hell of a deal laptop! My advice: GO FOR IT because it is soooooooooo worth it!I would recommend this to a friend

Best Laptop for the MoneyPosted .
Assuming you are in the market for a gaming laptop that is actually affordable, than this is definatlely the right choice for you! The big things to consider is that it has a great hard drive (500GB) a ton of RAM (6GB), one of the best mobile graphics cards (nVidia 260m GTX), and all for only 1300? Try finding something with this much to offer from any other manufacturer besides Asus! Besides running smoothly and actually being fairly quietly, this laptop has some stylish looks. It has the shiniest black body ever, and the amount of blue LED lights will be enough to make you consider putting this thing on your Christmas tree. Some of the LEDs can be turned off or change colors while others cannot be modified at all, but all-in-all the effect is very "gaming-laptop" oriented. Other people have said the computer has bad bass when playing those deep sounds either in games or music... This is actually true, HORRIBLE bass. Its not that the laptop just lacks bass, but that those deeper sounds distort the whole speaker system, making some music sound like a scraping car being driven on its rotors while your pregnant girlfriend in the passenger seat is screaming at you to stop for cops chasing you down. However, if you listen to your music in a player like iTunes or Windows Media Player, you can use the built in equalizer to tone down the bass and get rid of the distortion, then the music and/or sound effect sound just fine on the speakers. Obviously, the battery life is horrible. The battery acts more like a fail-safe if the computer should ever get unplugged. While gaming, don't expect to get enough battery to get from one save point to another. Also, the brick-adapter is huge in size, and weight... You could easily keep it in your car for defense against a hijacking. Others have said the material this laptop is built in smudges easily... and heck yea it does. Every tiny bit of your greasy, oily skin that touches the surface of the laptop will leave a smudgy residue. However, when the material is clean, it is quite pretty indeed and will lead to much attention from interested onlookers. To get technical, here are the results of my gaming adventures. I find that if you just turn down the AA (anti-aliasing) to either 2x or off, you can pretty much run any game perfectly. COD4: all settings on max, smooth as butter Assassins Creed: all settings on max, very smooth Left 4 Dead: all settings maxed out, super smooth Devil May Cry 4: all settings maxed out, smooth as butter Far Cry 2: all settings maxed out, very smooth Crysis: all settings on max except shaders, runs smooth. With shaders on max, game runs too slow to play Bottom Line: if you have a lot more money to spend than 1300 you can probably find a better laptop, but this laptop IS the best deal right now. I still would've liked to have seen a back lit keyboard on here, or maybe some macro keys or something, but that cannot take away from the fact that this is a great buy, and that you should be ordering it right now before it sells out for good!I would recommend this to a friend

Beast of a laptop for a great price!!!Posted .
I did alot of shopping around before purchasing my new laptop. For the price, this machine cannot be beat. The closest competitors in specs from other brands such as Alienware will run you $2000+. This value is unbeatable. The performance of this laptop follows suit. I can play Lef4Dead with settings completely maxed out with no lag or problems. The hard drive is plenty spacious, plus you have an open bay to add another in if you need. The processor and 6 gigs of RAM make the applications run smooth, even with several going at once. Display is nice and the looks are killer. My only complaints with this laptop are that the clear plastic material fingerprints like crazy. You'll either be cleaning it regularly or living with a smudged machine. Most lights can be controlled, with the exception of the Republic of Gamers logo and bar in the middle of the lid. They are always on. Battery life and portability are to be expected from a high powered gaming laptop. Update the BIOS as soon as you fire this bad boy up if you plan on gaming. The integrated update software makes this the most painless BIOS update I have ever done. If you are on the fence about this one, go buy it now. You will not regret it.I would recommend this to a friend

Gaming laptop?Posted .
First the good. Its got 6 gb of ram which is probably more than you'll need. 500 gb hard drive with room to add a second drive. Nice bright 17 inch screen with a top of the line video card, nvidia geforce gtx 260m w/1 gb ram. Weight isn't too bad considering what it is. Free upgrade to Windows 7 when it is released. Price. Now the bad. Video card locks up when playing games after about 20 minutes after it reaches a certain temp. Hopefully Asus is working on a fix for this. No bluetooth. No manuals or anything to tell you what the butttons above the keyboard are for, I am still trying to figure out what some of the buttons do.No volume control, you have to hit fn f11 or fn f12 to adjust the volume up or down. Would it have killed them to put a volume knob on it? There are 2 little flip down doors covering the usb ports, headphone and mic jacks. These I have no doubt are going to break off in no time. Why they put these on I don't know. Absolutely useless, especially if you have something plugged into a usb port all the time like a bluetooth dongle. Other than these problems, it is a beautiful laptop. Still debating on returning it though due to the video card lockup problem.I would recommend this to a friend
