This is from my review of the August HomeKit lock: We ordered two HomeKit versions of the locks, the camera/doorbell and the keypad. 1. The lock itself is HUGE. Not very attractive even if the finish matches other hardware. It operates smoothly and unlocks as it should when you're nearby. Still the knob was too large for my wife's hand. You must have a deadbolt installed as the August lock is a retrofit only including the rear part of the lock. 2. Each lock requires its own August Connect to act as the gateway between the Bluetooth and wireless connections. Each Connect must be within 20 feet of the lock which isn't always easy as there may not be electricity in the entryway. The Connect is required if you want to view or control the state of the lock remotely. 3. The Keypad is simple and does its job as expected. 4. The camera/doorbell is a total mess. Setup is easy but it goes offline frequently; sometimes it will come back online but more often than not, it will just stay offline. There was a "secret" way to reset the camera in the iOS software but, apparently, it no longer works after an update. This is a problem because if the camera is offline, you have to remove it from the wall which means having to remove the security screw; not an easy task. Then, you have to push the reset button and reverse the process. Picture is clear and the voice is easy to understand on both ends. It does include a wedge for doorbells close to the door. 5. In addition to the fact that you can't reset the doorbell in the iOS software, you can't do a lot because there is NO documentation. You would think that shipping their locks for a couple of years, they would have some documentation even online. The only support is the FAQ and installation video for each product. There's a lot to be customized but just try figuring out how to get there. Beyond that, contact support. 6. Support is decent. Submit a ticket and you're promised you'll be contacted by the next day. Each time, I waited 24 hours and then called them directly because I hadn't heard from anyone. The only phone number access will be sent to you in a receipt for your support ticket. I have given up on August as a viable solution after waiting for months for a promised delivery. It was a waste of time and I replaced the August system with a Kwikset Kēvo which had an easier setup. One has to buy a Bluetooth Gateway but one is sufficient for multiple locks. It doesn't have a keypad but two real keys, two e-Keys (additional e-Keys are $0.99) and a key fob. In addition, I installed a Ring Pro and Ring Cameras. All-in-all, a much easier installation and they work flawlessly. In addition, the Ring and Kēvo work together so I can unlock the door from the Ring app.

When I saw that these keypads were available, I was delighted. You see, I enjoy going for runs and I don't generally bring along my phone or keys. Pros: - The keypad works. That's to say, it will reliably lock and unlock the August device. - It allows you to lock the door by simply pressing a single button, which is super convenient when leaving the house. - It lights up when inputting a code, so it's easy to use at night. Cons: - Unfortunately short battery life. Their website claims you can get three months of battery life from a set of AAA batteries, but I've only been able to get 2.5 weeks on a set of alkalines, 5 weeks on a set of lithium batteries and 3 days on a set of Eneloop rechargeable batteries. This is with power saver mode on and during the warmer months of the year. I fear that battery life will suffer significantly when it gets colder out. Even worse, you will receive no warning email or notification that your batteries are low in the keypad. It will simply not function one morning. - While you can easily customize access parameters (times and days) of users of the app, you cannot do the same for those who are given a keypad code. Keypad code holders either have access all the time or they don't have it at all, which seems like an unusual feature to omit. - Users in the app can view and change other users' keypad codes. I can see other household members' codes and they can see mine. This makes the log of who is coming and going potentially unreliable. Honestly, the keypad seems like a beta product. The software seems unfinished and the battery life issue makes this product difficult to recommend at a whopping $80. If you really want a keypad to work with your August lock, this is your one and only option. However, if you're on the fence about it I'd pass.

The August Smart Keypad is fantastic! The simple ability to assign personalized codes to different people is a genius idea. It takes away them having to have the app or any idea of what's going on inside the door. It's better than giving people a house key cause there's no chance of them losing it. Obviously the August Lock itself make this possible, but the addition of the Keypad let's me expand how I can let people come to my place. For people coming in from out of town and me not being home, I don't have to let them in! I just set up a code of their choosing for them and they get access. The setup was physically easy. I didn't want to have to drill into the doorframe so the adhesive backing was perfect for me. Literally just stuck it on the frame with zero mess. I recommend people to take the backing off and take the pull tabs out of the batteries before fixing it to the wall. I fixed it to the wall and then saw the battery part. It easily came off the wall for me to get to the batteries, so there was no issue with that. Once set up with my Smart Lock I started to make codes for myself and roommates. All very simple and easy to follow instructions. Overall love the product! The design from taking it out of the box to how it looks on the wall is beautiful. Easily integrated with my already in use Smart Lock and definitely worth it for the sharing of door access ability. Another winner for August!

I would prefer that this have indicated lock and unlock buttons, vs the single "unlock" button at the bottom that has no indication on it that is what it is. It is very easy to hit the wrong buttons by accident. And if you do that you have to wait about 30 seconds for the unit to "clear" and the backlight to go out to try again. This is a bit unacceptable and a programming "fail" in my opinion. You should be able to start the button sequence over immediately upon hitting the single button on the bottom. A positive is that the unit will allow you to enter 4-digit numbers even though it comes factory programmed for 5-digit number. The time-lag between pushing the correct number sequence to the lock actually unlocking is between 2 and 10 seconds, which makes a person think they are doing something wrong. And I have this button installed 18" from the lock and there is a glass panel between. Lucky this was the case, because the Bluetooth range appears to be very limited. I am going to keep this, since I do not have a lot of other options to work with my August deadbolt lock, but would advise anyone considering to be aware it does not work as well as it should.

This product is super easy to install. I completed the install within 10 minutes (with programming.) Two major issues with it, however. First, the backlight is dim and the registering of a key punch is hit or miss. This translates to an average number of attempts until the door locks or unlocks to about 2-3. This is frustrating. Secondly, the battery life seems very poor. It could have been old batteries mine came with, but I only got about two months of use before they were dead. Additionally, I probably average once a week actually using it so very disappointing. At 80 dollars, it’s not exactly a steal, but if you could find it for 40 or so, it’s a very nice add-on.

I recently added on the Smart Keypad to my August (1st gen) lock and am glad I did so. It is a simple design and is well made. One feature that isn't really mentioned on the August website was that you can trigger the lock to lock by pressing the August icon on the bottom of the keypad. This is very convenient when leaving the house quickly. I have used the emergency code multiple times now in a pinch and it has worked flawlessly. The iOS app is a work in progress, but I am not going to ding the product for that. August has been great to update the app in regular intervals so I am sure it will improve. Definitely worth it if you have a use for it.

      Great addition to August lock

We live in a highrise apartment building with our four children and there is continual coming and going. All the people who use the front door have the August lock app installed, so you may wonder why we would want the keypad. We got it mainly because we want to use the autolock feature of the smartlock and that might leave the kids locked out if they forget their phones. But it’s been much more useful than that. Our door is always locked, so the keypad is an awesome backup for quick phoneless entry. We also now realize that some of our kids (and guests) prefer to use the keypad over their phones. Each person has their own access code, which is great for keeping track of who is using the lock and when. And, it works incredibly well, flawlessly. The door unlocks immediately when the numbers are keyed in.

My wife and I love our August lock but wanted something handy to unlock the door without the phone. This keypad connects easily and works flawlessly every time. My only complaint (and the reason for 4 stars) is that it goes through batteries faster than expected. We also have had issues with corrosion but I’m chalking that up to cheap batteries. The August system provides peace of mind by allowing us to verify that the door is locked either at bedtime or after we have left the house. The other great feature is Amazon Alexa integration. We just ask Alexa to lock the front door and a few seconds later it’s done (as a security feature, Alexa can not unlock August).
