    Amy's Dark and Beautiful Masterpiece

It's crazy and still hard to believe such a young LEGEND is gone. But, is she. Amy bestowed two CLASSIC gifts to the music world and fans within those recordings ('FRANK' [her 2003 debut] and 'Back to Black' [2006]) so she exists in her music. Back to Black plays like a diary left open for anyone to devour. It showcases how one woman's truth (in one of the darkest periods in her young life) could enthrall, captivate and even console those who could find themselves mirrored, or consumed in its eleven tracks. From jump Amy sets the emotional and unflinching rollercoaster ride off with the bold album opener "Rehab". Not only was "Rehab" one the album's most mammoth singles, it was also one of the most autobiographical (depicting her battle with substance abuse). The honesty in that track alone, is what made Back to Black so undeniable and strong. It was there deep in the sultry, rasp and growl of her voice all the way to the blood bled into each direct lyric. But "Rehab" really isn't the heart pumping blood to the album, the heart is found in the title track. It delivers one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful songs in recent years. Its difficult to not feel one's self slipping into it's dark magic especially when she hits the refrain towards the end tenderly sings "black.../black.../black.../I go back to/I go back to". The way she alternates between singing gently and fiercely is what made the voice of not only that track, but, the entire body of work so solid. But even with such powerful singles like "Rehab" and "Back to Black", there's no mistaking that they are only a mere piece of what makes the LP a master. The deeper cuts on Back to Black are what give the album breath. "Me and Mr. Jones" (showcases Amy's sense of humor), "Just Friends" (describes her need for companionship absent of romance) and "Some Unholy War" (boasts her damning yet inspiring level of commitment). Each song is like its own little movie within one BIGGER and cohesive movie. It sonically draws inspiration from the Motown era and the jazz legends of music history yet somehow sounds current. This is why the album will FOREVER sound fresh and garner more admirers of its haunting, poetic beauty. So, stop reading this and just go listen to it! I promise you will see exactly what I mean.

For as much as you hear about Amy Winehoue on the entertainment news have you really ever heard one of her songs? Sure we have all heard bits and clips of "Rehab" but have you ever heard one of her songs on the radio. I know I haven't so when my friend started to rave about her I looked up some of her songs online and loved them. A couple weeks later I went online to Best Buy and bought her CD. My favorite songs include "Back to Black" and "You Know I am No Good". There are some slow songs in there and I am not a fan of slow songs in general. If you have never heard one of Winehouse's songs before listen to a couple before you judge. Apperances aren't everything.

Amy Winehouse is a great new artist. Her voice is raw, beautiful, and deep at the same time. She has made an album that deserves to be admired. The songwriting is great. One thing I can say is that her singles are the songs on the album that sound the most modern. The rest of the album is very different. This album is definitely something different and a great representation of emotion. I would definitely recommend it, but first listen to a couple of songs before you buy it. It's a very mature sound.

What can I say about this record that hasn't already been said? She nails it. Unique, retro, soulful, sexy, all of these things and more. I absolutely love her doowop style stuff. I prefer it to the straight jazzy r & b songs but I have to say she's so good, you can just leave the record on, kick back and get ready to be transported. My personal favorite ifs Wake Up Alone. This woman was a gem. It's a shame she passed away. What an awful waste of a monumental talent.

I personally love Ms. Winehouse; she may have a troubled life and you can defintaly hear that in her songs through her lyrics; she brings a lot of emotion in to each song. Amy is a throw back to Mo-town and 50's singers and she is just phenomenal. Amy is one of the best singers out there right now, she's unlike anyone else which her style and I hope to hear more from her soon.

This CD is an iconic collection of songs that have a 50's vibe. Amy Winehouse's voice is the perfect accompaniment to this style of music. Every song tells a story and are so good that before you know it, you are listening to the last song on the CD. It is a shame she has passed on, but she left this gem with us.

The cruel truth about Amy Winehouse's breakthrough masterpiece "Back to Black" is her terribly premature death renders its songs a darker and deeply sadder resonance. While she may have not been as strong, her album certainly remains so and even better than it did a decade ago. Worth every penny.
