Selecting a Range Hood

While designed to fulfill a simple purpose, a range hood is often one of the most visible parts of your kitchen. Some call them a vent a hood, others know them as stove hoods or oven hoods. However you refer to it, this one piece can say a lot about your sense of decorating style as well as the importance you place on cooking. You'll want to find a range hood that fits the character of your home and that meets the exhaust needs of the way you use your range. No matter the size of your kitchen, or the skill at which you cook, Best Buy has a variety of range hoods to meet both your culinary and budget needs.

Range Hood Considerations

First and foremost, you'll need a range hood that's designed for the exhaust opening in your kitchen. Some range hoods are made for wall mounting or under a cabinet, while others are made to stand alone as an island range hood.

Next, think carefully about the maximum air flow you'll need from your range hood. Range hoods with an air flow below 300 cubic feet per minute, or CFM, are sufficient for most home cooking on a moderately sized electric cooktop, which produce less heat. Gas ranges generally require range hoods with at least 300 CFM of airflow. If you have a high-output range and you often find yourself cooking on all burners, you're going to need a range hood that pumps out 600 to 700 or more cubic feet per minute.

Finally, think about finish and features. Depending on the other appliances in your kitchen, you'll be deciding between silver, white, black and stainless range hoods. Beyond that, ask yourself whether you want things like integrated lights, a removable grease filter, variable ducting, a temperature sensor, delayed shutoff or remote control on your range hood.
