Excellent Star Trek Blu-ray Gift Set
Posted .Hardcore sci fi geeks were nonplused when Paramount Pictures assigned prolific hyphenate J. J. Abrams the task of rebooting the 40-year-old STAR TREK franchise. Although the casting of Leonard Nimoy to play Spock Prime assuaged initial fears, fans had a right to be dubious. After all, the previous administrator of the studio's tent pole had run it into the ground with formulaic storytelling, too often focusing on the dreaded "space anomaly of the week." As the studio released trailers, Abrams clearly accomplished a task no one else had done in years: he made young people excited about STAR TREK. Moreover after the film's release it became clear that Abrams and his collaborators managed to honor Gene Roddenberry's vision--and the canon of the 700+ previous installments--while allowing it to progress in new, exciting directions. The cast is superb, especially Karl Urban who eerily channels DeForest Kelley in his performance as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy. This may not be your father's STAR TREK, but it's a worthy successor. The high-definition video transfer is breathtaking, and the Dolby Digital mix is superb. Best Buy's limited edition gift set includes four replica Starfleet division badges, which QMx reproduced from the originals used in the film.

A Bold New Trek
Posted .This Star Trek Blu-ray Gift Set had all of the extras included for the deluxe set with the added bonus of the exclusive to Best Buy Star Trek Movie Insignias (one for each department, Command, Science, Medical & oddly enough in an homage to the Original Series, the 4th Insignia is for Nursing.) The Blu-ray transfer looks as fresh & clean as the film was at the theater. The sound comes through our 5.1 surround sound system in a very crisp and clear fashion. JJ Abrams worked hard to communicate the vastness of space & the immense size of the Narada versus the Federation ships. The introduction of the USS Enterprise in this movie reminded me of the classic long tease reveal of the Big E in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The extras include just about everything you would want to see as a fan including the deleted scenes involving the Klingons. The commentary by JJ Abrams & company often took off on a tangent (lots of ADHD) but they rescued themselves with some fascinating insights & detailed reasons on the choices both made and not made. This is one of the rare films I could watch every day and not get tired of the repeated viewings.

Ultimate Star Trek Blu-Ray w/ fun collectables
Posted .J.J. Abrams does an incredible job bringing the Star Trek franchise back to life. This new movie, whether you want to call is a reboot (remake), a sequel or a prequel, bring Star Trek to a new generation in a bold and exciting way while still capturing the essence of what Star Trek movies have been for over 30 years. The new cast does a great job of honoring as well as reinventing the original crew of the Enterprise from the 60's TV show and the action heavy style helps bring in new fans for future Star Trek films. The special effects really come alive on this Blu-Ray, whether it's the newly designed Enterprise or just the transporter sequence. I've watched this movie with fellow Trekkies/Trekkers as well as some who have never even watched a single movie or episode but EVERYONE has truly enjoyed this movie and can't wait for the next one. A couple fun cameos, which I will not name just in case you don't know, really bring in a couple laughs for all and some fun memories for true Star Trek fans.

Star Trek Blu Ray Gift Set
Posted .I am the idiot they target with these things. I simply bought this for the Pins. I am a sci fi, robot, pop culture collector, and I love Star Trek to begin with and planned on getting the movie anyway. I bought my first copy from Amazon who offered a metal replica of the Enterprise. I then saw this one. So even though I already bought the movie, I got it again for the pins. I also bought a THIRD copy because they offered a replica of the Enterprise that holds the disc. So I can vouch for the fact that special marketing like this does sell merchandise. The movie is great...an excellent reboot of a classic franchise. They did the same with Lost in Space but with really bad results. Great actors playing great characters, in a great franchise, what more can you ask. Keep a special eye on Karl Urban who plays Dr. McCoy. I never thought anyone can play McCoy as good as DeForest Kelly, but Karl Urban comes pretty darn close. So if you like goodies with your movie purchases, this is it. Have fun.

Great package for collectors
Posted .The movie is a great way to reintroduce the characters and the overall plot line to a new generation. The acting was perfect, the casting was perfect, and the story was exceptional. The extras on the dvd set are a great compliment to the movie. You really get to see the fun the cast had making this movie and how they achieved a phenominal new iteration of the Star Trek universe. This particular packageing was a great draw as the divison badges of the enterprise crew are the icon most people associate with Star Trek. To have a set included with the dvd was a great way to enjoy the experience of Star Trek.

Great movie!!
Posted .I felt this movie was appealing to non-trek fans as well as Trek fans. Just overall a great action movie, and you don't need to know the characters ahead of time. Also, the actors were spot-on. They seemed to stay very true to the characters without "mimmicking". The special effects and storyline were awesome. As a Trek fan and kowing the Star Trek history as I do, I was a little disappointed with a couple of minor timeline issues, but it was not enough to damper the movie at all. This is not a rent, this is a strong buy now!!

Good movie, poor extras
Posted .The movie of course rocks. Don't even need to go there. Star Trek franchise rescued and reborn. But the "extras" with the set left me cold. The badges are great-- heavy metal with clothing pins. No cheap plastic knock-offs here. Would have liked to seen a display case of some sort-- even a cheap plastic one. ; ) However, the "extras" in the set are greatly lacking. The so-called "digital copy" is poor quality and restricted by Paramount to ONE installation (so forget putting it on your desktop and laptop). This is a case of worst abuse of digital protection and IMO, is an abuse of the concept. The "extras" disc came up short both in content and quality. One would think with a Blu-Ray disc they could cram a whole lot more on 25 gigs. I'm sure there was no shortage of fan-interest information in the development of the movie... so I'd have to call that "rushing it to the market". They could have done lots better. In the end game, I found myself wishing I'd bought the DVD version so I could play it on my laptop if I took a notion. The Blu-Ray edition of course is excellent quality, no issues there. But Paramount's extreme restriction of a poor-quality "digital copy" is a customer-unfriendly policy that does nothing to promote good will or additional purchases of "digital copy" media.

A most excellent Star Trek Chronicle.
Posted .JJ Abrams is becoming his generation's Steven Spielberg and this Star Trek movie is as great as anything he has done so far. This big budget treatment did an outstanding job of casting young actors that accurately represent the stars of the original Star Trek of the 1960s. Its a tough, gritty movie that has a couple of laughs and the picture and sound are state of the art. This is a great movie and hopefully Abrams will make several more.
