Synopsis

Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Bedknobs and Broomsticks was produced several years after Walt Disney's death and released in the fall of 1971. As it turned out, Bedknobs was frequently compared to Mary Poppins -- probably thanks to several striking similarities between the two productions, notably the presence in the cast of David Tomlinson, the use of Cockney children as central characters, and the inclusion of sequences that combine animation and live-action. Set in wartime England, Bedknobs stars Angela Lansbury as Eglantine Price, a would-be witch who hopes to use her newly acquired conjuring powers to forestall a Nazi invasion. Saddled with three surly kids who've been evacuated from London, Lansbury wins over her charges by performing various and sundry feats of magic. And, yes, she manages to foil a few Germans along the way. The film's most famous episode is an elaborate undersea fantasy, which combines animation with live-action on a gargantuan scale, dwarfing all previous Disney sequences along these lines. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Growing up, this was a favorite movie of mine. What I liked about it was the story it told, of Ms. Eglantine Price (Angela Lansbury), an apprentice witch taking up three children as residents during World War II. The children discover her flying on the broomstick, and a bedknob is enchanted, for travel. They meet Prof. Browne, and go on a journey to learn the spell of Substitutiary Locomotion, involving a trip to Portabello Road (think a vintage flea market), and to the animated Isle of Naboombu, with a soccer game using primarily recycled animation. When the German army decides to do a practice Run, Ms. Price uses the spell of Subtitutiary Locomotion to bring Medieval Armor to life, and scare the Germans away! My one qualm with this is that this isn't the same as the 2009 Extended Edition, but as the bookman once said, "I don't mind saying, to see it together at last, there isn't much I wouldn't do."

This movie is a witchier version of Mary Poppins basically, except for the fact that Mary Poppins' bag was pretty witchy, amirite?? For awhile, I kept calling this movie 'Doorknobs and Cheesesticks' only to be corrected everytime. Which is surprising because barely anyone has even heard of this movie. I only heard of it because it popped up when I was looking for Mary Poppins, and of course I was curious so I looked around. I really bought it because I watched the small movie clip that Best Buy had on the site, and in the clip, the youngest child in it had such horrible speech that I needed to know what he was saying. It's a good movie!

This is such a classic. My sister, brother, and myself grew up watching this Disney classic over and over. It is a great story with a beautiful mix of live action and animation mix. The actors are good in it as well. I have since added it to our home movie collection to share with my oldest daughter who is 8 she watches it over and over again as well, she loves it. I have two younger daughters as well who I know will like it so I know the DVD will more than pay for itself. I highly reccomend buying this movie and having family movie night.

I have loved this movie since I was a child. I was so thrilled to own this movie once more. I had watched this movie several times when I was young, and thought I knew all the scenes, but this version really brought out some extras that made it fun for me to watch all over again! It felt like I was watching the movie for the first time. This is a movie for those with a love of fantasy and imagination. It is a musical style movie - so you have to love characters breaking out into song as well. I love it.

I had fond memories of this movie, so I bought it to watch with my daughter. It is waaaay longer than I remember, with many of the musical scenes lasting longer than they should. That, coupled with some moments where actors were painted to look darker (the international dance scene) make for some cringe-worthy moments. Still, it has its fun parts and my daughter enjoyed the animated bits.

I used to watch Bedknobs and Broomsticks with my mom as a kid. Some of my fondest memories are spending time with her while watching this film. I bought this product so that she and I could watch it together again. The work done on the remaster is amazing. The clarity of the picture and the sound made it seem almost like we were watching a new movie. I cannot recommend this movie enough.

I bought this one and another classic that I grew up watching to share with my kids and they did a good job cleaning this one up. The DVD is still not that great of quality but the price was right. The sound was a little soft compared to other DVDs but can't really say if it was out TV/sound system or the DVD sound quality.

I remember watching this movie growing up as a child. I jumped on the movie when it came out in BluRay without seeing if it was just nostalgia or was it a good movie. I still remembered all the songs and had a blast watching it with my kids. They thought it was great, I thought it was good. Definitely a family friendly movie that reminds me of the good days growing up!
