Romance ignites between a troubled young singer on the cusp of stardom, and a handsome young cop with political ambitions in this drama about the power of walking your own path. A glimpse beneath the surface, however, reveals a girl who's cracking under the pressure to top the charts. When Noni tries to end it all, concerned cop Kaz Nicol (Nate Parker) pulls her back from the ledge, and shows her that life is still worth living. Along the way, Noni and Kaz fall head over heels in love. Meanwhile, the powers that be conspire to keep them apart as well as focused on their respective careers. When we first meet Noni, she’s a lost soul, drowning in her own ocean of over-sexualized hype. She’s just won her first Billboard award, she’s dating Kid Culprit, and seemingly has everything she’s ever wanted. That’s when she decides to leap off her hotel balcony. Don’t worry, she never makes it to the ground: the police officer assigned to her hotel room grabs her as she falls. She wants to let go, but the officer, Kaz, played by Parker, looks her in the eyes and says, “I see you.” Noni allows him to pull her to safety. The rumors start to fly that Noni tried to throw herself off the balcony. Macy buys Kaz’s uneasy silence with a $10,000 check, and at a press conference they tell the world Noni was drunk and slipped. Noni is drawn to Kaz and it soon becomes clear why. He’s an intelligent, confident, no BS, quietly ambitious dude who hopes to affect change by running for office. These two, of course, fall for each other, but there are plenty of obstacles standing in the way of their finding happiness together. I love the job writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood does here, sure-handedly presenting a story that unfolds like that moment up on that balcony, with Noni ready let go as Kaz struggles to save her. She keeps the cameras close and the dialogue economical, finding the truth in her actors’ eyes. It helps that in Mbatha-Raw, Parker and Driver, she has three actors who excel at delivering truth. Had Beyond the Lights been much less predictable and allowed the protagonist to be even more independent when finding her truth, it would’ve been a truly special movie, with something a little more important to say. That said, it’s still a solid and entertaining film that tugs at the heart.

Purchased this dvd in blue ray as I have a blue ray disc player. When I put in to play, it played the previews but the movie itself would not play stating something wrong. I then attempted to play on an older dvd player which is not a blue ray player and got the same result. I have a samsung player and called samsung for support and they informed me that there was something wrong with this disc as it was not made in the US. Sadly, I had to return. The good thing is that Best Buy did allow exchange for a regular dvd of this movie and it played fine. I am thankful for Best Buy allowing the exchange. Be careful of this BLUE RAY version.

Based on the premise I expected this to be a Lifetime-worthy showbiz drama. What I got, however, was surprising and it became one of my favorite films of the year. Though the territory covered is hardly original, thanks to the graceful direction, careful pacing, and uniformly excellent performances, we get one of the best portraits of what it's like to want to make art in a world that only values commerce. It's simply amazing

The acting is GREAT!!! I really like the young lady who played the main character. I've seen her in a few movies and it's always great to see a fresh face on the screen. Her love interest is a good actor in his own right as well. I'm glad that they went with other actors for this film. I get tired of seeing the same actors over and over again.

I didn't know what to expect of this movie, since I cou remember the highlights from when it was in the theatre. I was very impressed and really like the challenge of trying to be something for someone but making the change of life for yourself. But to know humans can change remember the good, be able to apologize and move forward

I love the dvd and am quite happy with it. I didn't like though how they switched my purchase to another store without telling me that prior. I'm expecting to pick up from 23 then had to go all the 44 street store. Paid a difference in taxes too. While I love Beyond The Lights pick up in store shouldn't be a headache.

This is one of my daughters favorite movies. So I bought it for her. I noticed that the quality of this bluray was better than watching it on Netflix. It's the story of a young singer who falls in love. If you like that sort of thing then you'll enjoy it.

Well acted movie with a good story line. Although this movie was low budget and had little advertisement, it was surprisingly good and really holds your attention. I would rate this movie as one of the best sleepers of the year so far. Watch it once and you will be hooked.
