Synopsis

Blackfish
In 2010, Dawn Brancheau, a veteran trainer at the well-known Orlando, FL, water park Sea World, lost her life when she was attacked by Tilikum, a bull orca (or "killer whale") weighing 10,000 pounds who was a regular attraction at the park. What made the incident all the more disturbing was this was not the first time Tilikum had turned on one of his trainers, and that the orca had also caused the death of a trainer in 1991 before he was purchased by Sea World. While orcas will sometimes attack humans in captivity, such incidents are extremely rare in the wild, leading some scientists to question the wisdom of keeping large, intelligent, and sometimes territorial creatures in captivity and expecting them to perform on a regular basis. Filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite began researching the lives of orcas in captivity after the death of Dawn Brancheau, and in the documentary Blackfish, she offers a powerful and provocative look at a remarkable breed of animals that humans still don't fully understand, and how the financial interests of water parks and resorts may run counter to the best interests of the animals they put on display. Taking its title from a Native American name for orcas, Blackfish received its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I bought this as a blind buy because of the buzz that it had received. I was completely blown away by this film. I can't remember the last time I was truly gripped by a documentary. The film maker remains very objective and does not sway the documentary one way or another (even inviting SeaWorld to be part of it. They refused). I would recommend this documentary to anyone with the exception of small children.

This movie opened my eyes to the animal cruelty going on at SeaWorld. It was also very well researched and well filmed. Would highly recommend if you're someone who would like to learn more about these beautiful creatures and the horrible business model that is SeaWorld.

Great movie. It was very interesting to learn how these animals work. It was definitely a jaw dropping documentary. I was interested all the way through which is huge for me because I always get distracted during movies and play with my phone or laptop. It is definitely a good documentary and worth buying!

Great documentary about a tragic situation of mammals in the aquatic parks known worldwide. The movie holds no barrels and it's a punch to the stomach — but it should be watched because its poignancy. Great Blu-ray.

This documentary had me in tears. I had read about the orcas and their treatment, but this just show you how animals have feelings and mourn in their own language.

Blackfish is a must see. I always loved Sea World, but my opinion of the place changed 180 degrees in 1 hour and 30 minutes. I will never go there again. Poor whales.
