The Invisible Menace
Boris Karloff starred in this rather static whodunit from the Warner Bros. B-unit as Jeffries, a civilian employee at a military outpost who is accused of killing an ordnance expert, Reilly (Harlan Tucker). The murdered man is discovered by Pvt. Eddie Pratt (Eddie Craven) and his dumbbell bride Sally (Marie Wilson), whom he has managed to smuggle into the otherwise tightly secured military camp. Suspects at first, the couple prove too stupid to have killed anyone and the finger of suspicion instead points to Jeffries, a man with a past. As Colonel Bob Rogers (Cy Kendall) of the Intelligence Department explains, Jeffries has served time for embezzling government funds, a crime he has always maintained was actually committed by Reilly, the murder victim. And Jeffries is indeed innocent, a fact that becomes clear when Sally stumbles over the real killer. Jeffries is wounded in a heroic effort to prevent the culprit from fleeing, and Eddie and Sally are finally able to enjoy their honeymoon. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi

Devil's Island
Veteran movie heavy Boris Karloff plays a sympathetic role in Devil's Island. Karloff portrays a humanitarian physician, arrested for treating the wounds of a treasonous fugitive. Sent to the Devil's Island penal colony, Dr. Karloff runs afoul of sadistic commandant James Stephenson, who seems obsessed by the guillotine (an execution sequence is one of the film's longest scenes). Stephenson's wife Nedda Harrigan, fed up with her husband's cruelties, aids Karloff in turning the tables on the commandant. Participating in an escape, Karloff makes his way to freedom and clears his name. Devil's Island runs a scant 60 minutes, due to editing demands made by the French consulate in Washington, who felt that the film was detrimental to Franco-American relations. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

West of Shanghai
In this drama, the third remake of a popular play by Porter Emerson Browne, General Wu Yen Fang, "the White Tiger," is an outlaw general who controls the bulk of northern China. The story begins as he invades the village in which two fighters work to prevent avaricious Americans from foreclosing on their oil interests. The lover of one of these men is romantically involved with the estranged wife of one of the foreclosers. Because he once saved Gen. Wu's life, the officer returns the favor by killing the evil oil man. This causes the government to sentence the general to death. He willingly sacrifices his life and is at peace knowing that his friend can now marry the woman he loves. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
