Best DT Concert Video since Budokan

I've been a DT fan since '92 and own all of their releases. Previously, I had two high watermarks for their live concert videos: Metropolis 2000 Live Scenes from NY and Live at Budokan, especially the latter. I also believe that last years Live at Luna Park was excellent. I believe that DT have released one of their best concert videos with this release for several reasons: First and foremost, as always, it is an outstanding performance by all five members of the band. Secondly, it is an excellent setlist. Not specifically because of prioritization or favor of or not of any particular album, but rather the song choices themselves and their pacing through the course of the set. And finally, the camera angles. I noticed on the Luna Park video they had started using some GoPro angles (you can see the cameras throughout the video). They have added more here. They still have mostly the professional angles, but also many GoPro angles, as well. I think the band was very conscious of what they were doing and whether there was an available angle being filmed. And I like the fact that, more than in any concert video I can ever remember, nothing crazy is missed. They use some split screens sparingly, as necessary, to show some of these angles together. But to note: one of the Professional Cameras shot a lot of very good angles that gave multiple members playing crazy stuff in one shot. I truly feel like I didn't miss a moment (visually) of any of the really good stuff. For me that's the crazy instrumentation. Besides instrumentation, LaBrie had a great night also. Although a fan of Portnoy's drumming, I was not a huge fan of his backup vocals. As with Luna Park, the live backups sound much better now with only John Petrucci doing them. Mangini's drum solo is a bit shorter than on Luna Park but nevertheless as crazy and stellar as always. All of Petrucci and Ruddess' solos are magnificent and mind-boggling, as always. And John Myung makes playing a 6-string bass look a lot easier than it is; he is a great technician. I especially liked the fact that his break in "Dance of Eternity" was extended longer than the original. All five members represent the state of the art at their particular position. Yet, DT plays more as a band than a band that technical typically would or could. It's what separated them and makes them stand out as one of the greatest Prog/Prog Metal bands of all time. All in all, this video is as engaging as any live concert video I've seen. Absolutely 5 stars!

Whether you're a hard-core Dream Theater fan or someone who's never heard the band but has an interest in progressive rock, this is a must see DVD. This show consists of the same set list that Dream Theater used on their "Along For The Ride" tour in 2014. It includes most songs from their most recent (and self-titled album) "Dream Theater". The band also included a celebration of the 20th anniversary of their third album "Awake" by playing all songs from the second half of that album. For the encore, the band paid tribute to their album "Scenes From a Memory" for its 15-year anniversary. All musicians are top-notch and lead vocalist James LaBrie is fantastic throughout the entire evening. Highlights include a performance of "Space Dye Vest", which the band had not ever performed live since it was recorded for "Awake" in 1994, and the addition of an orchestra and chorus made up of students from the Berklee School of Music for some of the songs in the latter part of the show. The video is so clear and the mixing is pretty good - actually a little heavy on keyboard, but I really didn't mind that because keys are often covered up by guitars. I bought the Blu-Ray - may as well go for the better quality!

With every album and video, Dream Theater breaks new ground in musicianship, production, and engineering. "Live From Boston Opera" is way beyond any other recording of a live concert I've seen before. The visual and sound qualities are outstanding. Thoroughly recommended! Especially to those who, like me, have been unable for a while to see the greatest band live.

This is easily one of Dream Theater' s best DVD's. The set list is fantastic and getting to see the new drummer, Mike Mangini, perform the music he was a part of in the writing process was very enjoyable. Highly recommended for any music fan.

Man...everytime I see this band these guys amaze me. Top musicians, and I just love their music. This show, caught on camera, is special because of the added value being the orchestra. In one word...WOW!

This is an interesting release from Dream Theater featuring the heavier side of their sound performed by the current lineup. No need to say anymore, just check it out.
