A Worthy Purchase
Posted .If you were to say to Dave Hause, singer for The Loved Ones, that some of his fans might not receive his new record, Build & Burn, with open arms, he would tell you he doesn't care. He understands that people are fickle and you can't please everyone all of the time but you can please yourself as long as you stay true to yourself when writing music. It's that kind of musical honesty that makes Build & Burn stand out as a fantastic start to 2008. The members of the Loved Ones come together from a very strong punk rock background. Their resumes include Kid Dynamite, Paint It Black, Trial By Fire, The Curse and The Explosion. Build & Burn throws out the rule book that those bands followed and blazes a trail all of its own while still staying true to the Philadelphia working class punk rock attitude that the members grew up in. Tracks like "Pretty Good Year" and "The Inquirer" stay true to their roots but then they dive deeper into inspiration with songs like "Louisiana" and "Brittle Heart." Both of the latter drawing influences from their more classic rock and americana influences. The album even features guest appearances by members of The Hold Steady playing a variety of instruments including the saw. Yes, the saw. If you've never heard of the Loved Ones before, Build & Burn is a perfect introduction to these Philadelphia boys. If you're a die hard fan, don't judge the book by it's cover. Give this record at least 2 listens and I assure you that you will be impressed. Build & Burn is truly one of the best albums to hit the stores so far in 2008 and should stay around the top of this list throughout the year.
