Synopsis

Bullitt
Robert L. Pike's crime novel Mute Witness makes the transition to the big screen in this film from director Peter Yates. In one of his most famous roles, Steve McQueen stars as tough-guy police detective Frank Bullitt. The story begins with Bullitt assigned to a seemingly routine detail, protecting mafia informant Johnny Ross (Pat Renella), who is scheduled to testify against his Mob cronies before a Senate subcommittee in San Francisco. But when a pair of hitmen ambush their secret location, fatally wounding Ross, things don't add up for Bullitt, so he decides to investigate the case on his own. Unfortunately for him, ambitious senator Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn), the head of the aforementioned subcommittee, wants to shut his investigation down, hindering Bullitt's plan to not only bring the killers to justice but discover who leaked the location of the hideout. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

    Greatest Car Chase Scene

Not a bad attempt for a movie that is 40 years old. The video displays minimal grain but is present in darker scenes. Sound is bland and flat but this is to be expected in a film of this vintage. The movie has a great Chase scene between a 67/390hp Mustang & a Dodge Charger/440 on the hills and streets of San Francisco. Most likely the greatest car chase of all time. Acting is strong but the plot is thin but will not leave you yawning... Steve McQueen proves why he was such a strong presence on the Hollywood scene in the late 60's as a top notch action hero.

One of the best car chase scenes ever during the Ford vs Mopar horsepower days and through San Fransisco! Like seeing it for the first time on BD! If you like the sound of Detroit V8 musle, smoking & screeching tires, airborne heavy metal this is it!

This is my Mc Queen favorite movie , he did the driving in it and most of all his own stunts. Something today’s stars do not. Today’s so called stars nothing more than overpaid crybabies. Watch this , and SEE how a real actor does it !!!

...so much more, in fact. Having not seen the film in many years, and having been very young at the time of its original release, it's easy to forget the adult themes of the storyline and concentrate on the ground-breaking car chase scene. Now I realize what a good story it really was, how suspenseful and complex with several twists and turns. Heroic and upstanding moral character is on display especially as portrayed by Steve McQueen and Simon Oakland. The car chase is great, but McQueen's easygoing but determined pursuit of the truth is, in itself, a real reward for the audience. A real gutsy detective in an era when the audience didn't need to be bombarded by profanity to see his strength and determination.

This is a great movie, especially for the time it was made as I understand it was one of the very first to have a high-speed chase sequence in it. I learned more about Steve McQueen after seeing the movie "Steve McQueen: American Icon" which is also a very good movie!
