This has been shown on my PBS station. I kept hearing about it and started watching it. After watching it, I knew I wanted to watch it over and show it to other family members, so I will be buying each series as it comes out on dvd. The series came from books written by a midwife in London during the 50's, so some plots and characters are from her memoirs. The writing is so outstanding, I can't praise it enough. It is touching and moving without being maudlin or manipulative. The casting is brilliant and contains one of my favorite characters ever - the nurse, 'Chummy'. It is even more popular in Britain than Downton Abbey.

Great second season about real midwives in 1957 Lo
My husband was kind enough to buy this first season after we watched the second season. Manfully he managed to get past the scary scenes while I stayed glued to the set. The drama is true, even if the real stories had to be written into scripts for the actors, and it is so easy to forget that it's a play that you are watching because everything is so real - the stories, the characters, the settings. The technical part - the lighting, the sound, the cinematography - are all excellent, so the viewer is unaware of them.
