    Excellent Pocketable Camera

    Posted
    Techmaster

My objective was a small camera that would deliver high quality photos at a reasonable price. I was able to get a super deal, lower than the sale price, so I bought the camera but even at the $449 price, it is still reasonable for a 1 inch sensor camera. With the great deal, I bought a 3 year extended warranty with accident protection and an extra battery. I also picked up a Lowerpro case which is just slightly bigger than the camera so it is still pockeable. I am an active amateur photographer but can't always bring my Canon SLR. I always like to have a camera with me besides my cell phone. My iPhone does a great job but there are times when you want or need a regular camera. This is the niche of the Canon 9GX. I was hesitant at first because many functions are accessible by touchscreen exclusively but it has not been a problem and in some ways it is easier to access the controls. The low light performance is excellent and is a rather bright lens at f2.8 but as you zoom in that does change. The photos are very sharp, good color accuracy, and vibrant. The videos are also excellent. I use mainly the P mode but I do use Shutter Priority and Aperture Priority every so often to achieve certain effects, For example, when photographing water such as a fountain, or stream and want to emphasis slow motion or stop motion I will set the shutter speed. I will use Aperture Priority to control depth of field. However, the camera does a good job of depth of field. This camera in a small form factor gives you full manual control. The camera does not have a viewfinder or articulating screen which would have been an asset. I have had no trouble seeing the screen in bright sunlight and have also taken selfies as well. I highly recommend this camera. It delivers. If i had bought a bigger or heavier camera or more expensive that was not pocketable....it would be sitting home a lot. I trusted this camera for my daughter' s wedding and small grandkids and I have gotten superior results. The upgrade to this is the Canon G7X Mark ii which is excellent, but still no viewfinder but it will set you back a few hundred dollars more and is bigger and heavier. I have used the camera too and I love it. It does edge out the Canon G9X but the G9X is excellent too. I also wanted an everyday camera that i could throw in my bag and by the time I added extended warranty and accessories to the G 7X Mark ii it would cost 1000 dollars and i could not justify that for an everyday camera. That is when I decided on the G9X which takes excellent photos and is smaller and lighter. The camera has a 3X zoom ratio which is adequate for everyday photography. I have used the digital zoom and was very surprised at the great results. I have other cameras with great zoom capabilty so it was not an issue for me. Read the reviews which are excellent and go for it !

Bought for my wife who LOVES the "retro" look, not to mention great quality images. Best camera ounce for ounce. Read quite a few reviews before deciding and am very happy that I chose this model over even some of the more expensive options. Buy it, you won't be disappointed. This is coming from a long-time Canon PowerShot user.

I travel by motorcycle and wanted a camera with lots of control and features, but in a small package. The Cannon is perfect for the job. Better image quality than a smart phone, tons of flexibility and it fits in my shirt pocket. Nice overall design, too. Not inexpensive, but worth the price.

This is a great camera that fits in any pocket. It has advanced features like shutter and aperture priority. The 1" sensor is a plus for quality. I just wish the range was a bit longer for when your feet can't get you there. Better than your phone and lighter than your DSLR. Thumbs up!

The Canon Powershot G9x is Canon's best "pocketable" camera to date! Image quality is high, with the 1 inch sensor. Digital noise is low through ISO 800. Focus is fairly speedy, especially in good light, to catch kids and pets. Battery life is decent, though I would advise you to carry a spare battery. Movie quality is decent also. The value for what you get, compared to it's rival brands, is good. Give this camera a try, I think you'll like it ☺

I have an ILC I use when traveling, but wanted something smaller and pocketable. I used to have the Canon S series, but that line had gone away. I tried the G7 X, bought found it too bulky that I couldn't justify it over my ILC or a Sony RX100. With the G9 X, it brings back the S series' form factor, but with a great design and better sensor. I've found this to be a great travel pocket camera that complements my larger camera nicely for times where I don't want to carry a camera bag, and definitely is easier to tote than the more bulky Sony RX100 line.

With its 1" sensor, the Canon G9X takes photos of the best image quality possible for anything in its size class. Note that this is the only truly pocketable camera on the market at the moment with a 1" sensor, being noticeably thinner and lighter than the Canon G7X. I can carry the G9X quite comfortably in my front jeans pocket, which I cannot ray for the G7X or the Sony RX100.

Great camera - glad I bought it. Very high quality pictures. I do miss the lack of viewfinder, though. I like to take very distant bird photos then zoom in to do ID. Without viewfinder this is hard to do, though when I do manage to photograph a bird using screen the results are still good. Biggest objection is lack of a written guide to the camera. It was a hassle to get online manual, and still don't know how to use many functions.
