Career Bed/Sex by Advertisement [DVD]

1960s sexploitation at its most deliriously sleazy is the order of the day on this double-feature DVD from Something Weird Video. Career Bed and Sex by Advertisement were both directed by Joel M. Reed, most famous for the perverse 42nd Street standby Bloodsucking Freaks, and they display a grimy humor and palpable enthusiasm for the sexual underbelly of New York City that's wildly entertaining. Thankfully, both films are served well on this disc. Career Bed and Sex by Advertisement have been transferred to DVD in their original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and both are well photographed by the standards of the genre, with a good gray scale throughout. The print for Career Bed displays some noticeable wear here and there (mostly in the form of brief emulsion scratches), but is more than watchable, while Sex by Advertisement was mastered from a very clean source and looks all but mint. The audio for both movies has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo (retaining the original monophonic sound mixes), with English-language dialogue and no subtitles or multiple language options. Bonus materials include the original trailer for Career Bed, previews of six other sleaze epics, a truly warped bonus short entitled The Filth Shop (in which "Lola Lust" and Satan discuss stealing souls through sexual temptation while we watch clips from a number of softcore features), and a gallery of sexploitation artwork accompanied by vintage radio spots. While Career Bed and Sex by Advertisement aren't among the better-known titles in the '60s sexploitation pantheon, they rank with the most entertaining, and film fans with a taste for the low life will get their kicks with this disc.

Synopsis

Sex by Advertisement
You'll be shocked, amazed, and maybe just a little bit creeped out by the things you can find in your newspaper's classified ads in this vintage sexploitation "mockumentary" from Joel M. Reed. Psychologist Dr. Joanne Ridgefield (Georgina Spelvin) serves as host and guide to this exploration of the sexual netherworld, which can be accessed through discreet ads placed in "underground" newspapers and on public bulletin boards. Through Dr. Ridgefield, we meet voyeurs looking for good peeping spots, homosexuals on the cruise for new partners, masked swingers clubs, nudie photographers trolling for naïve new models, a man who makes a good living providing S & M enthusiasts with leather gear, adult film societies screening stag movies for heavy-breathing fans, and "Lonely Hearts Clubs" preying on unsuspecting bachelors looking for relationships with teenage girls. Director Joel M. Reed (who would later make the bizarre horror-comedy Bloodsucking Freaks) and actress Jennifer Welles (a major star in 1970s adult films) can be spotted in cameo roles. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Career Bed
A woman with a powerful taste for the good life is willing to do anything to help make her daughter a star in this vintage sexploitation opus. Emily Potter (Honey Hunter) is a middle-aged divorcée who has moved to New York City with her beautiful daughter, Susan (Liza Duran, aka Jennifer Welles); Emily is determined that Susan is going to go places in show business, though Susan herself would just as soon return to her fiancé and small-town life. A firm believer in the power of the casting couch, Emily uses her own body to break up Susan's engagement and attract the attentions of a creepy but well-connected photographer, while brokering liaisons between Susan and a lesbian talent agent (Merle Miller, aka Georgina Spelvin), a kinky film producer (Charles Carlton Buffum), and an egocentric director. But Susan learns a few things about the sleazy tricks of the trade en route, and pulls a fast one on Emily in the final reel. Career Bed was written and directed by Joel M. Reed, who in time graduated from softcore sexploitation to the infamous slasher comedy Bloodsucking Freaks. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
