    Synopsis

    Carrie
This classic horror movie based on Stephen King's first novel stars Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, a shy, diffident teenager who is the butt of practical jokes at her small-town high school. Her blind panic at her first menstruation, a result of ignorance and religious guilt drummed into her by her fanatical mother, Margaret (Piper Laurie), only causes her classmates' vicious cruelty to escalate, despite the attentions of her overly solicitous gym teacher (Betty Buckley). Finally, when the venomous Chris Hargenson (Nancy Allen) engineers a reprehensible prank at the school prom, Carrie lashes out in a horrifying display of her heretofore minor telekinetic powers. Many films had featured school bullies, but Carrie was one of the first to focus on the special brand of cruelty unique to teenage girls. Carrie's world is presented as a snake pit, where the well-to-do female students all have fangs -- even the reticent Sue Snell (Amy Irving) -- and all the males are blind pawns, sexually twisted around the fingers of Chris and her evil cronies. The talented supporting cast includes John Travolta, P.J. Soles, and William Katt. One of the genre's true classics, the film was followed by a sequel in 1999, as well as by a famously unsuccessful Broadway musical adaptation that starred Betty Buckley, the movie's gym teacher, as Margaret White. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

"Carrie" is one heck of a movie. It's horror and drama all wrapped up in one. Sissy Spacek plays the timid Carrie White, a girl who is tormented by her classmates, and abused by her religious fanatic mother, Margaret (Piper Laurie). No one likes her, except for her gym teacher Miss Collins (Betty Buckley), but after a terrible prank in the girls locker room, one of the pranksters, Sue Snell (Amy Irving) feels sorry for what she did and asks her popular football player jock boyfriend Tommy (William Katt) to ask Carrie to the prom. He agrees and for once, the audience is happy for Carrie, seeing she is having a great time at the prom, but the evil Chris Hargenson (Nancy Allen) decides to pull a prank on Carrie that proves all too deadly. This film is fantastic. It is a cross between drama (the first half) and complete horror (the second half). The weird thing is, you really do feel sorry for Carrie! The way she is tormented by her classmates and her mother is awful, but the viewer knows about her new "powers" and she really makes use of them during that prom! By the way, in case anyone is confused by this, Carrie was imagining her classmates laughing at her, they really weren't. Based on the novel by Stephen King, it spawned numerous imitations and was followed by a sequel 23 years later.

Great Movie, But Buy the 'Special Edition' Instead

Oddly, the first emotion I experienced when watching this movie was not one of fear, instead it was my heart melting for the main character. She's sweet, shy, and beautiful, yet she's picked on and made fun of because she's different, and not 'in' with the gossipy popular crowd, she also comes from a broken home, and lives with a mother who is certifiably crazy. 'Carrie,' although technically considered a horror film (a genre I don't care for), never quite achieved the recognition it deserved. Critics generally praised the film, but it's 'R' rating and dark tone eliminated it's ability to reach audiences on a large scale. Excellent performances across the board, and a good special edition dvd, make this one worth the buy. Highly Recommended.

I'll admit I like torture films and in Carrie there are different types of torture. Carrie is an abused teenager with a void where her self-esteem should be. Her mother is a whacko religious nut who likes to violently throw Carrie around for imagined sins and lock her in the closet for days on end. Carrie is not so much a horror film as it is a psychological one. High school misfit Carrie finally has enough and unleashes her telekinetic fury on her tormentors. Although the movie was made in 1976 it can still be enjoyed today. Nowadays, we have literal truck loads of books on how to deal with our tormented teenage daughters. Is this movie the reason those books were written?

What can I say about this classic suspense/horror film? This movie haunted the heck out of me for years since seeing it at a very young age (yes 6 years old my parents let me watch this with them!) I'll never forget how I cringed when that blood hit her, she looked like a demented clown to me with those bulging blue eyes! The ending is one of the best in movie history and of course I was afraid a hand was going to come from under the bed after I saw it. This is Brian DePalma's best work in my opinion as far as suspense/thrillers.

Big fan of this movie I own the original MGM bluray which was ok soft picture decent sound. The new Scream Factory bluray is mastered in 4k from the OCN from what ive read so I buy it Well this is the best Carrie has ever looked period I did a side by side comparison and it is night and day Now it is still a little soft that is the way it was filmed but colors and fine grain make all of the difference Sound was about the same to be honest maybe a little better in the bass but for the most part a draw If you are a fan this is the one to buy Excellent

What can I say about Carrie, not much that you shouldn't already know. Classic De Palma horror film based on the King novel of the same name. All atmosphere with a great performance by Sissy Spacek who plays our bullied protagonist that discovers she has supernatural powers. The highlight of the movie for me is the creepy and brilliant performance of Piper Laurie who plays Carrie's mother. Once again Scream Factory goes all out for this collector's release. Great transfer, amazing audio and loaded with tons of extra features.

An aging film, but still pretty creepy. Not so much due to the psychokinetic nerd vengeance it builds to, but due to the realness of the awful treatment of the lead character. Especially between her and her mother. Some of the heavier effects scenes toward the end could have been shot more realistically, but the human aspects of the film still hold true and are plenty effective to anyone empathetic to the world of the emotionally abused nerd/geeks, especially those who also love Stephen King-style vengeance stories.
