Synopsis

Chocolat
The most tempting of all sweets becomes the key weapon in a battle of sensual pleasure versus disciplined self-denial in this comedy. In 1959, a mysterious woman named Vianne (Juliette Binoche) moves with her young daughter into a small French village, where much of the community's activities are dominated by the local Catholic church. A few days after settling into town, Vianne opens up a confectionery shop across the street from the house of worship -- shortly after the beginning of Lent. While the townspeople are supposed to be abstaining from worldly pleasures, Vianne tempts them with unusual and delicious chocolate creations, using her expert touch to create just the right candy to break down each customer's resistance. With every passing day, more and more of Vianne's neighbors are succumbing to her sinfully delicious treats, but the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), the town's mayor, is not the least bit amused; he is eager to see Vianne run out of town before she leads the town into a deeper level of temptation. Vianne, however, is not to be swayed, and with the help of another new arrival in town, a handsome Irish Gypsy named Roux (Johnny Depp), she plans a "Grand Festival of Chocolate," to be held on Easter Sunday. Based on the novel by Joanne Harris, Chocolat features a distinguished supporting cast, including Judi Dench, Lena Olin, Carrie-Anne Moss, Peter Stormare, Hugh O'Conor, and Leslie Caron. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

    A Rich Chocolate Treat!

Chocolat is as delightful as Easter Day itself, yet, like a good priest on Easter, it packs a powerful punch of a sermon! The moral lesson we learn is of the evils of the sin of legalism, with which Comte Paul de Reynaud (Alfred Molina) struggles - and ultimately overcomes! While being reviled and criticized for making and selling chocolate during Lent, the cheerful heroine Vianne (Juliette Binoche) is actually the self-disciplined one by spreading not only chocolate, but joy, into a gloomy town, and, in the process, even saving the life of the misunderstood Josephine (Lena Olin). The acting is completely flawless, and this is one of the best-written movies I have ever seen. I particularly enjoyed Vianne's story of her parents, which included the origins of the beloved delicacy chocolate, in all its forms! Dame Judi Dench is magnificent as the sensible Amande who keeps Vianne on the right track whenever she gets tempted to sin by giving up, and Johnny Depp as Vianne's eccentric upbeat boyfriend Roux is purely magical! The icing on this rich chocolate delicacy of a movie is the lively gypsy folk-like music! This movie is very close to Joanne Harris' book, on which it is based, and I discovered that reading the book just adds to the pleasure of the movie. Most important of all is that this movie shows the importance of one of the greatest virtues of all: joy!

Beautiful colors and expert actors make this fantasy absolutely believable. The plot is simple - Love, patience and respect for those who do not share your lifestyle. The scenes were largely focused in the Chocolat shop, and colors used there and for Juliette Binoche's wardrobe kept my eyes glued to the set as the story unfolded. I wanted to redecorate my house - simply beautiful. Actors Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, Johnny Depp, Lena Olin, and all the supporting cast made this a most enjoyable film. And the chocolate!!! You could taste it through the screen. This is a perfect matinee film, and you must watch it with richly spiced hot chocolat!!
