Okay product lousy customer support
Posted .I bought this to replace my old router of a different brand. I kept having difficulty getting it to work but I forgot the most obvious thing was to reset my modem. The instructions do not reference connection with a modem. It only mentions from a pc directly. I knew I was doing something wrong. Called support and they assisted me and helped me secure the router, however the technician put this product down and wanted me to buy another one for $179. I paid less than $50 for this and it works fine. Then I ?d how to connect my printer, he referred me to another technician for info on purchasing additional tech support services which could help me hook up the printer. Basic package was $80 and they would help me. I told the person I just wanted to know what was part of the Optimization service and tech support. She wanted me to buy it and got nasty. I told her I was going to try and connect my printer on my own. She again got nasty and told me not to mess with the configuration. All they want to do is sell more product and services. Thanks Ronda for hanging up on me when I refused to buy. I got my printer and router and pcs working just fine without you and the added expense. I will buy another brand just because they are pushy sales people not technical support.

Not Pleased
Posted .I bought this router because salesperson recommended it and had a linksys WRT54G which worked well. I had problems setting this one up on DSL and called linksys support. The support person was rude and stated that if I needed any advanced help I would have to pay $10.00 for this support. I told him all I wanted was basic setup, he stated that I should just set the router to DHCP and that was all. It was not how my old llinksys was setup with SBC and I was only able to connect with my 3 wireless computers and hard wired computer for two days. After that all I got was server not found, after a few hours of playing and going back on previous settings I finally got it to work. I strongly do not recommend buying this if you are a novice and support is horrible. Not only that but linksys cost more than other brands. This has not been a pleasant buying experience

Works great except wireless is inconsistent
Posted .I got this router when I got a new ISP several months ago because my old router was incompatible with the new modem. I'm relatively experienced with setting up basic home networks and with computers in general so I dove right in. With routers, you don't need to use the enclosed CD, typically, as they usually are just instruction manuals and extra software. I have the router wired to a desktop PC, my XBox 360, and my TV, as well as an older WRT54G router daisy-chained to it, configured as a network switch with wireless turned off, to serve a couple computers upstairs. I also have my Wii and a couple laptops that use the wireless network. Operating systems have included XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Linux. Overall, the router works great. Setup is a breeze, and configuration is powerful. The default settings I find on Linksys routers are generally what I like, meaning that I don't have to go into the setup page and fiddle around with it to get each networked device (like the XBox) to work properly. I've had this experience on other devices. The only major gripe that I do have with it is the fact that the wireless can cut out every now and then. It doesn't require a router reboot, but it does interrupt my internet connection on wireless for a few seconds, and that gets annoying, especially if you're connected to an online game or chatroom. As far as a basic wireless router for home use, I would definitely recommend it.

Firmware issues/LELA software
Posted .Bought this router to replace an aging WRT54G. For some reason install CD would not find my ethernet port(built in with computer), so bought a ethernet PCI card. No problems installing the software once that was completed. Set up of router and security was fairly simple after that. Connection on our laptop went from 54mps to 130 mps. The desktop is wired. Neither would load an internet page the first time. Always said it could not find DNS server. Went to Linksys site, support was of no help, but the forums was. Had to load a earlier version of the firmware. If you get this router, go to linksys forums, and search for 160n DNS issues. There is a guy with a link to the firmware and good instructions. Router works great now. But the included software LELA (linksys easy link advisor) is worthless and will not run. But will slow your computer until you uninstall it. And on the Linksys forums that is all you hear about it, it does not work, and there is no fix. So beware if you get this router. It is very nice once set up properly, but I am sure you can find one with out the hassle.

Wireless, Yes - Wired, No
Posted .I purchased this N-type router because I have a computer with a wireless card connected to my big screen television and wanted better quality pictures when watching videos from my DVD rental service. After reading many reviews, I decided on the combination of the Linksys 160N router and the 600N USB adapter. The improvement in the wireless connection was well worth the $160 I paid for both. However, the wired connection to my office computer was very unstable. It would shut down and take a long time to reconnect. I couldn’t do the simplest things such as send and receive e-mail without my software timing out. After several hours with technical service and several adjustments to settings, nothing was improved. I finally had to purchase a D-Link wired router to solve the problem. Now my signal goes to the wired router with one line going directly to my office computer and the other going to the 160N wireless router. If you want great wireless performance, this is a very good router, but if you also need a wired connection, be forewarned.

I Survived The Install!
Posted .Wow, has this been an adventure! It all started a week ago with the decision to replace our beloved 5 year old 802.11b router with something more up to date. We purchased the Linksys WRT160N because it was on sale and carried the Linksys name. Reading online reviews was done after the fact and boy was it an eye opener. All of the “N” routers had countless good and bad reviews which made us consider abandoning the upgrade all together. We kept the box unopened pending a decision… In the end we stuck with the Linksys WRT160N because ours was a version 3 and NOT one of the dreaded version 2’s. Our serial number starts with CSE41. We followed the initial install instructions to the letter and everything went wonderfully. The wired desktop connected without issue. Three of our four wireless devices (notebook, netbook, Sirius radio) were close at hand so I installed them and all three connected without issue. Wow, that was easy! It was getting late so I decided to leave the 4th wireless device (upstairs desktop) until morning. In the morning I went to connect the 4th device and couldn’t get it to connect. I turned on the other three wireless devices and NONE of them would connect either! The install process ends with a version of “Network Magic” getting installed. NM has a nifty network graphical display that showed my wireless devices as “connected” but the devices themselves were not. Then suddenly, a device would connect and a NM pop-up would show up to tell me about it. Just as suddenly the connection would go away. The software was also telling me to install NM on my wireless devices which I didn’t want to do. I also didn’t care for the messages suggesting I buy an upgrade to NM. I went into the router via the web and verified MAC addresses, the passkey, etc. Still fluky. GoodRead65’s unit came with “Linksys EasyLink Advisor” which he ultimately uninstalled. I followed suit and uninstalled NM, reset the router, and restarted the devices. Everything worked fine the remainder of the day. I was wondering if NM’s constant poling of the network might have been a cause for it’s fluky behavior. Guess I’ll never know… Several reviewers (of earlier versions) mentioned how things took a turn for the worse when updating the firmware. Linksys has an update but we’re going to stay away unless we encounter problems. Other reviewers spoke highly of third party firmware (DD-WRT) which is available for our version 3 unit so that’s an option should we need it.

Not reliable with TiVo or PS3
Posted .I needed a replacement for my 802.11G Apple Airport Express. Our wireless network was not all it should be so I decided to step out of my Apple comfort zone (we use all Macs in our house) and try something new. On sale for $80 this router was $100 cheaper than the current Apple Airport Extreme base station. I have never set up a non-Apple wireless router and now I know why. The web-based setup is not for the novice. I have a fair amount of tech/computer knowledge but the web based setup tool uses too many technical terms and I could see how a non-tech savvy person could get confused. Gotta be a better way. After I got it all set up and running my wireless internet speeds went from about 12MBps to a respectable 18. I was happy with that and was planning on keeping the unit until I realized that our TiVo HD and PS3 would not stay connected with it. While watching Netflix streaming movies on the TiVo HD, the connection would drop and the movie would just stop. I would have to set up the wireless network on the TiVo again and connect to the service to get the Netflix movie back. The PS3 took all day to download the Beatles Rock Band Abbey Road expansion pack because of intermittent connections. Also, I could not reliably transfer video files from my Mac to the PS3. Thats when I knew it was time to return it and try something else. I returned the router and paid the extra money for the Apple Airport Extreme and... well... not to sound like another one of those crazy "Apple People"- It is what I should have done to begin with. I now get 23MBps wireless internet speeds, blazing fast network data transfers and the TiVo and PS3 are back to being happy- and faster than ever when using an internet connection. I really wanted to like the Linksys router and was hoping that the "Apple Tax" would prove true in this instance. But it did not.

Works fine with Mac
Posted .For years, we have been happy users of a Netgear MR314 wireless router. But it didn't reach the farthest corner of our home. In looking at various routers, I found many mixed reviews for the newer Netgear routers, so decided to try the Linksys WRT160N. We use almost nothing but Macs in our home. Setup: Forget the included CD that comes with this router, it is Windows only. It does have the User Guide as a PDF buried in one of the folders. But it is not much help. Instead, just turn on the router, look for the wireless signal (or plug in directly using an ethernet cable), then use FireFox - the current Safari doesn't work and any changes cause a "server unexpectedly dropped connection" error. Type: 192.168.1.1 in the browser, then user name "linksys" and password "admin" to get the web based setup menus. From there, if you have any questions, click on the "Help" link for the individual pages. The help there is much better than in the User Guide. This router is able to reach the far corner of our house, and uses WPA, etc. I would have given the router 5 stars if the documentation had been better, and if the Mac had been mentioned. (Even though it's really, really simple to set up the Mac for wireless, it's still nice to be recognized.)
