Top 5 Rush CD comes 38 years after first album

I'm a Rush fiend. They can do little wrong in my book. That being said, I can disagree with the notion that a band make its best album after 18 previous attempts. Moving Pictures was their greatest achievement. I would still slot this in the top 5 Rush albums. The musicianship is some of the best they've had in the last 20 years. I haven't listened to a new Rush record as much as this one since Presto. It hasn't become boring and each pass through you pick up little things you didn't hear before (drum fill, awesome bass line in a spot or a cool Alex riff coming out of the right speaker...etc). The lyrics are great (as always) and make me eager for the companion book that dives deeper into the story outlined with the CD. My favorite songs are Caravan, Carnies, The Wreckers, Headlong Flight, Wish Them Well and The Garden. There are some really great chorus' in the songs. Carnies is a hooky-as-hell chorus, same with The Wreckers. Wish Them Well is a great end anthem. Melodically, the verses are quite uplifting. Headlong Flight is a great jam song. Geddy Lee shines with his bass grooves. It's fun to hear a 58 year old guy shred on the bass. Neil is going to be 60 in September and I challenge anybody to find a drummer who hits harder than he does. While his approach to the tracking is different this time around, I appreciate what he did on this album. It's still bombastic but he was more spontaneous in the studio to a point where I miss his diligent creation of drum parts. Alex didn't play enough solos for me on the record but I've always loved his rhythm style. He's really an iconic guitar player who is in a league of his own. Production-wise, you can hear some editing of the drum parts. The sections don't flow together in some spots (title track is the worst in my opinion). The remixes of Caravan and BU2B aren't as good as the single versions released in 2010. Drums aren't as loud throughout the CD either. You can hear all of them fine but I keep wishing for the toms to stand out more. The low end is a bit muddy. You tend to lose some of the bass drum in spots (there's a great double bass thing on the last chorus of Clockwork Angels that you can sense more than hear. It would have been nice to have a punchier kick). I'm extremely happy with this release from the band. It should please every single Rush fan out there. It would be the one CD of their new stuff I would suggest to somebody who has never heard Rush.

Overall a great album with a storyline that takes the listener on a 60+ minute autobiographical journey. If you were a fan of 2112's concept then you'll really enjoy Clockwork Angels. Getting past the previously released Caravan and BU2B, fans will enjoy the 7+ minute Headlong Flight and Wish Them Well plays like Rush's attempt at something that radio stations might actually play when they need to give Moving Pictures a rest. Also in the 7+ minute category, the title track is another highlight of the album. Carnies hints at the double-neck guitar era that first put Rush on the rock scene. Overall a true Rush fan will enjoy this release as much as any previous album. I recommend having the liner notes handy during your first listen as they really help set up the story. I can't wait to read the hardcover version of this story...

There is so much mind rockin sauce in this music that it keeps spilling out over the top. No other way to describe it Jacky Baby. My first listen was ok. I like Caravan and BU2B and then Headlong Flight because that really wasn't a first listen. I could only catch glimmers of the rest of the songs but the friction would only be worn by persistence. My tired mind started shape shifting to absorb what was happening in the rest of the album. It is GR8. There are no favorite songs. Just an hour of mind blowing music for your enjoyment. It's Rush. I expect it. I enjoy it. Buy this album and nurture and protect your garden.

A semi-conceptual album, nothing short of brilliant, Alex Lifeson returns! Heavy layered guitars reminiscent of the Hemisphere/Permanent Wave era. Rush really lost me in the late '80's and '90's with the keyboards and pop, This is album is nothing like that, so if you're looking for Big Money , save your money. This album is for the Hemisphere/Moving Pictures fan. Must buy!!!!

This is easily the best Rush album since Power Windows. I was blown away after my first listen. The standout tracks for me are The Anarchist, Headlong Flight, and The Garden.
