The original "Coda" appeared to fill the contractual obligations of Led Zeppelin to Atlantic via their custom Swan Song imprint after the passing of their drummer John Bonham.
There are definitely many amazing performances here. The most interesting are the bulk of the "In Through The Outdoor" outtakes, the strongest being the song that closes out the original release - "Wearing & Tearing".
For this one selection alone, the collection is worth buying. It is by far one of the most uptempo, aggressive, and dare I say "mean" performances the band had ever turned in. Circumstances surrounding the sessions in which this song was tracked have long passed into lore as a band falling apart due to intensive travel, personal tragedy, chemical dependency, so on and so forth - and let me say that this documented recording challenges the validity of those stories. If they do happen to be true, than this wipes away any residue from that could tarnish an amazing performance.
There are better documentarians out there for Zeppelin than myself. I concede this readily - but for what this collection is, it definitely delivers.
The reason I went for this completist deluxe edition was for the packaging - a beautiful dark green box that contains the vinyl, cd, and digital download copies of the release, rounded out by an exclusive print and beautiful hardbound book that jumps through the years of which these recordings were taken.
I know there are omissions, such as a song entitled "Swan Song" (an epic 20 minute or so guitar orchestral piece that has surfaced on bootlegs through the years), live documentation (no "Song Remains The Same" or "How The West Was Won", not to mention "BBC Sessions" compilations or overview from their respective releases) - but in truth, this is a fitting end to an astonishing body of work.
If you are a casual fan, you'll still delight to "We're Gonna Groove", "Poor Tom", and an incredible sound check performance of "I Can't Quit You Babe" - I'd say it's like hearing tunes from a band you are somewhat familiar with, and stumble upon in wake of your distant acquaintance.
If you are invested in Zeppelin - full disclosure, I purchased each of these Super Deluxe sets, and next to the first album, this is my favorite comprehensive reissue - you will be completely satisfied.
A quick note - www.bestbuy.com took my order on the 29th as a preorder, and after selecting the Express option, had it to my door before 12 PM on the 31st, the offical release date. It was packaged amazingly, secured with air tight bubble wrap, an individual cardboard case with foam padding, and sealed with care. Excellent job, Best Buy!
