Printer Buying Tips
The Best Printer for You
Even in this interconnected world, where it seems you can do everything with your smartphone, there are still going to be times when you need the tried and true technology of printing to paper.
A good start for finding the best printer for you is to determine where and how you'll be using it. Will you be printing a few sheets a day, dozens, or hundreds? Are you looking for an office printer or a home printer? Do you need only black-and-white printing, or is color capability important? And what about extra functions such as copying, scanning and faxing? Do you want a computer printer, or will you be printing directly from another device, like your camera?
Choosing a Printer Type
Your first decision is whether you want a printer designed for printing only, or if you'll be using your printer to scan, copy or fax, in which case, you're looking for an all-in-one printer.
Next, select a type. Two of the most popular printer types are inkjet and laser. If picture quality is the priority, you'll want an inkjet printer. Inkjet printers are the best at printing a combination of text, graphics, and photos, at blending colors, and at printing on a wide variety of media. So, for instance, if you're using graphic design software, you'll be best served by the versatility of an inkjet printer.
If you'll only be printing text documents like letters, spreadsheets and documentation, and a lot of them, a laser printer might make the most sense for you.
Other printer types to consider include 3D printers, that can synthesize a three-dimensional object, and large format printers, capable of printing widths between 18" and 100", for printing architectural plans or maps, for instance.
Ink and Paper Costs
Although tempting, it’s probably not wise to base your decision on purchase price alone. You should also consider the cost of printer toner, inks and printer papers. An inexpensive printer with costly toner or papers is actually an expensive printer in disguise. Additionally, when you’re considering inks, remember that color pages require either multiple ink cartridges or combination cartridges, so if you get a printer that accepts individual cartridges, you can replace just one color as needed, rather than spending extra money on a full tricolor cartridge.
