Synopsis

Conan the Barbarian
John Milius's jingoistic direction and pulpy screenplay fit perfectly into this film version of the Robert E. Howard fantasy story of the sword and sorcery hero, Conan the Barbarian. Complementing Mulius's heavy metal production is Arnold Schwarzenegger's leaden acting, which in any other context would be deadly, but here (as in The Terminator) corresponds nicely with the whole sonorous project. The story begins when a horde of rampaging warriors massacre the parents of young Conan and enslave the young child for years on The Wheel of Pain. The Wheel of Pain seems to have as its only purpose the building up of Conan's muscles, so it's no surprise that one day Conan grows up to become Arnold Schwarzenegger. As the sole survivor of the childhood massacre, Conan is released from slavery and taught the ancient arts of fighting. Transforming himself into a killing machine, Conan travels into the wilderness to seek vengeance on Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones), the man responsible for killing his family. In the wilderness, Conan takes up with the thieves Valeria (Sandahl Bergman) and Subota (Gerry Lopez). The trio comes upon a weird snake cult, linked to Doom, and Conan wants to trek off to Doom's mountain retreat to kill him. But he is prevented from doing that by King Osrik (Max Von Sydow), who wants the trio of warriors to help rescue his daughter who has joined Doom in the hills. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Buy it for the new DTS 5.1 soundtrack alone!

If you grew up with this movie it is a must own. I've been waiting forever for a new redo mix of the soundtrack. Conan the barbarian was originally mixed to mono for theatre release and it trickled down to every VHS and DVD made. Now on bluray the sound is fantastic. The score is one of the best made in the last 30 years so to be in DTS MA 5.1 is a real treat. The sound effects were not redone so it sounds very much the same as the original mix. The picture looks great for it's age. And it's fun seeing Arnold in his thirties in great shape. A must own.

I grew up in the 80's and am a huge RE Howard fan, but somehow I'd never seen the original Conan movie before now. The film seemed to take a few parts from various Howard stories, but overall was pretty loose with it's interpretation of Conan. For being an "action" film it was light on the action and really seemed to drag for most of the film. Arnold's acting was pretty limited and thankfully the narrator did most of his lines to keep me from having to turn on subtitles. Thus far, I'd say Solomon Kane is my favorite film based on Howard's work.

Its great to see the real Conan - rather than that mess they released last year. The pic is in pretty good shape - seems somewhat cleaned up for blu ray. However, its audio track won't match modern movies - there just isn't good source material. It was made in the early 80s after all before the era of full surround sound so I guess there is only so much they could have done. Similarly the extras are narrow. Still given the price its worth a look.

I enjoyed this movie. Fun to see Arnold at the beginning of his career. Movie runs kind of long, I found myself fast-forwarding to the good parts. The Special features are pretty good too. If you are a fan of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, you will probably enjoy this movie as well.

Conan the Barbarian will always be a movie I watch, no matter what else is on. It was a great venture into fantasy-adventure, and a remarkable vehicle for a poor actor at the time. Arnold would have never become such an attraction if this movie wasn't as good as he was bad ... a real Win-Win!

Great early 80's/earl Arnold movie. Stands up w/predator, terminator and t2 as one of his best epic action films. Unlike the terrible sequel and recent remake it stays fairly true to Robert Howards vision of Conan. Has aged remarkably well drfinatly worth a look for fans of the genre.

What can I say? This movie is HORRIBLE, but I love it anyway. It was nice to grab it on BluRay if only because it was pretty cheap, and it was a fun way to waste a day. The extras aren't anything special, but well, I don't think that's the reason anyone buys this anyway.

This is one of my favorite movies and I can not say enough about this blue ray version with updated audio! Picture quality makes it appear as if it was made recently and the movie itself is one of the best to come out of the 80s.
