Synopsis

Cutthroat Island
Geena Davis stars in this adventure saga as the most swashbuckling female pirate to ever lay waste to the seven seas. Morgan Adams (Davis) is the daughter of a pirate who has followed in her father's footsteps. When he dies, he passes along his ship, a crew of bandits, and one third of a treasure map (which happens to be tattooed on his skull). Morgan is eager to search out the rest of the map and retrieve the riches, but the fragment she holds is in Latin. Morgan then buys a well-educated slave, William Shaw (Matthew Modine), who can read the ancient language and already has a taste for the criminal life. However, Morgan and William are not long into their search when they discover that someone else is following the same trail for the rest of the treasure map: Dawg Brown (Frank Langella), Morgan's uncle and as black-hearted a scurvy dog as ever boarded a ship. As Morgan and Dawg battle each other over the fragments of the map, a British journalist (Maury Chaykin) covers their feud for the penny press. William Shaw was originally to have been played by Michael Douglas, who dropped out in the early stages of this troubled production. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

    Bad movie, bad quality

OK I knew going in this was a bad movie (my recollection was it was fun, but I don't know what kind of drugs I was on in the 80s or 90s when this came out but...) Worse is that the movie does not fill the screen! I think it was adapted for square TVs or something, but today's TVs are rectangular -- so it had a thick black border around it making the picture a LOT smaller than the TV screen. Save the $5, buy a coffee.

    Action Packed Pirate Fun!

It's an older movie, but it's pretty good for its age. It was the best Pirate movie I'd seen until Pirates of the Caribbean. But if you tried to make Pirates of the Caribbean in the same time period, it would have sucked. Cutthroat island is action packed, has a good treasure hunting story, and Geena Davis does her own stunts in this one.

I only watched this movie once and that was all I needed. Obviously this was a low budget film and Geena Davis wasn't at her best. Not a good movie. To whoever said this was the greatest pirate film ever...Try watching Pirates of the Carribean or Nate and Hayes...Sorry, but this movie just doesn't cut it.

Really one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I'm quite shocked it was even released on dvd. Widescreen and full-screen viewing options for those who want to bother.
