Based on Jeph Leob and Tim Sale's Batman: The Long Halloween, The Dark Knight picks up where Batman Begins (and the animated prequel Gotham Knight) left off. In this action packed film, Batman (the incredibly talented Christian Bale) must continue tracking down Scarecrow(Cillian Murphy) and other 'Arkham Inmates' from the first film. Then he must deal with a new insane killer/theif, known as The Joker(Heath Ledger) and a mob boss named Sal Maroni(Eric Roberts). At his aid is his faithful butler, Alfred (Michael Caine), ADA Dawes (Gyllenhaal), James Gordon (Oldman), and newcomer District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhardt), who is Gotham's 'White Knight'. Throughout the course of the film, Batman is pushed to his limits. The Joker tries to drive him insane or just corrupt by pushing him until he will go to far and kill someone, turning Batman from dark hero to wanted vigilante. While for the most part all of the characters are well written, and though the clown keeps the morbid humor, Joker strays to far away from the source material for my taste. Instead of green haired and skin bleach maniac, you have a madman who won't shut up about his scars and is heavily based off of the aforementioned graphic novel's serial killer, Holiday. Despite this minor turn, The Dark Knight is as great as it's predecessor and the 1989 Tim Burton classic, Batman. This is a movie to see if you love Batman, books, comic books, films or just even music, due to the movie's bold scores.
