This historical drama from director Joe Wright focuses on the trials of Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) soon after he becomes prime minister of the U.K. in 1940. With Nazi armies rolling through Europe, Churchill must figure out how to rally the nation to action while many of his contemporaries advocate peace talks with Hitler. Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James, Stephen Dillane, Ronald Pickup, and Ben Mendelsohn co-star.~Ellen Martinez
Have no real interest in Winston Churchill, have grown bored of Hollywood's WWII films, thought Gary Oldman was just a decent actor, and really fone with these pseudo documentary/biopics being churned out enough masse these days.
As Master Skywalker said in the newest Star Wars film The Last Jedi (available on sale now, with exclusive Steel books in store and on bestbuy.com, highly recommended also) "FUNNY HOW EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAID WAS WRONG"
Not 5 star, but definitely a 4 1/2 star. I am invigorated by the thought there are still great WWII motion pictures that can be made. I literally understood a new correlation to the events at, and immidiately bought another 4 star plus film named after, but the events at DUNKIRK (on sale now at bestbuy.com in 4k UHD definitely add that to your cart with Darkest Hour, and hey YOU JUST QUALIFIED FOR FREE SHIPPING, BONUS BONUS!! Thank me later, you can donate to my charity foundation).
But all I can say is just gamble on this title ya cheapskate, bestbuy has you covered with great everyday price match guarantees, but they are always best price on sales costs sround the net, THEN you can come back and click HELPFUL on this review after a screening.

Once again Gary Oldman gives a great performance as Winston Churchill. Detail on this disc is impeccable from start to finish. It's just gorgeous. It isn't rich with HDR bold colors but it is natural and warm at times and when the HDR does pop you will notice it. If your a fan of history this is a must watch. The Dolby Atmos is serviceable for this type of film. This is not an action flick but heavy on dialogue.
Incredible film and quite tense at times seeing The UK in a really scary time in History as the German war machine ravages it’s way through Europe. But Gary Oldman wow just how talented and incredible is he as Churchill!?
This film is one of the most riveting performances by Gary Oldman. He is beyond amazing as Winston Churchill. A period piece from the most terrifying days of WWII for the world and the British Isles. Air raids. German bombs destroying London and so many other places. The terror. What Churchill did during this time showed true leadership, something we could certainly use these days. This is one of my favorite films. I love Oldman but in this role, he becomes Winston. I was telling a friend just yesterday about the Darkest Hour. A must see!! You won't regret it.
Darkest Hour is a riveting biographical drama that details the first tense weeks of Winston Churchill's unexpected ascension to Prime Minister at the height of WWII. Featuring a superb, Oscar-winning performance by Gary Oldman as the bitter, cantankerous politician, the film is the perfect companion piece to Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk. Inspiration bleeds into 4K Ultra HD with a lovely HDR10 presentation that is faithful to the filmmakers' creative, heavily-stylized intentions. The same excellent Dolby Atmos soundtrack heard on the Blu-ray is also joined by an identical set of bonus features, making the overall package is recommended for hardened fans and history buffs.
WOW! Any history person should enjoy this movie! Gary Oldman said great things about the United States when he accepted his Academy Award, one of the few with favorable comments about our country - and those comments came from and Englishman!
The movie itself tells the actual story from documented events and speeches and diaries! One of the best movies I have ever seen!
