    Synopsis

    Deck the Halls
When the spirit of Christmas compels a small-town New Englander to decorate his home with enough lights to make it visible from space, much more is set to be decked than just the halls in this holiday comedy featuring Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick as two warring neighbors determined to outdo each other in creating the best lighting display on the planet. Christmas is without question the most wonderful time of the year for Cloverdale, MA optometrist Steve Finch (Broderick). Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Steve's wife, Kelly (Kristin Davis), and the pair's two children, Madison (Alia Shawkat) and Carter (Dylan Blue). Despite Steve's annual holiday zeal, the rest of the Carters have grown to resent the seemingly endless family rituals leading up the Winterfest carnival over which their terminally cheerful patriarch presides. Though it seems that nothing in the world could dampen the spirits of the local "King of Christmas," Steve soon finds his royal status challenged when used-car salesman Buddy Hall (Danny DeVito) moves in next door and covers his house with enough festive lights to make it visible from the deepest crater of the moon. His Yuletide thunder effectively stolen, Steve resorts to desperate measures in regaining his crown when Buddy's lavish decorations make him a local celebrity, his wife strikes up a warm friendship with the neighbor's outspoken better half, Tia (Kristin Chenoweth), and even the kids seem to warm to the car salesman's air-headed twin daughters, Ashley and Emily (Sabrina and Kelly Aldridge). ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

i'll start out by saying that everyone rates a movie according to their expectations. with most movies i've seen lately, i'm usually disappointed - probably because i'm expecting too much (how about a reasonable plot & a couple laughs/scares/cries-depending on movie type). my husband and i are huge movie-watchers and i especially love christmas movies. honestly, i hadn't seen a great christmas movie since the National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation...until we came across this movie! The guy that reviewed this before me must have been expecting an Oscar-winning story & performance. i love danny devito in this and matthew broderick isn't too bad either. it's a pretty funny christmas movie - just keep your expectations in check. come on people, it's not gonna be one of the greats like Miracle on 34th Street or It's A Wonderful Life.... p.s. to the previous reviewer, i'de love to know what movies you'de highly reccommend because i must've missed them!

This is a bit of an uneven holiday movie in my opinion. The basic premise of this movie is one obnoxious neighbor with an outrageous home holiday display of lights and music annoying his quiet conservative neighbor leading to conflict between them. The idea was fine and the casting was good as well (in theory), but the execution was imperfect. I don't know if it was the fault of the director or the actors themselves, but it just wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. That said, it wasn't so bad I wouldn't recommend it at all or watch it again, just wish it had turned out a little better than it did.

      Bad Christmas Movie

The only thing that the creators of this film accomplished, was making a poor Christmas movie. It seemed like they were banking on people going to see this movie just because it was a Christmas movie; it did work but it didn't work well enough for people to buy the movie. I'll give you a quick synopsis of the movie. One guy puts a lot of christmas lights on his house, his neighbor dosen't like it, the two began to compete with each other over everything, and their families become angy with them. There a just saved you about an hour and forty five minutes.

The picture quality is about average with decent color and detail. This is the story about two neighbors who don't get along. Each is trying to make a statement but neither does it very well. Only towards the end do you begin to understand what is driving each of them. The story seems choppy and the extremes just to extreme. Your money is probably spent else where!

I love Christmas and I love Christmas movies! I watched this one on Demand back at the holidays and while in Best Buy the other day i saw it in a bin by the register as I was waiting to check out. I though, hey, I don't have this one yet and for the price that couldn't be beat, it would make a perfect addition to my Christmas movie collection.

Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito make a pretty good comedy duo. Almost the Odd Couple so to speak. My family and I laughed at many hilarious moments through out the movie. The scene where DeVito and Broderick are snuggled up naked in a sleeping bag had me in tears! I rank this movie up there for X-mas comedy's.

It's one of those Christmas films that you don't need to see, but it doesn't hurt to include it with your annual holiday viewings. Rival neighbors compete to have the brightest lit house on the planet (literally). The house sequence from space is pretty funny!

Had never seen this movie but it was on sale so bought it. It was ok, but not any great storyline. Pretty predictable. Christmas movies are supposed to be cheesy though, right? Plenty of well known actors in the movie.
