Video Card Failure, Across Multiple Models

      Posted
      retrodog

I bought this laptop today, thinking it looked like a good deal in terms of features and capabilities. It's on the upper end of what I wanted but decided to pay the extra for the performance. Upon completion of the setup I found that there was no access in the regular video card configuration under Win 10 that would show the secondary video card. And the BIOS showed it as "unknown video card". So I assumed that I was not getting the benefit of that feature. I tried calling Dell and talked to two different support persons. But both had a very strong Indian accent and it was very difficult to understand about a third of what they were saying. And I'm a dialect translator at work. Yes, it was pretty severely bad if I had a difficult time with it. The first lady told me that the video card on the box label was incorrect and there was a different card in the computer. She told me I needed to take it back to Best Buy to let them take care of the issue. There was nobody at Dell who could/would help me figure out if it was user serviceable. I called back a second time and the second lady told me that the label on the box was correct and I would still have to take it back to Best Buy to get some help. At this point I was even more frustrated. I took it back to the store and to the Geek Squad table Josh helped me out and confirmed that the secondary card was not showing up in the properties window. He could get to it with the nVidia utility, so we could tell that it was there, but Windows wasn't seeing it or offering to utilize it at all. Josh finally told me it would probably be quicker to just exchange it for a different one to save me the effort of waiting on them to work on it. So I moved over to the customer service line and told the young lady there that I'd go get another one. I headed back to the area where they are on display and the guy who sold me the original one went looking for another. He could not find the one they had listed. So on a whim, I decided to wonder around and try other laptops with secondary video cards. None of the Dells reported the optional card at all. One HP did very nicely, but then the more expensive HP that was similar to mine would not. And it was $400 more expensive ($1600 vs. $1200). So maybe it needs a BIOS upgrade. Well maybe most of them need a BIOS upgrade. Not knowing if there was a known solution, not being able to get any help from Dell at all, and not feeling like wasting more of my life on chasing this unicorn, I just got a refund. Now I'm sitting here doing a little research to see if anybody else knows how to fix this. Well I'm also thinking back to the old days when Dell used to assemble and test every computer they sold, and took great pride in that, as well as their great customer service. I guesss they take little or no pride in these two things any longer. So sad.

        Hello retrodog,

Thanks for your review and we're sorry to hear how unhappy you were with your with your recent Dell 2-in-1 experience. In the future we would recommend updating the BIOS on your computer as well as checking all of the drivers and software to make sure that they are up to date. Dell offers a Support Assist app that helps new users set up their computer and ensure that everything is up to date. We're sorry to hear that you decided to return your computer but we hope that you will consider Dell again in the future.

      Slower than i3 and Overheats

I bought this for my son, wanting to give him the best laptop I could get for $1,400 as he goes off to college to pursue a degree in engineering. It started freezing up and shutting down the first time he tried to use it. He ended up spending 4 hours with a Dell tech. The freeze ups and shutdowns did not completely go away though they became less frequent and more manageable. Now his bigger concern is that it is slow, even slower than his 5-year old Lenovo i3, considering this Dell is i7 and has a Solid State Drive. I asked him if it could be the network speed or wifi at his dorm, but he says No, as he is connected via ethernet cable and his roommate's computer is performing fine. He says the only thing that's really fast is the boot up sequence. Otherwise, everything else -- disk file access, email, internet access -- is slow. We tried to return it but I didn't realize Best Buy's return period was only 15 days and we were 5 days over that period. I would have returned it earlier but my son took his time trying to deal with the problems and he didn't make me aware of them soon enough. If I had known, I would have kept bugging him and breathed down his neck as I would have done if he were still living at home. It was suggested by a Best Buy chat rep that we try trading it in. So we tried that but Best Buy would only give us a trade-in value of $140 for a computer that was not even 30 days old. Ridiculous. My next door neighbor advises me to buy at Costco next time as they have a 90-day return policy. I will definitely keep that in mind.

        DaveN,

We're very sorry to hear about the issues that your son has been having with his new Dell computer. We'd recommend running the Windows Performance Troubleshooter to see if it can help the computer run faster:

        1. Close all open windows.
        2. Press the Windows logo key + X key on the keyboard.
        3. Click Control Panel.
        4. Click System and Security.
        5. Under Security and Maintenance, select Troubleshoot common problems.
        6. Under System and Security, click Run maintenance tasks.
        7. Follow the on-screen instructions and prompts to complete the process.
        8. Restart the PC.

If you are still having issues with the computer overheating please follow these tips:

        Tips for Proper Usage:

        1. Dell does not recommend placing portable systems directly on your lap. Due to reductions in the thickness of modern portable systems, heat transfer can be an issue.
        2. Using a portable system (Laptop) on a hard, flat, non-cloth surface will increase airflow and reduce heat from underneath and inside the system.
Using the portable system on a blanket, pillow, or other types of cloth will cover up the fan cause the computer to overheat and can cause permanent damage.
        3. It is recommended to use the portable system in a Room temperature of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) with a Humidity level no greater than 90%.
        4. Use compressed air to clean the vents on a regular basis.
        5. Using a cooling pad can decrease heat and increase performance.
        6. If you want to know the temperature limitations for your system, go to the Dell Support Website, look up your system model then open the user guide under the manuals link.

We hope these tips help your son's computer perform better for him.

This 2 in 1 is a beast! I am a very picky engineer when it comes to my tools and tech. I picked up one of these units at my local branch, and couldn't wait to take it on the field. It has handled everything I have thrown at it flawlessly! absolutely no freezing with any of my software. The performance is incredible and the 15.6' 4K display is truly a work of art. I love the touchscreen feature for my audio engineering gigs, and the active Dell stylus that's included for the business side of things. The speed is there, an amazing 4K display to match it. The only reason i gave it a 4 is because of the speaker quality and touchpad quality. Though it works great, it feels too plastic like. other than that, the rest of the unit feels great and high end with its aluminum housing,

This is our second purchase of this model. Bought one for my older college student in December, and she liked it so much we got this one for her younger sibling as she is heading off to college this fall. Touch screen and stylus is great for doing digital art. Make sure to fully update Windows 10 once purchased, this one had a minor initial problem with the sound card driver that Windows updates fixed. Didn't see the issue on the first one we bought. I'm guessing Microsoft introduced the bug in one patch then fixed it in another, later patch.

I looked for nearly a year to find the laptop I wanted to spend my hard earned money on. I looked at several Toshiba, ASUS, Lenovo and Dell laptops. I was interested in the XPS line from Dell but when I saw this, it was a no-brainer. This 2-1 has everything I need for nearly a $1000 less than the XPS line. I would recommend this to anyone who wants good value but a fairly high end all around laptop!

I have been using this for about a month now and have found it to be both fast and reliable. I did upgrade to win 10 pro immediately. The unit boots fast and the SDD drive make quick work of saving and retrieving files as well as loading programs. I do not use the tablet mode much but it is nice to have it. Same goes for the pen. Overall it is a fine machine.

This laptop was a real shocker for me. The display is flawless at 4K and the speed is refreshing and very fast. Compared to other machines with similar specs...this is hands down the best. It looks very professional and yet you can game with the best of them. Its very quiet and handles Photoshop, Lightroom, and Illustrator with ease.

I had this laptop for less than 30 minutes and it crashed! Now this was enough to get me upset but what really topped the cake was the laptops inability to not burn me while using it. It got so hot in 30 minutes of use , before the crash, that I had to put it down. I looked back over and it crashed. DO NOT GET!!!!!!!!!
