      Good Value for Basic Laptop

      Posted

Before reading my review - understand I am not computer illiterate. I do complex computer setup and repairs such as operating system installations, screen replacements, component repair/replacements, etc. So my review is not from a novice perspective. Bottom line - this is s good laptop for basic computing such as MS Office products like Word and Excel and for Internet browsing. It is not the fasted computer and this not a high end computer so don't expect it to be high end and accept it for what it is and you'll be satisfied. I bought laptop as temporary "Stop Gap" computer when my Asus gaming computer crashed. Only paid $217" out the door and that is a hard price to beat. Installed my own licensed copy of Office 2016 pro. It took hours to install all Windows 10 updates to get the software current. That's expected so no big deal. Just be prepared to spend setup time before you really start using the machine full time. I'll install more RAM soon - it can go to 16GB memory so that is a plus. The computer is quiet, light weight and does not get hot so I can sit it on my lap while wearing shorts and not be uncomfortable. It is not the 1080 HD resolution and I understand it is comparable to 720 HD. But with this screen size, you will not see a great deal of difference and yes, it is not as crisp as one with higher resolution - but, for basic computing and the low price - you really cannot beat the deal on this machine so I would definitely recommend it - unless you require high end gaming for graphics and speed. In that case you probably aren't looking at this laptop anyway.

I can’t call it 5 stars because it’s bottom tier “performance-wise” for laptops today. Video editors, online gamers and the rest of you with hobbies that require high performance should look elsewhere- but you know that! Don’t buy this as a gaming PC and cry about it. I use this for office work. That means some very general web-browsing to search for information a few times per day, lots of spreadsheet work, text only documents, the occasional PowerPoint presentation, and using company software for client information input etc. I’m VERY happy with the product for this purpose. I probably wouldn’t recommend it for anything else. But I don’t think you can beat the bang-for-buck for a simple office work computer. For those who care: -company IT guy WILL complain about it because “well, 8GB of RAM would be better”, yea- thanks Jeff. -Windows 10 Pro runs very smoothly on it. -heavier than some other laptops -it’s pretty power cord dependent. If you adjust performance settings to make it comfortable to use (speed-wise) on battery, it drains quickly. Keep it plugged in and it’s fine. -invest in a mouse. The touchpad isn’t that great. It’s responsive when moving the cursor, but clicking works when it wants to, which is about 4/5 clicks. Great for the money.

SLOW and constantly crashes waste of money

      Posted

Don't be lured in by the low price and large screen size! This is a worthless computer. I'm not sure which ones all these people with positive reviews got, but I got a lemon then. From day one it didn't work well, so I deleted all the useless apps it came bloated with and unpinned everything off the start menu and barely had a file saved on it and it still ran terribly slow and crashed often so I called Dell Tech support and this is nothing against tech support centers being out of the country, but I could barely understand the person I was speaking with because of their accent and a terrible phone connection. After he had me run the diagnostic tests (Support Assistant) which I'd already done myself, he concluded the computer was running fine. That may be "fine" for Dell, but even the most reasonable person would find the speed and crashing problems of this computer unacceptable, so save your money as you'll just be wasting it on this one. Unfortunately I made the mistake and can't return it because I moved to an island where there is no Best Buy and shipping it back would cost probably as much as the computer is worth. Should have bought a HP and spent the extra money and gotten a computer I could trust and rely on.

I read all these reviews on this computer (most of them are from non-owners/non-verified purchasers) and found them to be a little cruel. This is a CHEAP notebook made for basic tasks. However, it is a great machine if you are willing to do a few upgrades. With a Solid-State hard drive and 12-16GB of memory added, it runs pretty good. The Bluetooth/WiFi work well, it is easy to type on, the display is good for this price, and it is fairly light. Plue, you get a DVD burner and a SD card reader as well. This is a lot of computer for the dollar, so spend the bucks with Geek Squad and have it upgraded and you have a very usable 'student notebook'. I upgraded mine to a 500GB Solid State hard drive and 12GB of memory and it runs great. Remember that this is an AMD dual-core processor (not a gamer by any means). Be sure to make a 'System Image' before you change the drives and you can reload it back to factory. Now I have a great 'travel laptop' to use and if I lose it, I am not out a ton of money. Dell did a good job on this one.

      Slow!!!

      Posted
      Yoli

I bought this laptop in anticipation to starting school again soon, being that my other Dell Inspiron is 9 years old and it's a miracle that it still somewhat works. However, this Dell Inspiron sucks! I've had it less than a week and it's extremely slow. Web pages load slowly, downloads take forever, switching between tabs on the browser is slow, opening any kind of folder or file is slow...it's like everything is on a delay, which is maddening being that the whole purpose of me buying a new laptop was because my old one is old and also incredibly slow...and just out of nowhere while watching a video on Facebook, the whole laptop just shut down for no reason and said that "Windows has trouble restarting" Like seriously, Dell?! It's a brand new laptop!!! I'm so glad that school hasn't started for me yet because had I been in the middle of doing an assignment during this sudden shutdown, I would've been quite upset. I've used this laptop maybe 3 times in less than 7 days; it's not worth the trouble. I'm angry, and I'm taking it back.

I purchased this laptop for the brand and the price. It was shipped to my home by Bestbuy and it was on time. I downloaded Windows 10 to the Windows 10 pretrial already installed on the Dell. I also installed Macafee that came with the computer for free. 20 days after I ordered the computer and opened it for the 3rd time the sign on screen did not load and it took 15 minutes then to load. I called Bestbuy explained the problem and they said it was defective and to bring it in for a swap. Well, then they said I had it for 20 days and I was not an elite customer I could not return it and I had to call Dell. I called Dell and spoke to a tech and they ran a system check and said there was a problem with the software nothing with hardware so there will be a fee for service. I spoke to the software person and was informed yes I will need to pay for the diagnostic and anything else they find wrong with the computer. I explained to him that I owned this laptop for less than a month and this was the 3rd time I used it. I asked to speak with the resolution center to file a complaint and I was told there was no such department and the supervisor would tell me the same. I would not recommend Dell to anyone and Bestbuy is just as horrible. My friend who is an IT fixed the issue and it was with the preinstalled Windows 10.

      Decent, but not awesome

      Posted
      Steve

Decent for the price, but there are some drawbacks. First, and this applies to any new Windows PC, the first day or so will be slow as molasses in Antarctica while it indexes the disk, downloads updates, and installs a bunch of junk from the Microsoft store. Just let it do it’s thing and it will be much better after. The hard drive in this laptop is abysmal. In fact, just budget on getting an SSD or you will spend more time listening to the drive than anything else. While you’ve got the laptop opened up, grab another stick of 4GB RAM. Which leads to another gripe; this thing is a royal PAIN to get to the drive and RAM. Unlike another major laptop maker, this one requires the optical drive, keyboard, and entire bottom cover to be removed. Lastly, download the Windows 10 fresh start software and let it remove all the manufacturers installed stuff. If you can do all this yourself, you’ll still end up with a decent laptop for school or general use for a decent price. If you can’t do it yourself, shop for another laptop with (at least) an SSD installed.

      Perfect once you reinstall Windows

      Posted
      luella

You have to do a fresh Windows re-install or else it will run unbearably slow. Just type "Windows Defender" in the search box and click on Windows Defender Security Center. Go to "Device Performance and Health" and click "Additional Info" under Fresh Start. It will uninstall all the unwanted apps and programs and give you a fresh copy of Windows 10. IT takes about an hour though but its worth it and makes a huge difference. And then also I uninstalled all the programs I didn't need. I also set the number of processors to 2. Type "System" in the search box and go to "System Configuration" go to "BooT Tab" and then "Advanced Options" CLick on box that says "No. of processors" and click on down arrow to change to 2. Now you have both working processors. Enjoy your faster laptop.
