Deranged/Motel Hell [DVD]

This inspired double-feature DVD from MGM presents a skillfully matched pair of films in a package guaranteed to please the budget-conscious horror fan. This disc presents Motel Hell and Deranged and nicely remastered, letterboxed transfers that are a big improvement on the dim, grainy versions of both films previously available on home video. Some fans might be disappointed that Deranged isn't the fully uncut edition that has previously circulated on video but the R-rated edition used here is the most complete edition of the film that is legally available. In terms of audio, Deranged suffers from a tinny mono mix that sometimes makes the dialogue difficult to hear but Motel Hell benefits from a nice Surround stereo mix that serves up the film's soundtrack with plenty of punch. Extras are limited to a trailer for each film: The Deranged trailer is amusingly hyperbolic in 1970s exploitation film fashion and the Motel Hell trailer eschews the film's humor angle in an attempt to sell it as a straight-ahead shocker. Despite the periodic sound flaws on Deranged, both films look nice on DVD and the generous pairing of the two makes it well worth the money for horror fans.

This low-budget psychological drama finds a pregnant woman slowly losing her mind after she is attacked by an intruder. Two scenes are "borrowed" from Dial M For Murder and Roman Polanski's Repulsion, but director Chuck Vincent manages to add his own touches of black humor to this routine feature. Nudity and violence make this a R rated film. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Motel Hell
People come from far and wide to sample Farmer Vincent's distinctively flavored dried, smoked sausages, but one might well ask why there are so few people staying at his nearby motel. This horror comedy provides the graphic answer. It seems that the good farmer only uses the highest quality, specially processed human meat in his treats. To prepare the meat, he first harvests healthy tourists from his hotel. Next, he plants them into the ground up to their necks and with a sharp knife carefully slices their vocal chords. He and his portly sister then feed the victims until the meat is tender and well marbled with fat. Afterward they are promptly slaughtered, minced with a few secret herbs, and stuffed into sausage casings, which are then carefully aged in the smokehouse. His operation is abruptly cut off when Vincent's normal brother, Bruce, learns about the secret ingredients. In the end, the brothers grab chain saws and have a hilarious, blood-soaked showdown. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
