    Synopsis

Produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, this epic sci-fi adventure finds The Doctor's dark past returning with a vengeance following a frightening discovery in a secret vault deep inside London's National Gallery. With a rift linking 2013 to 1562 suddenly opened, the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) realize the world has come under invasion by a long-forgotten, shape-shifting alien race known as the Zygons - who have somehow escaped stasis in an antique painting, and have produced an exact double of Queen Elizabeth I (Joanna Page). Meanwhile, another painting depicting Arcadia on the final day of the Time War reawakens the deep shame carried by the current incarnations of the Doctor at the actions of their previous incarnation the War Doctor (John Hurt), whose detonation of a powerful weapon of mass destruction known as The Moment destroyed both the Time Lords and the Daleks. As Rose Tyler (Billy Piper) returns in her "Bad Wolf" persona to show the War Doctor the consequences of his actions, loyal companion Clara (Jenna Coleman) aids the three Doctors in stopping the Zygons, and making a difficult decision that will forever alter the course of Time Lord history. ~ Jason Buchanan

For the 50th Anniversary Special episode of Doctor Who, fans finally get to see a story we’ve only previously heard hints about. 11th Doctor Matt Smith is joined by fan favorite 10th Doctor David Tenant and John Hurt as the War Doctor in an adventure chronicling the darkest story in the Doctor’s past, his committing the genocide of both the ever-homocidal Daleks and his own people The Time Lords in order to spare the universe from all the death and destruction being caused by their ongoing conflict. By the time the 9th Doctor showed up in the modern Doctor Who series in 2005, he carried the weight of that awful event with him. Now, many years later the Doctor is pulled back in time to help his former selves and forced to relive the worst event of his many lives to see if he can fix his past mistakes. This story has not only Daleks as a villain, but also the long overdue reappearance of his old enemies, the shape-shifting Zygons. The Blu-ray transfer looks great and extra supplements include 2 mini-prequel shorts, a making of segment and Doctor Who Explained – a 50 minute special on all 50 years of Doctor Who. This set includes both the 3D and 2D versions of the special on the same Blu-ray disc and also a dvd copy of the episode.

Best Buy missed the boat on this one. They didn't promote it and had very few on the shelves. Got there late after work and found one left stashed behind some other movies or I wouldn't have gotten one. I'm rather disappointed with Best buy on this one. I'm not a full blown Dr. Who fan but I like the show. Couple things attracted me to it. Tom Baker! Yes Tom Baker is in it for a few minutes. Awesome! The 3D was really good considering this is what you'd think of as a "TV show". A cute perk was a set of Dr. Who cards inside that have all 11 Doctors plus the "old Doctor". So from a "not a super fan" of Doctor Who, I thought the story was very good, the 3D was excellent, and the special feature and cards were well done. I'm sure if you a fan you'll love it. If your a big 3D fan, like I am, this is a good one to get! Nice one to get if you would like to learn about the Doctor. The bonus features give a nice Doctor Who history from back in the day to present.

I do not get BBC America, so the only way I can keep up with recent Dr. Who episodes is when the DVDs come out. I had given up on possibly seeing this 50th Anniversary show with David Tenant (who is my favorite of the current series). I am very pleased that your store offers these Dr. Who DVDs for sale; I will continue to look for not only current episodes but also for available episodes of the older series as well. The interaction between the 2 doctors is interesting with each of them trying to outdo the other while the older Dr. is trying to help them understand what they can do rather than commit genocide. It was sad seeing what his previous decision had done to him and the 2 younger versions of himself finally understanding themselves better as they confronted how they had been affected by what he had done. This companion seemed to be the "glue" that bound them all together and helped them to accomplish what needed to be done. I also liked the special features which were available on this DVD.

Phenomenal Blu-ray fascinating to see how Matt Smith and David Tennant interacted. Both fine actors, they are also very different. Tennant is edgy and mercurial, likely to turn on a pin. Smith is gentler, with a boyish eccentricity and other-worldly strangeness. They sparred terrifically with a fair amount of trademark humour. Smith’s Doctor teased Tennant’s about his “sand shoes” and his weight. “Ooh. That is proper skinny. Hello matchstick man!” And yet they were both skilled enough to convince the viewer that they were one and the same person, both sharing a compassion, an acute intelligence and a formidable nose for danger.

As far as the 3D+ Bluray+DVD combo pack was a good price when I picked it up ($10) around the holiday season. The movie is a good adventure of The Doctor(s). It's a nice way of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the "Doctor Who" franchise. The package contains: Slip cover The 1st disc is a 3D bluray & bluray combo. The 2nd disc is the dvd. There is nothing else inside, no 50th Anniversary trading cards like previously released. no inside slip, & no digital code for movie. My bluray case was broken when I received it. I hadn't noticed because of the slip cover and until I took off the plastic. Don't know if I can return this Bluray, but the weird thing is the broken pieces of the bluray case are no where to be found . I'm not sure if this was repackaged and put back on the shelf? I checked both discs and they work fine. The bluray case won't close though without the slip cover.

The 50th anniversary Doctor Who episode had SO much to live up to and accomplishes the impossible. To top what the story had to live up to, they shot it in 3D, which lives up to the moment. Well worth watching from a story perspective. From a technical perspective, the 3D surpasses all expectations for a TV show. The 3D is not just a gimmick but is an INTEGRAL part of the story, which almost never happens. The one critique is that this needed to be loaded up with extras: commentaries, trailers, deleted scenes. But you get only one deleted scene and the main trailer. No commentaries and I would like to have seen the prelude shown exclusively in theaters as an easter egg. But still well worth the price.

      ULTIMATE Anniversary Episode!

Doctor Who celebrated it's 50th Anniversary on November 23, 1963 (if you include the time period that the show was on hiatus in the 90s#, and the episode could not have been much better. It would have been nice for more past 'Doctors' and other characters to be involved; however, there is a nice mix of references to the older version of the show while also continuing the current storyline of the new version of the show. Of course, I want to avoid "spoilers" #as River Song might say# but be sure to watch the final moments of the episode for a nice send-off to the first 50 years. Here's to 50 more!!!

      Only problem is blu-ray extras

Great episode, one of the best of the current series. David Tennant and Matt Smith play excellently off each other and John Hurt is a good straight man for them (although Paul McGann could have been too). My only problem is that the blu-ray extras, while good, are lacking. They could have and should have included the docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time, and all its regular DVD features, and the short feature the Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. If those had been included, I would have given the blu-ray five stars out of five.
