Amazing "Builder" Game with Tons of Nostalgia

The instant I saw the trailer for this game I knew it would be a day one purchase for me. It melds the simplistic block style building of minecraft with the charming dragon quest atmosphere. Building structures is incredibly simple, and the blueprint system makes it even better. I love that there's an actual story that goes along with all the building, and in addition, there's still a "creative" mode where you get free reign to build whatever you desire, however you desire. Graphics are very chamring; colors are vibrant, gameplay is very smooth with no hitches and controls are very tight and responsive. Without giving too much of the story away, it's a "what if" scenario, where the hero of the very first dragon quest game (dragon warrior in the united states at the time; remember the nintendo power promo where you subscribe and get the first game for free?) chooses the "bad" ending of the game. It's incredibly charming and fun, and very easy to pick up and play. Recommended for youngsters and dragon quest fans alike.

Reminiscent of Minecraft, but with actual quests. The general gist of the game is that you're transported to an area and have to start building it back to its former greatness. This involves building specific things that villagers want, fighting off monsters, rescuing other important villagers, etc. The areas get progressively more dangerous -- stronger monsters, lava, poison swamps, etc. Once you're finished with one area, you can be whisked away to the next. In each area, the requirements for buildings are often different enough that your old knowledge isn't relevant. This is probably the most frustrating part of the game, in my opinion. The game also includes a mode called Terra Incognita where you can freely build whatever you want and make use of all recipes you found in the main game, The Dragon Quest motif gives a lot of nostalgia to the game for some players too. You'll recognize all of the music by Koichi Sugiyama, you'll recognize the familiar Akira Toriyama style. The game also actually takes place in the same land as the original game back on the NES. Overall a fun title if you're into similar games.

Dragon Quest is one of the oldest and most venerable franchises in the world. While that is a definite feather in it's cap, it also comes with some baggage in the form of occasionally overused traditions of gameplay and storytelling. Here we see Square Enix trying something new, creating a mashup of DQ lore and monsters with sandbox gameplay reminiscent of Minecraft and other games in that vein. It's a fun throwback to the original DQ, with an early reference to that game's 'choice' of endings. I haven't finished it yet, but I can say that it's a fairly well balanced mix of it's disparate parts and that it's a definite pleasure to see Square Enix continue to mix up classic franchises in new ways. If you like DQ or Minecraft, I would definitely recommend this game, however if you have problems with either, you might want to try the demo first. Happy gaming!

This game really surprised the h*** out of me. After reading mixed reviews, especially from game critics I decided to try it. I have played some of the Dragon quest games and I am a huge minecraft fan so it seemed right. This game had me locked in. It even managed to draw my wife in to the point we were taking turns playing it. Very fun and addicting. Storyline is good. Combat is fun. It can get a little repetitive when farming materials but that's how builder games work. The only thing I dislike about the game is after each chapter you have to restart your city. The first city is kind of a learner city with a ton of schematics but tell second city gives you more freedom. Great game. I will buy the sequel when they make it.

I got this game expecting a minecraft game with a Dragon Quest skin. It is a minecraft game with a Dragon Quest skin but done in what feels like the best possible way with a fun story. The controls are great and the visuals are cute. The best thing about the game is it has all the pleasing building and destroying of minecraft while having a story to give you a point. You try to rebuild and restore the land defeating bosses as you go. The final boss is particularly fun because you can bring anything you've built to the fight. The replay value is also quite good because it has challenges to complete for each chapter that unlock goodies for multiplayer. I can't wait til the sequel.

With returning music scores from earlier games and character designs from Akira Toriyama, the game not only gives you lots of nostalgia, it’s very colorful and feels just so right to be a Dragon Quest game. While they are undeniably similar on a surface level, it does Dragon Quest Builders a disservice to compare it to games like Minecraft – it has more in common with its RPG predecessors than anything else. Like any role-playing game, you can go through the story in mere days and be done but because the game offers so much to do, why not take a seat back and have fun building! - See more at: http://playstationwire.com/2017/01/08/review-dragon-quest-builders/

Well, this was advertised as a mix of minecraft and an rpg. It does have SOME rpg elements, but honestly not many outside of what you get in minecraft (mining ores to make better items etc). There is no leveling system for your character, just a leveling system for your town. The battle system is similar to minecraft as well, just with a few special attacks thrown in. No magic system etc though. It's a good game to waste some time on, but it is not as addictive as minecraft was even close. I also don't see any replay value here. One thing it does do is make you miss some of the old dragonquest games lol, but I'm not sure if that is really a selling point.

Dragon Quest Builders is a charming game with plenty of content to enjoy. There is certainly a place to build whatever you want, but for people who like to explore different areas and discover secrets all while having a directed path to travel through the game, this game offers that. You start as the only person who can build things, but as you attract new characters to your town, you will begin inspiring them in various ways and that rewards you with new recipes and blueprints to craft various structures and items. All in all, it's a great little game.
