A feared urban cop takes on a vicious city drug dealer in a futuristic metropolis as director Pete Travis (Vantage Point) and screenwriter Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine) team to bring iconic 2000A.D. lawman Judge Dredd to the big screen. In the future, much of North America has been poisoned by radiation. The sprawling urban jungle Mega City One stretches from Boston to Washington D.C., and in order to keep the growing criminal element in check, police enforcers called "Judges" have been given the power of judge, jury, and executioner. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of them all, delivering death sentences with impunity as he fights to rid the streets of "Slo-Mo" -- a powerful new drug that alters its user's perception of time. In the process of training psychic rookie Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), Dredd receives a report of an incident in a sprawling criminal stronghold ruled by fearsome drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), and ventures in to investigate. Upon learning that one of her top men has been captured by Dredd shortly thereafter, an enraged Ma-Ma seizes control of her massive 200-story complex, launching an all-out war against the Judges as Dredd and Cassandra find themselves trapped in the belly of the beast.~Jason Buchanan
"Mega-City Masters: 35 Years of Judge Dredd" featurette
"Day of Chaos: The Visual Effects of Dredd 3D" featurette
Though a lot more violent than the 1995 Sylvester Stallone 'Judge Dredd', i still enjoyed this more modern take of the beloved Dredd character. Carl Urban as Dredd is a satisfying performance and hope he's in another Dredd movie if they make another.
The visual effects have really come a long way since the 1995 counterpart and still hold up in 2021.
The villainess [Lena Headey] makes for an interesting character. Her backstory is explained in a featurette in the bonus features, which i highly recommend watching first before the movie, to better understand her character.
This is an awesome 2-disc steelbook package with plenty of bonus features to enjoy!
Overall, an awesome movie and purchase!
Pretty solid movie. This was my first time seeing it, and I enjoyed it. The PQ was a tad bit softer than i wanted but still looked great in 4K. The real star of the show is this SteelBook. Absolutely fantastic! Looks fantastic in person.
I was checking the Internet to see the top movies in 3D and Dredd was on that list actually was top 5 in some reviews. The 3D effects are very good crisp and clean. The price was the best you can get this movie for at less $9.00. A bang for your buck. I really recommend this movie...enjoy
3D/2D bluray ed. won't play on 3 different players
Bought first one release week and it wouldn't play on Samsung BD-E5900 (3D player#, Visio VBR133 #3D player#, or LG bluray drive on PC #2D only, DVD-burner). All with the latest firmware of of 01/22/2013.
- Samsung player error: "Cannot play the disc. The disc does not meet the specifications."
- Visio player error: Loading and then tray just opens
- LG bluray drive on PC: Tray opens: Please insert disc
Exchanged for another copy 2 weeks after initial purchase - same issue/errors. I've read similar accounts from people who have purchased at other retailers so I'm not sure if it's a bad batch, incompatabilities with the 2D/3D combo disc format, or what. May try again, or just go for credit if possible on open media/product...
This review is just for this release not the film itself (which is seriously underrated and one of the best action movies of the 2010s).
What’s to say? The Steelbook is fantastic. What surprised me though is that it isn’t mentioned, but the original Blu-ray Disc that is included is also the 3D version of the film! So in this one package you get Dredd in 4K/HDR, Blu-ray, 3D, and digital. Literally every format available. If you don’t have this yet, get it.
Dredd, based on the comic book series published by 2000 AD, is a stellar comic book adaptation that stands out from the standard fare.
Karl Urban stars as the titular Judge Dredd, an arbiter of justice in the apocalyptic world of Mega City One. Dredd takes place over the course of a single day, in which the judge is paired with greenhorn Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a recruit with a unique psychic ability. They find themselves locked within the confines of a skyscraper controlled by Ma-Ma, a ruthless crime boss played by Lena Headey. The rest of the movie plays out as Dredd and Anderson have to fight for their survival in Ma-Ma's territory, contending with both gangsters and corrupt Judges. The movie wastes no time in throwing the viewer headlong into this dangerous and gritty world, carried by Karl Urban's impressive performance and a riveting electronic soundtrack.
The steelbook edition features great art and is recommended to long-time fans of the movie and newcomers as well.
