    Not a typical duet album

Most duet albums pair an older, established musician (ie. Tony Bennett) with a very popular current hitmaker (ie. Lady Gaga) to take on a bunch of songs everybody already knows (ie. "Cheek to Cheek"). Usually, it's more a novelty than two artists collaborating on making music. Van Morrison is one of the greatest singer/songwriters of our times, and has had many big hits (ie. "Brown Eyed Girl," "Moondance," etc.), but he eschews his most familiar songs for a deeper dig into a catalogue that spans some 50 years. Also, he chooses duet partners who aren't superstar popular or well-known to contemporary audiences. Gospel legend Mavis Staples, jazz great George Benson, Dire Straits' guitarist/singer Mark Knopfler, former Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall make appearances here, along with Georgie Fame, a huge figure in British music but hardly known here in America. While there isn't much radical re-working or re-imagining the old songs, the performances are all good and show a affinity for the material.

As duet albums go, you'd be hard pressed to find one as spirited as this .... Van is in his usual fine form, with a little help from his friends. The strength of this album is in large part driven by the song selection from Van's vast catalogue; not radio friendly hit singles, but lesser known gems performed in spirited fashion. Standouts are the album opener "Some Peace of Mind" with Bobby Womack; "Fire in the Belly" with Steve Winwood; and "Irish Heartbeat" with Mark Knopfler. Van seems to be enjoying restyling a fine collection of songs with some talented artists. A fine addition to an extraordinary catalogue!

Here's a surprise: it took the long-exhausted "Duets" concept for Van Morrison to create his best album since his underrated 2005 work "Magic Time." The closest Van the Man comes to covering one of his best-known songs is his duet with Michael Buble of "Real Real Gone;" but for all intensive purposes, this is a loving resurrection of some of the finest songwriting in his catalog. If "Wild Honey," Van Morrison's duet with Joss Stone, doesn't captivate you, no song of his likely will.

Though this feels like Van fulfilling a contract requirement for an album, he didn't just pack it in and crank out some fluff. He really did rework many of these songs and turn them on their head. He also took a lot of forgotten songs off not very popular albums and choose those as the titles in lieu of the greatest hits. I particularly like the Bobby Womack, Mavis Staples, PJ Proby, Steve WInwood and Taj Mahal tracks though the remainder are strong too.

Van Morrison is one of only a few artists I buy everything put out. So my review might be biased, So here goes,; I'm not going to listen to this too much, except when he sings with Shana, his daughter, it is not to special. Covers of his earlier songs, I'd rather hear them instead. This album hasn't captured me yet, and it will be hard to compared to so many before it.

Originally I was not intending to purchase this, but I gave it a sampling and was dragged in. I would say that he has his guests stick fairly closely to the original interpretations on these tracks. However, I feel that the general groove of the album is one of joy and friendship, and they seem to have had a good time recording these tunes. It's staying in my library.

Always look forward to any and all Van Morrison releases. This duets package is a goodie and does not disappoint. Interesting selection of Van songs that are teamed up with various singers but the selection with the late great Bobby Womack does stand out. Solid release and one where Van sounds like he's having fun!

If you like Van Morrison, you'll like this. I ordered this on-line because of the new release dates on music. They announce it on sunday, it arrives the next friday, and the sale is over on the following sunday. Not much of a window of opportunity to get to the BB Store...
