EdTV [Collector's Edition] [DVD] [1999]

Ron Howard's reality-TV satire EDtv gets a deluxe release with this DVD package. The widescreen transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. An English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a French soundtrack is mixed in Dolby Digital Surround. There are no subtitles, but the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental features include two different commentary tracks -- one by the director and another by the writers, talent bios, production notes, the theatrical trailer, deleted scenes, outtakes, and a "making of" documentary. Although the film failed to click with audiences (it was overshadowed by the seemingly similar The Truman Show), this disc makes every attempt to reach an audience.

Synopsis

EDtv
The turning point in the life of Ed Pekurny (Matthew McConaughey) comes thanks to the misfortunes of the NorthWest Broadcasting Company. After two years on the air, their flagship cable channel, True TV, has slid into obscurity due to competition from the The Gardening Channel. Program director Cynthia Topping (Ellen DeGeneres) brainstorms a last ditch effort to save the channel: broadcast one ordinary person's life 24 hours a day, unedited (while he sleeps, the day's highlights will be shown). When the network agrees to the idea, Topping must find the subject of her program. After endless auditions, she lucks upon Ed, a goofy but good-looking video store clerk. Ed has little time to get used to his new shadow, a three man video crew, before the show becomes a hit. Suddenly Ed's a cultural icon with fan clubs, stalkers, and imitators, but the media saturation has it's effects on his friends and family, who are now part of the program. Ed alienates his proud brother, Ray (Woody Harrelson), by falling in love with his girlfriend, Shari (Jenna Elfman). His estranged father Hank (Dennis Hopper) reappears after abandoning the family and creates tension between Ed and Ray's mother, Jeanette (Sally Kirkland) and her wheelchair-bound second husband, Al (Martin Landau). When Ed realizes the phenomenon has turned on him, he convinces Topping to stop the ordeal, but not her boss, Whitaker (Rob Reiner). To regain his life, Ed must find a way to cancel EDtv. ~ Ron Wells, Rovi

Everybody compares this to The Truman Show which came out about the same time. They are completely different. The Truman Show is a serious movie about somebody who is unaware he has been on a reality TV show since birth. This is a comedy about an adult who is well aware that he is on reality TV. Both movies are great in their own genre. As a comedy, this is extremely funny and did not deserve the negativity it received upon release for being inferior to The Truman Show. Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges.

Most have never seen EDtv but it was back when Ron Howard and Matthew Mcconaughey were making some of their better movies. This movie foreshadowed the reality TV craze on television and is both funny and heartwarming. Really worth checking out and now out on blu-ray. Worth a look.

Very underrated movie living in the shadow of The Truman Show. In some ways I think this is a superior version and a harbinger of today's reality TV programming (except with the sliminess). Very good performances from all the main actors.

So Matthew McConaughey is gorgeous, so it made the movie bearable. It was mildy funny. Ellen Degeneres played a good role; she was probably the most funny element of the whole movie. A few cameos from Jay Leno, and Elizabeth Hurley were funny too. Not an outstanding movie, but something worth seeing.

Underrated film finally makes it's long overdue Blu-ray debut. Glad I pre-ordered it because I've heard it's very hard to find in store. Best Buy exclusive until October.

Great movie and great price, but very mediocre picture quality. Probably used the same master from the DVD however many years ago.

Harrelson, Hurley, Elfman and McConaughey were great in their roles and kept me intrigued. Another Ron Howard directed gem.
