I thoroughly enjoyed Dylan's first album of standards ("Shadows in the Night" from 2015). I thought I would enjoy this one as well. I was not wrong. The appeal of the first one, for me, was the fact that he chose lesser known tunes from the "Great American Songbook." On "Fallen Angels" he sings ones that are more well known like "It Had to Be You" and "Young at Heart." On some level, that makes it a little less enjoyable because I already know the tune. However, I do find myself more likely to sing along. I also feel that at his age, he can do whatever he wants. I'll still likely buy it, and I'll likely enjoy it. And I did.

For the casual Bob Dylan fan, this is not a good starting point. However, if you've been on-board for most of Mr. Zimmerman's 50 plus year run, and enjoyed his last CD (Shadows In The Night), you will not be disappointed. Once again, Dylan returns to the classic American songbook, transforming well-covered numbers into revelations. Mining the depths of the lyrics, Dylan's plaintive moan is guided along by subtle blues based arrangements provided by his solid touring band. Another late career gem from an american icon.

The chameleon known as Bob Dylan continues his travel down the highway of our/his youth with the venture into the Great American Songbook. No pop hits here-only classic takes on classic standards. His 37th studio album includes the works of Sammy Cahn, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen and more. More importantly, every song except for Skylark, was once recorded by the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra. Recommended if you are a fan, but prepared to be scared away if you're looking for the protest singer of the Sixties.

Take one of our best songwriters, who also possesses one of its least mellifluous voices, and have him add his vocals over the top of fairly standard arrangements of well-worn standards. It's a risky idea (and the second release in a row for which he's done it) that somehow doesn't feel dangerous at all in execution. Not as bad as it could have been, but not really as interesting as it could have been either.

Bob's second album of standards is a great accompaniment to his first release from early 2015. Play this over a nice cup of coffee while watching a sunrise or enjoy it with a glass of wine as the sun sets. He and his band sound fantastic and Bob adds a road weary voice with decades of life experiences to many of these familiar standards. A great buy!

This second 'standards' album by Bob Dylan is definitely not essential to anyone by the hardest core Dylan fan. The band's work is nice, but Dylan's singing doesn't do anything for these songs that hasn't already been done much better by many singers. I might consider buying or downloading an album for the backing tracks, but that's it.

"Shadows In The Night" caught me completely by surprise...I really enjoyed it and here we have basically the next volume in Der Bob's take on the great American Songbook...Again I really enjoyed it, the vocals are very sincere and the musicianship displayed is mighty fine...Or maybe I'm just getting old and mellow!
