Fangoria Blood Drive [DVD]

Fangoria, America's leading horror magazine, presents its first independently produced DVD featuring the winners from the Blood Drive short film competition. Unfortunately, indie horror flicks aren't really known for their inventiveness or execution and the seven shorts included here are no exception. Each winner seems derived from something else that's been ripped off a thousand times before, whether it be never-ending nods to Evil Dead or even imagery from Bob Clark's Black Christmas. Plenty of colored lighting can be found all over the place, with emphasis on red gels, and -- no surprise here -- the shorts are heavy on the quick cutting in the editing room. A few shorts show some promise, with Joel Robertson's eerie Shadows of the Dead being the main one, though, for the most part, these tend to show why there hasn't been a new young Wes Craven, John Carpenter, or the like in quite some time. Thankfully, someone had the bright idea of throwing on over an hour of supplements that have nothing to do with short films, indie horror, or even the magazine itself! Sure, it'd be nice to have something that shows a little behind-the-scenes over at the magazine, but hopefully they are saving that for future releases. Instead, the viewer is given two interviews with highly regarded friends of the genre, FX guru Stan Winston and horror scribe Clive Barker. The 30-minute interview with Winston is a fantastic look at one of the modern geniuses of the makeup/practical effects field. The talk ranges from his first job on 1972's Gargoyles all the way through Terminator 3 and beyond, focusing on what steps brought him to the next project and how his career has grown. Be sure and keep an eye out for an Easter egg that features an additional 12-minute segment featuring a tour of his studio and more interview segments. The 12-minute "Clive Barker's Abarat: The Artist's Passion" featurette finds the author in his studio preparing a collection of paintings for his book Abarat. Row after row of canvasses line his hallways and various rooms as the master of horror walks the viewer through his artistic inspiration behind many of his fantastical pieces of art. If those weren't enough extras, each and every menu features footage of none other than rocker/director Rob Zombie as he navigates you throughout the disc. Though Fangoria was smart to add in those worthy extras, this release doesn't really add anything good to their track record, already spoiled by years of poor "Fangoria Presents" series of releases (with Andrew Parkinson's admirable I, Zombie graciously excluded!).
